@@Robuilt Gosh, IDK. My husband and I drove through Houston when we moved from East TN back to CA last year, and it looked like it had just blown up with development. I’d love to go back and spend some time checking out the art and food scene. My memories of Houston are mostly positive, but it took me a good year to fall in love with the place. That was the first big city I lived in (I grew up in rural East TN) and the change from my country life to Houston was much more of an adjustment than the change from Houston to L.A. Anyway…watching your video has renewed my interest in Houston and Texas in general. Love your perspective. Always fair and open minded. Cheers!
Ive lived all over both coasts while in the Navy myself and married to a 20+ yr Navy and corporate man and lived in CA (Sacramento - Citrus Heights and Oroville) and Humble/ Fort Worth/Keller and now back to Humble in 2019 after fleeing the PG&E fires in Butte (Oroville area) and can say with certainty I would never ever move back to the state of California. Not only is CA not affordable, but the massive amount of homelessness, crime, drug use ( not counting Weed) huge huge utility bills was a moment of "clarity" for my family to get out. The Northern part of Houston is growing yet I was able to purchase my 3 bed/ 2 bath 1600+ sq ft home for $150k on a corner lot. My gas bill in March 2022 was $98 and electric bill was $118, water/sewer was $67. Where can you live in CA like this? You cant.
I’ve considered moving to Texas from California many times, and love it there, but it can’t ignore the fact that it’s about to become even *more* hostile for women of child-bearing age 🤷🏼♀️. So there’s no way I’d move my family there today. But… I did find it too hard to be in California - I have a horse farm, and water restriction was starting to get scary. So we moved to PNW 4 years’ ago and I could not be happier 🤗. I still think Texas is a great place. Just not necessarily safe for *everyone*.
@@BirdseyeVu partly true. But I wouldn’t be too quick to claim this. Texas had the highest number of infant deaths in 2020 than any other state. And not just because it’s a bigger state… it also has one of the higher infant mortality rates (though not THE highest). California has a significantly lower infant mortality rate than Texas, but still not good compared to other places in the world…
Current west coast resident here (Az) who will be moving back home to Tx (Dallas) in the near future for the very same reason! Ive been here for almost a decade so it’s time for a change. Totally agree with you on the kolaches! It took a quite a while to adjust to no longer having them once when I first moved here.
I lived in CA for 16 years until I was 22 and TX for maybe 3 years in my adult life and now live in Colorado. I couldn’t stand living in hot humid, mosquito weather with little do to outside (also from Houston area). So Colorado it was! Lol. My husband and I couldn’t wait to move out of Texas even with family there. I was so depressed living there and tried to make the best out of it, but after growing up in mountains and outdoors is a culture shock to live in “cement city” aka Houston. My husband is 100% disabled vet so we wouldn’t have to pay property tax in Texas but even that’s not enough to keep us there LOL. I couldn’t and wouldn’t move back to California for many reasons now even though the weather, beach, and mountains were amazing. Colorado is a great middle ground in my opinion.
I moved from Metro DC area back to California. Silicon Valley is great. Our quality of life is 100% so much better. Never moving out of California ever again. Here til I die.
Hello. I like your list. May I add a number 11 to your list? In Texas people are kind to each other when on the roads. They'll hang back and let you in as you are merging and when they do, the proper response is to wave your hand in front of your rear view mirror to say Thank You. They will often wave back to acknowledge your recognition of their kindness. Also, when driving in the country parts of Texas, people will pull over to half of their lane and the shoulder of the road. This message is, I acknowledge that you may want to pass me and I'm making it easier for you to do so. Then the thank you wave follows again. It's about courtesy. So if y'all are moving here, please move here and adopt these road language skills and kindnesses. The more of us are doing the right thing, the less road rage and the like there will be. One other thing, please do your best to not drive up the cost of housing. Somehow that happened in Santa Fe New Mexico when we lived in another part of the state. The old-timers on a fixed income got run out of town because it got so expensive. I know you like the less expensive houses and the lower taxes, but if we're not careful all of the things you like will be gone. It's all of our jobs to keep the nice things nice for everyone. We'll, y'all, have a blessed day. Yeah, you hear that a lot down here too. 🙂🙂🙂
I understand what you mean and I can agree to a degree. . The bigger cities have many transplants from other places or people in rental cars.. I'm originally from Maryland/DC area and when I moved to LA for a short term job in the 80s, I fit in quite well with drivers. So much in fact that when a guy came to visit me from Wisconsin, I didn't let him drive my car for risk that he wasn't savy enough to know how it works out there. Texas now, is even better that in the late 80s in those other two places where I drove.
