I'm from Cardiff and girlfriend is from Glasgow, we moved to W.A in 2022. We travelled to QLD, Sydney and Melbourne and fell in love with Melbourne.
We just made the move in October to Melbourne's West.
It will take some getting used to, but you will adjust quickly.
You will miss home from time to time, but you'll realise how good Australia is once you go back home for holiday, my god i LOVE this country, Welcome "home".

Hats, guys. You can thank me in 20 years when you dont get skin cancers. In the meantime that will stop you getting heat exhaustion and 3rd degree sunburn.
Its harder to sleep well when its warm. Try running your air conditioning in the bedroom at night.
Youve probably already sorted this, but for your internet in an apartment you should have a weird little metal box on a wall. Thats your nbn box. Talk to an internet provider and get your internet plan. They’ll send a modem to you. Plug that into the nbn box and youre good to go. Just log onto your modem wi-fi. If your apartment was built to take internet cables to each room (handy for the tv and pvp gaming) just use the splitter on your modem to route the cables into the wall sockets and plug your tv ethernet/or ps5 into the room lan plug.
If you dont have an nbn box the internet provider will arrange for NBN to instal one but you need to get your landlord to approve that because its a fixture. But most places these days already have an NBN box. Mind the lid, because its fiddly to open and close.
Ps is your vehicle a short wheel base? If so, be VERY careful on dirt roads and tracks. The high centre of gravity on them makes them more likely to flip. In case youre unaware, most of our road fatalities are on country roads. Soft shoulders, speed, inappropriate vehicles and vehicle handling account for most of that. I believe the soft shoulders is a big surprise to foreigners. Because of the heavy rains we get when its wet, bitumen shoulders can deteriorate badly, leaving the bitumen pretty chunky. Hit that at speed when youre not expecting it and it can pull the wheel right out of your hands.

Again, welcome and I hope your new life lives up to your expectations.

Welcome to Perth. Watching you guys leave the UK actually made me cry.....it brought back so many memories. The feelings you described as "excited" to be on your way but anxious and sad to be leaving family and friends. Its an absolute whirlwind of emotions. We moved to Perth 20 years ago with our 6 year old son. No regrets at all we love it here (live in the hills, not really beach people). But..... I still have an emotional hole and some days (usually birthdays and Christmas)miss my family and friends a great deal.
We have amazing friends here now 😊
Top tip.... don't underestimate the power of the sun. Polarised sunglasses, hats and sunscreen all year round.

@@sarahbolsontravelnot quite, more like putting a fan on to disperse the BBQ heat. Before global warming the Fremantle doctor was consistent, sun comes up heats the land warmer than the ocean, wind kicks in to equalise as best it can, night comes wind eases, 6 in the morning an easterly wind blows in the opposite direction because the ocean is warmer than the land. Rinse and repeat until 15 years ago. Global warming is equalising the temperature of the land and sea, which does not provide the big temperature differences that caused the freo doctor, to consistently blast 25 knots if wind daily during summer. Still the best place to sail boats or windsurf in the world

And knowing that your life is at the mercy of God, and in those moments you are pretty much helpless is not something I would wish on anyone. You were right to turn back. Welcome to Australia where bushfires are something you do need to make sure you are educated about to ensure you stay safe. Also please make sure that you have plenty of fluids in the car including fuel if you are travelling a long distance - far too many European travellers get caught because they simply don't understand how harsh the land and climate can be

  • @overworlder
    @overworlder Месяц назад +2

Dry heat is less muggy and oppressive than humid heat but the opposite pertains - dry cold feels colder. Europeans here comment on it. Especially combined with wind. A German friend said she’d never been colder than in Australia and when I visited her family in winter in Germany I could see why. It was cold in Germany, but also still and wet/snowy/foggy with a very low cloud deck, lower than the church steeples. And it would stay like that for months.
Nothing like Australia's high skies, biting winter winds and mercurial weather.

    Sorry about Wednesday… 37 degrees… stay cool.
Fortunately, we don’t have daylight saving so it’s not dark getting out early in the morning. Perth actually has about 20 minutes of permanent DS because our time line is 120 degrees which is 500 kms east of the city.

Hi again. I'll give you both a solid tip and echo other comments about sunscreen/sunburn and being sun smart.
First, the tip. Buy light coloured clothing because dark colours attract flies. Buy a cotton blend for comfort in our heat, cotton doesn't absorb much moisture so it dry's easily and doesn't get heavy.
A bonus tip, just about everything these days runs off lithium battery's. Our Aussie heat is not a lithium battery's best friend lol, especially the heat inside a parked car's cabin. I made a video some years ago, reviewing a gimbal and mentioned this (I will leave a link at the end of this comment) but basically getting a cooly aka chilly bag (insulated grocery bag) from the supermarket for about $2 will help protect your camera batteries, drone batteries etc. Don't even leave your smartphones inside a parked car. Lithium batteries have been known to swell in the heat which can cause damage to the device they're stored in. I personally can attest to the after a dash cam failed for this reason, now I only own a dashcam that's powered by a capacitor. I also use a small insulated bag that I can bring with me, I got it from a chemist's (pharmacy), it's actually meant for diabetics to carry their insulin pens but is perfect size for my action camera. It fits in a handbag, backpack, camera bag etc.

oooh, harsh time of the year to move to Perth. Been here since 2006 and this is maybe one of the hottest decembers I can remember. Usually ramps up from here to february. The Perth-Dubai-UK route is my favoured one and I try to sleep through one of those flights to get the timezones sorted, but yes it can take a while to get sorted. I guess depends which flight and when you landed...I'm thinking you landed middle of the night? You must get yourself a good hat/baseball cap and definitely so good SPF sunscreen - I usually get the factor 50. Also if you need glasses get some tinted ones of some clip on shades for them as that sunlight will cause headaches if you are not used to it

Perth, it's the best city in the world. The Mediterranean of Australia. Actually, I'm moving there permanently on the weekend from Brisbane. I've lived there, on and off, for the past 10 years, my home away from home. And, as of next week, my actual home.

Whack a rooftop tent on the Jimny, a bit of camping gear in the back and you will have awesome experiences

Welcome to Perth. I was born here but moved to the UK with my British husband in 1991 and moved back to Perth in 2019 with him and our daughter. Even for someone born and bred here, moving back was an admin nightmare so I feel lots of sympathy for what you’re going through.
Fish and chips at Cott Mainas the sun sets is definitely a Perth only experience.
I’m wondering if you’ve got anyone to spend Christmas with? Would you like to join a Perth family and experience a hybrid Christmas?

There's nothing like seeing people from the UK in our sun. Just remember the sun screen (cream). 50+ for that head mate. And a broad brim hat. An Akubra would be nice.

You get heaps of Jacaranda trees in WA as well, that's cool.

They do, but they’ve just missed the major flowering periods.

Welcome to Perth. I'd suggest googling "Slip, slop slap" it's a catchphrase from long ago that still rings true.

Welcome to Perth. Good that you have a morning beach routine already. Perth will get hot so expect high 36c to 42c in summer. A/C weather so you need to acclimatise before you should consider activities outdoors

Okay so you have learned a lesson about the seriousness of bushfire. Bunnings snag fish and chips on the beach. Yeah, you'll be alright
