I found the water-filled tote & board trap on Shawn Woods "Mousetrap Monday" channel at the beginning of August 2018. The timing was appropriate - I had just found a large underground yellowjacket nest, and I'm really allergic to those critters. So, I got a big tote - 60 litres (about 15 U,S. gallons?), found a board that laid across the top with about a 2" gap on either side, then wired the remains of a chicken carcass to the underside of the board. What was great about that trap (for me) was that i was able to tie a rope to the tote, fill it with water up to 2-3 inches from the rim, lay the board across, then pull the whole works right next to the underground nest opening with a long rope. They really wanted the meat, and as soon as they'd loaded up, they'd drop and touch the water (i'd put in a few drops of dish soap to reduce the surface tension), and drown. And they just kept coming. And coming. I'd guess the number caught at 1200-1500 (it turned out there were actually 2 nests close together). The fact that I could put it in the right spot by "remote control" was one reason I wanted to try it first. It worked really well, especially with the large container underneath. I'm glad to see you had similar results - sounds like you don't like yellowjackets any better than I do. Thanks for sharing this. The pheremone you mentioned is not available where I live, so the "tote trap" was great.
I don't like yellow jackets at all. We were quick to put the traps out this year and caught a lot of queens as the came out from hibernation. We hardly have any yellow jackets around. :)
I've tried this method, on a smaller scale....pretty much only killed a bunch of flies....yellow jackets didn't seem to like the flavor of cat food I used I guess.
I get my pheromone packets at my big box home store, the orange one if you get my drift. But I'm sure you can find them at any store that sells the green yellowjacket traps. :)
Something else you can do ,find the nest get a shop vac ,put the end of the hose, not in the hole but beside it so when they come out they will get sucked up,besure to put alittle soapy water in the bottom you will get alot .
Take a two liter soda bottle. Cut the top off where the curve levels out. Turn the top around and insert it backwards like a funnel after you put a bit of bait inside. This is what I use to catch gnats in my home when someone throws fruit in the trash. It should easily work with yellowjackets. I suppose you could rig it up with soapy water inside it standing up and maybe hot glue some bottle lids on the walls inside to put bait in. I`d try it.
Worth a shot. I will try it next spring when they start coming out of hibernation. Starting to get cold here already. Early winter has me working on the house as fast as I can. :)
@@KoalityofLife It`s still blazing hot here in Louisiana. I don`t mess around outside this time of year because of the yellowjackets. I was stung over 50 times the last time I accidentally disturbed a nest. It`s always a big surprise. LOL! You never see it coming.
I just smear pate style cat food on the underside of the boards, works the best,of course the attraction pack is an extra. I've cleared a couple 5 gallon buckets so far this summer.
No.. I wouldn't attract yellow jackets to a caged animal. It was a temporary cage for a chicken we had when we moved up here. Now we have more chickens and they are all in a big area. :)
Dude, if you are gonna have honey 🍯 bee hives then you best prepare yourself for a sting here and there! What the commenter Heather D. said is very true!! Usually it will take a drastic reason for a honey bee 🐝 to sting you, i.e. have a hand or finger in the wrong spot & squish or pinch one, you would possibly & probably get stung. So you must consider this. Good luck 🍀 👍🏼!!!
Just a thought what if you put the trap with the boards over at the one in the tree . The trap in the tree will bring the bees into it and the one with the boards will kill them . Just a idea good luck. Thanks for your video’s.
Rescue brand traps aren't working this year. Headed to Walmart to buy a plastic tote. I'm going to cut strips out of the lid to hold bait. They will snap on edge and are washable. I'll let you know how it works.
That a great idea, having something clip on makes it easy. Yes, please let me know how it works out. The yellow jackets are coming out where we are and I would like to keep them under control this year. :)
@@KoalityofLife good thing I ran across your video, cuz I've been wanting to raise bees. I didn't realize yellow jackets were honey thieves. I have some background in pest control, and wouldn't want to cross contamination. This is a great alternative to chemical !
I thought I explained it fairly well actually. The bait is held to the bottom of the board with 1/4 inch mesh and the bait is about 1/2 inch above the soapy water. Sorry for any misunderstanding, have a great day. :)
@@rabidcougar6465 use a deep dish pan. A board ( 1x5 fence board) and some cat food from a can. It smears well on a board The trick is soapy water about one inch below the water.
I agree. It was 11 minutes of chatting about an apparatus from a distance. I kept ff to see if you got to the trap and lifted up a board or something…nope. It’s a shame because you aren’t getting views or likes and yet you obviously were successful in trapping them. Maybe shorter video and actually show how you put it together. A thumbnail of all the dead wasps would get you a lot of clicks. But get to the pint and show how it’s done. People look for tutorials or instructions and don’t want endless chatter. A few small tweaks and you’ll be successful!
Sorry about that, you can usually get the pheromone packets at a home improvement store or any place that sells the traditional yellow wasp traps. Thanks for watching. :)
That's 1 chicken and it stayed in there at night so it was safe. All different now, we have 4 acres fenced off that our dogs and chickens can run in and a bigger coop because we have more chickens. Thanks for watching. :)
Thats not a dog water bowl, the little enclosure was where we had a chicken and we changed the water daily but the chicken would kick dirt around as they do and fill the water bowl with dirt. Thanks for the concern, hope this clears things up and thanks for watching. :)
Where can we get this pheromone wasp packet????
I seem to get this question a lot so I have an Amazon affiliate link to some in the description. Thanks for watching. :)
@@KoalityofLifewow thx. I did what you did with the tray and soapy water and chicken and cat food but only caught a few. I’ll order this. Thx

Interesting addition to the trap. I'm sure anything you put the wasp attractant on will bring them in by the dozens. lol.

Wet cat food works good as well.
Interesting, thank you. :)
I m trying this w bacon and its not working yet..(the board trap).
Thats odd. I have used lots of different meats with the same success. Maybe the wasps had a pig as a friend and are boycotting the pork. :)
@@KoalityofLife 😂😂😂🤣🤣🐖🐖🐖🐖🐷🐷
I didn't see how much liquid detergent you added to the water.
It only takes a few drops of soap to break the surface tension of the water so the wasps fall in and cant get out. :)
Put another (2nd) more effective trap, next to the lessor one. Rather then modify the the crappy one, while is being swarmed 👍 slay em !
We got our traps out early this year, not so many out there now. :)

You can spread stinky cat food on the board it stays on the board.
Interesting idea. I'll have to try that one. :)
Why put it on the dog pen???
If you put it where the wasps are flying around it attracts them better and traps them. :)