Duude, you forgot to mention all the toll roads in Houston!! Also geography, Houston is like swamp land. Not a mountain for 100s of miles. Outdoor activities suuuck. 😂 I prefer San Antonio but SoCal will always be home. To each their own. ✌
WISCONSIN is the cheapest place to drink on earth and the most popular drink in the state is an Old Fashioned. You'd be hard pressed to find one for over $6-$8.
All true!😂 I lived in LA for 4 years and am back in my hometown of San Antonio. The queso/shredded cheese thing actually happened to me. Gotta love Mexicali😆
Yeah, the heat here in Texas this year is terrible. Definitely the hottest overall year in a good while. I was born here, and I am hot natured and have never gotten "used" to it. Ugh.
Did you forget the price of cocktail prices, queso, Tex/Mex, lack of traffic, seasonality and midcentury modern houses in KC?? We share some of the bad too lol
Everyone calls them "kolaches" because they're *kinda like* kolache and it's easier to pronounce than the real name, klobásník. If you want to impress a Czech, use the real name. You will be their hero. Source: am one quarter Czech.
I was just back in LA for a visit and everyone in LA is so skinny and pretty, most everyone in TX is fat. Friends in the industry is nice and meeting (and hanging out with) random celebs in LA is a real thing. For crawfish, go to Louisiana where they do it right, Texas is like Louisina light when it comes to bayou cooking. Otherwise, sort of solid listicle. ;)
Dude you guys need to chill out, I went to visit TX, and did not had the best experience even though everyone claimed Austin is super friendly. Second time i came to Texas I had a great time so defenetly dint judge a book by its cover. And also guys there is a lot of.people of Ca who are not agreeing with its politics, so embrace your people we are all from the USA.
To offer some perspective on Cali, Sacramento is much different than L.A. No traffic issues, open land, feeder roads, Great weather. And it’s the Capitol of Cali.
My wife teaches Czech and the word kolaches drives her nuts. Kolach is the singular and kolache is the plural. Adding and s to the end of the plural word does not make it more plural. Know you know too.
After talking to her about this, I also found out that Texans have made the term kolach apply to many more things than it did in the mother country. Kolach are open faced pastries with a jam type filling. What Rob was talking about are called something else everywhere but Texas.
Rob have you met up with Sean Rakidzich, Airbnb Automated? You guys are neighbors now. It would be awesome if you could do a video together! You both seem like really good guys and it would be fun to see you interact
How the F didn't you mention how California has prop 13? Texas can tax u out your home. My friends grandma's property tax went up to over a thousand bucks a month in 07 because value went up, so they taxed more. So sad. Growing up in California, my dad always said, "at least we have prop 13". Seriously, look it up. Then get Texas to pass it or similar, plz
The property tax issue here in Texas is one of the biggest things folks just totally gloss over when they talk about the financial incentives of relocating here from California. And something that a LOT of the buyers in the past 24 months or so are feeling the crunch of right at this moment. One of, but not the only, reason we're getting out of Texas after lived here my entire life.
This should be C vs Houstonish. Texas has differences in every region. Architecture is better in Austin/Hill country/SA. Dallas is more like OC. WEATHER is better in SA than Dallas. If you’re about weather and want to move to TX live more central/south and away from the gulf. Far south from tornadoes as well. Food is by far better and more variety in Texas. Not even a question. Animals/insects are abundant in TX. California could be better if taxes were more friendly and cities made better political moves.
