Day 315: The Church’s Social Doctrine - The Catechism in a Year (with Fr. Mike Schmitz)

- This episode has been found to be in conformity with the Catechism by the Institute on the Catechism, under the Subcommittee on the Catechism, USCCB.
📖 Follow along with the official Catechism in a Year Reading Plan (AscensionPress...)
Together, with Fr. Mike, we examine both our respect for the integrity of creation as well as the Church’s broader social doctrine. Fr. Mike emphasizes that we owe animals kindness because they have been entrusted to our stewardship, but also that we must have a balanced relationship with them. He then goes on to examine the Church’s Social Doctrine in our postmodern world, focusing on capitalism, socialism, and communism. Today’s readings are Catechism paragraphs 2415-2425.
Please note: The Catechism of the Catholic Church contains adult themes that may not be suitable for children - parental discretion is advised.

The social doctrine of the Church is an organic development of the truth of the Gospel about the dignity of the human person and his social dimension, offering principles for reflection, criteria for judgement, and norms and guideline for action. People must treat animals with kindness as creatures of God and avoid both excessive love for them and an indiscriminate use of them, especially by scientific experiments that go beyond reasonable limits and entail needless suffering for the animals. The Church intervenes by making a moral judgement about economic and social matters when the fundamental rights of the person, the common good, or the salvation of souls requires it. Opposed to the social doctrine of the Church are economic and social systems that sacrifice the basic rights of the person other that make profit their exclusive norm or ultimate end e.g. communism, totalitarian forms of socialism and self-centred individualism in the practice of capitalism..
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Greetings! Dear CIY community. Spending money for relief of human suffering Vs spending money on pets / is controversial. The dignity of the human person comes before profit of the entrepreneur. One can't serve God and mammon. We have to be stewards of the earth and not dominion over the earth. We are not masters but stewards of God's creation. The dignity of the human person causes us to be kind to animals. God made us for leisure, for love, and for labor. There are limits in capitalism to disregard human dignity. Let us pray for Fr Mike Schmitz and all the clergy and our CIY/BIY community! and a big thanks to everyone. Amen.
❤🙏
An important, and amazing analysis of a fair and just way of working and conducting business as well as running an economy. It's true that we must care for human beings when practicing business and capitalism. Socialism, and communism sound great but due to their focus on non-human factors, and discouragement of faith in God, such societies can become anarchies or military dictatorships where individuals do not feel valued and are considered as a mere means of achieving a country's goal. May all of our governments, business people, and politicians get a sense of justice! Thank you so much for such a great study, Fr. Mike, and Team Ascension! I'm praying for you all, and for the fellow listeners. God bless 🙏🏻
Day 315
It is contrary to *human dignity* to cause animals to suffer or die needlessly.
God entrusted animals to the *stewardship* of those whom he creates in his own image. We are stewards and not owners
Amen.
My child’s feelings are hurt. I tell her she’s special. My child is injured. I do whatever it takes to make her feel better. My child is scared. I won’t go to sleep until she is secure.
Moments of comfort from a parent come naturally, willingly and joyfully. So why am I so reluctant to let my heavenly Father do the same for me? Why do I think He wouldn’t want to hear about my problems? Why do I think He’s too busy for me?
When I am criticized, injured, or afraid, there is a Father who is ready to comfort me. The same goes for you, my friend. There is a Father who will hold us until we are better, help us until we can live with the hurt, and who won’t go to sleep when we’re afraid of the dark. Ever! And that’s enough.
Prayers for your intentions ❤

