Starting with snorkeling might help, too. Get used to breathing through a mouthpiece and your ears being below the water level, but you have the security of having the surface right there if you get anxious. Eventually, you’ll be used to how everything sounds and it won’t be a source of anxiety anymore. :)

Your mystery mineral is definitely pyrite. You could actually get a few bucks out of pieces like that, collectors love specimens that are still half embedded in the matrix they grow in like that white stone. And the nice thing about thin slabs like those is they usually crack where the pyrite inclusion is located so they're not hard to expose nice surfaces.

I found a GPS handheld back in the late '90s floating in a waterproof bag in Lake Michigan. It led me right to the owner's home, which happened to be in the city I lived in at the time. It had fallen overboard during the Chicago to Mackinac sailing race. It was a good feeling to be able to return a fairly expensive (at the time) piece of equipment to someone who thought it was gone forever.

Granted RUclips just randomly recommended this video to me and I haven't seen any of this channel's videos before so I don't know how common it is to find so many clothes and cell phones underwater. I just thought about how tightly people hold onto their phones so the thought of finding not just one, but two cell phones and all those clothes just made me alarmed and anxious. I am glad it was something non-nefarious. 👍