Ok you can’t talk about Tex-Mex and Torchy’s you’re killing me here. Kinda funny that you move back to Houston from Sevierville and I move from Houston to Sevierville…. Should I take it personal?! I knew you had moved back to Houston since your video when you were walking around outside. It looked too much like the heights area. Enjoy the 100 degree with 100% humidity weather!
Eh, idk, my family has been in Texas since before it was a state (ex. pre 1700s, pre- columbian)... Tejana through and through if you will or native Texan. I tend to lean right when it comes to economic policies and left social policies; hence, I'm tolerant of different people from different backgrounds. It comes with the territory. Welcome if you move here - just be sure to clean up after yourself. I'll have to say, Texas may soon become a swing state especially if the larger cities bring in more transplants. It's inevitable. On the bright side, most city slickers stick with city living and stay out of rural areas. Hence, driving up the cost of living in cities. 😊 I'm cool with that because I love the country. Ha, not my circus. As far as frontage roads when I moved out of Texas , west annoyed me. Yall had no toll roads and frontage roads. There was HOV lanes in AZ but that was a new concept. Lol. And I agree Cali Mexican food is 2nd class to Tex Mexican food. Cali Mexican food is more gourmet Mexican food with Hollywood influence i.e. clean eating and radishes lol It caters to a certain crowd.

OMG! Yesssss!!! Only 7:05 in, and I had to pause to say I miss Kolaches SO MUCH!!! Lived in The Heights in Houston from ‘90-‘94, and the food was definitely one of the huge pluses. Love Houston! Good memories there. 🤠
I heard it was a totally different place back then! What was it like?
Cheers!
@@daphnehill8444 love it! Honestly, I wasn’t am much of a Houston guy myself. But now that I’m back, I couldn’t love this city any more.
@@Robuilt That’s awesome! So great that you can be near family, too. So happy for you and your success. Love it when good people do well.
try the Kolache Factory in Huntington Beach
You cant.
As a W2 employee, having no state income tax in Texas is pretty great too.
Together we would take home 20k more than in the state we currently live in combined lol
Thank you. Please don't come to TX.
@@camdan437 right? wtf is wrong with these people, "Texas is about to become even MORE hostile for women of child-bearing age"...stay in CA, PLEASE
Texas = safer for babies🥰
@@BirdseyeVu partly true. But I wouldn’t be too quick to claim this. Texas had the highest number of infant deaths in 2020 than any other state. And not just because it’s a bigger state… it also has one of the higher infant mortality rates (though not THE highest).
California has a significantly lower infant mortality rate than Texas, but still not good compared to other places in the world…
@@KathySierraVideo Only if you don't count unborn infants..
Current west coast resident here (Az) who will be moving back home to Tx (Dallas) in the near future for the very same reason! Ive been here for almost a decade so it’s time for a change. Totally agree with you on the kolaches! It took a quite a while to adjust to no longer having them once when I first moved here.
There’s some Spanish architecture in Westlake Hills (Austin), but it’s definitely a lot less common.
Just wait until you start seeing the F-350s
I live in CA and I eat crawfish once a month. We have tons of crawfish in Orange County. Granted, it is much more expensive than when I’m in Houston.
that close up confession about the craw-fish was so funny.
What you called a "kolache" is actually a krobesnik. You need to head Hurskas or Weikles... they will learn ya! 🤠
I grew up calling them klobásník. My favorite kolache is apricot.
Do you have meetups ever in Houston? Would love to meet you!
You're comparing Texas to LA, not California
I moved from Metro DC area back to California. Silicon Valley is great. Our quality of life is 100% so much better. Never moving out of California ever again. Here til I die.
Rob how are you not going to compare the topography? Love the videos man! Congrats on moving home!
Super fan! The edit with Ashlee LOL
this was a great video. and welcome back to texas. and enjoy houston swamp weather sincerely austin resident chilling on the water with clear skies
i don't know about that..., I live in NJ and go back to Dallas and I see more road rage down in TX than here
I understand what you mean and I can agree to a degree.