I don't know what I would do without this perfect timed prayer; you are guided by the Holy Spirit; and by the nature of the prayer by the VM.
Part 2:
I dreamed that I was in a home visiting somewhere; the N. Shore of Long Island NY; Nassau County; something like S. Oyster Bay. Its shores are on the Long Island Sound.
I dreamed that it had spectacular views never seen before; it was a combination of naked mountains without vegetation; and they had ribbons of different colors.
Then there was a earthquake; and I was not terrified; I just watched on; surreal. Ironic because: it was a powerful earthquake and I did not run; just moved a little; and stepped away; like nothing.
The terrain was not a NY terrain; but maybe somewhere in the US it will be a place with a bay; and an earthquake will come; maybe. Its just a dream after all.
@@KB_2161 I made Beef Bourguignon; or Stew in red wine; French cuisine; also, the same in Quebec. The gravy with a hint of Maple Syrup. This is good for Keto. Fr Mike says businesses and industries can "crush individuals" as if that were comparable to governments crushing individuals. But the stark fact is that there are MANY competing businesses and industries (supposing the govt hasn't socialized or crushed competition) but only one government per nation. It's not really comparable at all. Workers can switch employers or industries relatively quickly, but you can't switch laws and governments very quickly or easily at all when they are oppressive, and everybody else's vote dilutes your power to change them.
ESG is a framework that is being bandied around by corporations and governments these days...
and here we have the cathecism (or catholic church's teaching) providing the foundation and principles on how we shd treat the environment and all its beings.

I am looking for people to please take a moment and pray with me for Souls in Purgatory. Can you help?
According to tradition, St. Gertrude the Great was told by Our Lord that each time she piously recited the following prayer, it would release 1,000 souls (or a vast number) from their suffering in purgatory:
Eternal Father,
I offer You the most precious blood
of thy Divine Son, Jesus,
in union with the Masses said
throughout the world today,
for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory,
for sinners everywhere,
for sinners in the universal Church,
for those in my own home,
and in my family. Amen.
In her account of another vision, St. Faustina describes Purgatory as a "great crowd of suffering souls" undergoing purification. Further, she says that the souls are "praying fervently, but to no avail, for themselves; only we can come to their aid" (Diary, 20)
Father I need your grace again because I am not the witness I want to be.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion,
have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We read The Jungle in English class junior year. We were not an AP class (they didn't have AP classes back then).
Despite being the daughter of a butcher, i'm a big fan of Genesis 1:29. Factory livestock and things like Lethal Dosage-50 testing (how much of a chemical does it take to be ingested before 50% of the test subjects die) seem awfully wrong, geared towards vain consumption, and not how the Lord would see His critters treated (and Ann Coulter's take on 'dominion' also stinks, imo...) CIY is great!!

Sadly, people don't treat God's animals with kindness, just go look in slaughterhouses, people who hunt, animals screaming in laboratories and we still haven't found cures as their bodies are different to ours. Our Heavenly Father must be so sad seeing what we do to his innocent, sentient creatures, just because we can 😢
Most hunters love the animals and their habitat more than most. A good hunter will not let his “catch” go to waste, but will eat it and thank God for it.
@Andiebrodie3936
I agree!!!

