@@francescaa8331 If we're building off of the Russia theory, perhaps they're inhabitants of a former Potemkin Village. Every place Mark visits in the outside world appears desolate, like a liminal space. He and his date are the only ones ever at a restaurant besides the staff, the town square is empty other than the protesters and the one punk show, all the neighborhoods the outies live in sit mostly empty.
Dan Erickson has cited the Backrooms as an influence, so perhaps there is a "liminal spaces" theme in the show.

I thought that the outside world was an adult human body the moment that I heard “206 countries”, I thought “like bones?”
When you look at the Dad character and how he seems to have multiple consciousnesses vying for control of his body, it made me think “oh! Maybe WE’RE inside a body”. If the world outside is being built by many different consciousnesses, if would explain why there are cars from many older decades alongside mobile phones and whatnot. Too many cooks in the kitchen, so to speak.

The Eagan motto "A Cure for Mankind" has a lottle bit of a Twilight Zone "To Searve Man" vibe. Depending on the way you interpret the syntax, it could mean "To cure man of disease" or "To cure earth of man, who is the disease."
The Eagan quote "The light of discovery shines truer upon a virgin meadow than a beaten path," could mean Eagon is trying to create blank slates from which to create mankind's superior replacement.

Given all the religious allegory and symbolism throughout the show the one theory I've thought of is that the entire severance world is some sort of quasi-purgatory. The word kier means a large metal vat in which fibers, yarns, and fabrics are boiled off, bleached, or dyed. I automatically thought of the painting of Kier standing over the large vat stirring it and it reminded me of all the Biblical references of God as being a purifier, separating and burning off the chaff from the wheat, washing away the sins from the world, separating the goats and sheep, burning away the dross from silver, etc. Water, goats, chemical processes, Macro Data "Refinement", all part of Lumon's business . The one last thing I'd like to add is that the state abbreviation PE. In the Hebrew language the 17th letter is Peh, which in the Bible is abbreviated as PE in Psalm 119:129. That refers to the human mouth, since the shape of the letter itself looks like a mouth. Could the location Kier, PE be literally be translated as "The mouth of the vat"?. I don't know I have a zillion ideas about the show and it continues to be a fascinating piece of TV.

Another hint that the outside world is not real, is the number of countries in which Lumon operates. It is said it operates in 206 countries, although the planet has 195.
For me the whole thing (outside world and severed floor) feels somewhat dreamy, surrealistic (the visual thing that happens to Irvin, for example). It feels like a collective dream or reality in which people could be severed several times.

I have a feeling, that some of this story may end up aligning to the current accelerationist ideology that many tech bros believe. That humanity's current political and economic structures are failing and that the way to solve this is creating corporation like cities where people live in a technological utopia. The issue is, that what is a capitalistic society at it's most direct version? A variation of Lumen. In reality, you cannot control a society to that level and thus people's emotions and tendency to want to leave the society comes into the equation. A society where a company wants you to be fully separated from your private life, and if I may be so bold for you to have your work personality on at all hours of the day, all days a week (regardless of vacation or not) and during your at home time.

Both outside and inside is what Baudrillard (Matrix remember?) called hyperreality. It’s when reality is completely artificial and nothing is real. I think they are in the US. Because the other Mark said he came from Grand Rapids, they mentioned they got the other folks from New Jersey, the woman Mark was dating was from Minnesota, Helly, mentioned Delaware.
but I think their headquarters and campus are “severed” from larger cities. Like Googleplex, Disney, Alcoa, Tennessee, named for the Aluminum Corporation of America factory; Pullman, IL (now part of south Chicago) named for the man and company that manufactured railway sleeping-cars.
I think it’s carved out as separate due to when Lumon was founded and the impact of the Civil War and the town is kept off the map, because Lumon wants to control its own city, include protecting its privacy (another reason why there isn’t a whole lot of update technology).
It might have so many entities ran by the Eagans, it has the ability to be considered its own private property. Moreover they had a senator that discussed legislating Lumon. Not saying there are no other senators in other types of government systems but there is too many evidence they are in America than any where else.

Yeah, outside world is very strange. That first dinner without food, implying they don't have to eat and do it only just for personal pleasure. Darkness and sparse use of light in town, almost like they use energy saving motion activated lamps or something, implying ecological worry or energy crisis. Many buildings and spaces in town seem destroyed or abandoned, like University Mark and Gemma were teaching before joining Lumon look like it's falling apart with rubble covering the floor of research lab and again - no lights, security surveillance or guards anywhere, strange for campus building. Something strange going on with healthcare if rich lady and middle class women had to use wet nurse and rustic cottage instead of hospital and obgyn specialist. Also every car in town is pretty old, not a single modern vehicle anywhere - why? I think it either some kind of simulation or post apocalyptic society that looks relatively nice because they in total control of weird megacorporation that using people for experimentation, outside of this artificial town it maybe hell. Maybe it not just winter, but nuclear winter.

But then, life throws an unexpected wrench-like the loss of a loved one-that disrupts everything. In a similar way, I wonder if we are watching an example of AI quietly using our devices, like phones, to not only listen to those around us but also gather personal details we’ve shared, searched online, or even ambient sounds. It feels like AI is attempting to piece together who they are, what they feel, and how they navigate what it assumes to be a world city...creating its own interpretation of us...from the work computer lol