YEP, SOCAL FOR THE WIN!!!
I’m sure the 0 percent state income tax wasn’t a factor at your current income
WISCONSIN is the cheapest place to drink on earth and the most popular drink in the state is an Old Fashioned. You'd be hard pressed to find one for over $6-$8.
Welcome to Houston. It’s a gritty city but it has a lot to offer and quite a scene. Best of all, it’s not a pretentious dump. 2 words: Mexican Martini
What about abortion rights in Texas. Classy
On point!!!
Ugh.
It’s hard to find good gumbo at a restaurant, but Houston’s got some good ones. Boudreauxs is a good starting place.
I’m a Papadeaux man myself.
@@Robuilt that's a soy boy restaurant.
Welcome to Houston! Glad you didnt decide to go to Austin like the rest lol what area did you move to?
I’m a Superfan from San Antonio! Love your videos Rob! Come check out the Hill Country and our rivers when you’re in our area!
Regarding the Proprietary Food: amen, amen, and amen! Preach! Texas really does have amazing food. Totally agree that Torchy’s queso is the best!
Glad y'all came back to Texas. I moved back to Houston area after UT and I still love it. We're big and diverse but it's a real community at heart.
What you need to know it isn’t that hick here. Not everyone wears a cowboy hat. Unless you go to a rodeo
H-town! Nice! See ya on the west side in the burbs!
Otherwise, sort of solid listicle. ;)
I'm just binging on Robuilt, there's hope here.
Okay, the kolache montage makes me want to move there.
My goodness I remember when you posted that video & the comments 🥴 lol.
Don’t California my Texas. Keep Texas Red. Vote 2022
All of the big cities already vote blue in tx
To offer some perspective on Cali, Sacramento is much different than L.A. No traffic issues, open land, feeder roads, Great weather. And it’s the Capitol of Cali.
Awesome. Hope I can run into you in htown one day. If you ever go to a RE meet up, let us houstonians know
My wife teaches Czech and the word kolaches drives her nuts.
H‑E‑B is pretty freaking awesome
As a Cajun, glad you’re enjoying the crawfish. And hello, Texas BBQ! Hard to get good brisket in CA.
Ah.. missed a perfect Joe's apartment reference 🤣
Rob have you met up with Sean Rakidzich, Airbnb Automated? You guys are neighbors now. It would be awesome if you could do a video together! You both seem like really good guys and it would be fun to see you interact
Next time you're visiting your WI airbnb go just about anywhere and get an Old Fashioned.
Queso?! Breakfast taco?! Bruh...🤣
Kolaches are SO GOOD!!! Anthony Bourdain said the best food is in Houston fwiw 🧐
We're literally moving to Houston right now. How cool is that! :)
which cleaning company do you use in Houston?
Old fashions are the best in WI! But plan on it having brandy and being less than $10.
You're welcomed. Just keep Texas, Texas.
This aged well.
starts at 3:00
ROB!! I’m a realtor here in Houston. LET’S DO HAPPY HOUR!! Drinks on me.
Don't condone these shitlibs in our great city.
What do you feel about Airbnb in Tampa Fl market
COME BACK TO BEAUTIFUL CALI ALREADY, ROB!!!
Super fan!
Welcome Back to Texas!!!! I see you are partnering up with Shelby Church on the desert build... are you looking for partners in Texas? 🤔
Gotta switch up to Waze my guy haha
ROB COME TO EL PASO TX - an you will get a $5.00 cocktail 🍹
And we have amazing Queso 🧀 too!!. Are sister city is Juarez, Mx 🇲🇽 so you can just imagine
the spongebob song is great
I never comment, but damn if you didn't hit the politically diverse viewpoint club I want to subscribe to on the head. I think the majority of the USA share this, but are just fed up with hearing about it all.. let's all be dope and have a great time 🤩
I know what a kolaches are! We have a place that makes delicious ones in Ohio.
Superfan here.