I understand the rejection of communism and socialism differently that you explained it. They are rejected because of the totalitarian and atheistic ideologies associated with them in our times. So it is also conditional, as is the case of capitalism. In the discussion of capitalism, I think it would be interesting to also mention fascism, which appears to be on the rise. Unfortunately, it is not mentioned here in the cathechism.
@rosie
Fascism has nothing to do with capitalism. Fascism is the ideological evil twin of communism. Each a radical left wing ideology where Big Govt "takes care" of you from cradle to grave. The "extreme" capitalist view would be totally free markets, free people, and total anarchy. Not attractive, but certainly not "fascism."
The earth created by God is good, given to us with dominion of a steward towards it for all generations. We owe kindness to animals, birds, trees and can use them for food and clothing as also keep them as pets. Yet we cannot cause them to suffer or die needlessly.
God has made human beings for leisure, love and labor. Our aim should not only be to make money, but to ensure that money is not made at the cost of human beings who must be given the dignity they deserve. They are vastly more important than any production organization, which reduces human beings to slaves and, in turn, idolizing money. "You cannot serve God and mammon".
The church rejects the ideologies associated with Communism, Socialism and Capitalism. These must have reasonable regulations for human beings to live without crushing individualism.
Eating animals IS making them suffer and die needlessly
The more I see of humans, the more I like my dogs
Right?!
So glad you called them dogs, and not your fur babies ....they are pets, period .
WHAT DO WE DO WHEN THE POPE IS TEACHING CONTRARY TO WHAT THE CATECHISM IS STATING/TEACHING?😟
"You can not serve God and mammon" do you believe in coincidences? That was today's gospel reading!
🤯💜🙏🏻👍🏼
Father Mike, is hunting animals for sport contrary to this section of the Catechism ?
I am not my dog’s mom. I cringe when people say that.
@@frankcorona8654..no animals are better than human. That's againts the Church teaching. Make me shudder that someone think that way.
What do you think of the most recent statement made by the Pope concerning transgenders in the Church?
re: spending money on animals - You have to spend some money on them for food, vaccinations, neutering/spaying, yearly check up, flea treatment or medication for an illness. That is part of the basic responsibilities you have as an owner. However, I dont think people should be spending thousands of dollars for a specific breed when you can get an animal at a shelter for low cost or even free. Every cat I've ever had has been found as a stray in my backyard!)
Also if you spend so much on your pet that you don't have any to give to charity, I think that would be problematic. For example, since I have no family, I give large amounts to various charites and the amount I give definitely exceeds what I spend on my 2 cats.
Those killing of animals and slaughtering of animals was regulated in the Jewish traditions for food. It’s talked about in the Bible, but nobody wants to talk about it or acknowledge that when you kill an animal to eat into repaired, you have to drain the blood first kill it properly, which is obvious, and then drain the blood and remove the blood from the encampment then, when you butchered cut up the meat on the altar of God that he gave them to do that. It is done in a proper way that protects gods people. The authors originally were used to prepare animals so that they could be at the priest could eat the remaining of after the sack after the sacrament and it was smoked in front of the temple In the Bible has talked about the incense that was used. It was really the smoke that was pleasing to the Lord that people are actually smoking the meat so the priest could eat it after that’s how you took care of our priest that’s how he’s always take care of our priest.
So we're to treat animals with kindness and be stewards of them, but it's OK to subject them to intensive farming measures known as CAFO's ( concentrated animal feeding operations) AKA FACTORY farm. We have commodified animals, taking away their dignity and seeing them as objects to be used and abused doing exactly the opposite of what this teaching states. There is no such thing as humanely slaughtering an animal, and yet here it is directly from the mouth of the Church that we are to not inflict suffering on animals. How to people rationalize eating meat since there is no humane way of taking a life of one of God's creatures? One of the biggest oxymorons is humane slaughter! Furthermore, we do not need to eat animals to survive - we have all been socialized and brainwashed by big Ag to think that we need milk and meat for good health which has made them all stinking filthy rich, and yet, it's killing millions of people with heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure etc. every year. No, we are intended to eat the way God first instructed us in the Garden of Eden. Genesis 1:29-30: God said, 'See, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food. All will be eating plants in the New Jerusalem even the lion ( check your Bible). Also there's a new documentary coming out that discusses if Jesus ate meat or not and if he slaughtered animals or not - check out the trailer on RUclips , it's called "Christspiracy" and many priests are speaking out about this. Unfortunately, I can't add the link or I'll be thrown in YT jail as you're not allowed to post links from other channels. Just search it out and keep an open mind.
Factory farming practices is indeed a moral problem that many people don't know about or even care to investigate. I think if they actually saw what went on, they'd soon change what they buy at the store. I believe Pope Francis wrote a paper on the need to return to small farms both as a matter of human rights and the rights of animals. I've not read the paper but believe that is the gist of it.
On a personal level, I've been trying to only buy meat from small farms that are certified humanely raised and humanely processed. This means they are pasture raised in small groups with access to sun, grass and natural food sources. The processing is done on site or nearby as opposed to being transported long distances which adds to the animals' stress and risk of injury.
It's very hard to find locally but I think the concept is gaining in popularity. The big issue is that it is often more expensive. My personal belief is that I've been blessed with a good income so I should spend some of that money supporting more ethical farming. However, a single mom with three kids and working two jobs, wouldn't be expected to.
You are exactly right!!!
Thanks for the documentary info! I will be looking for it
