I think the number of cold water bass you were able to hook up on has surprised all of us.... maybe even you. I was pleased with your thinking about being around cold weather water. Accidents can happen anywhere or anytime. It made me think about my old Boy Scouting days (i was a scout, leader and supporter until several years ago), a lot has now changed. One of the biggest challenges of fire starting is to find dry enough wood to get it going. Case in point, our scout troop went canoeing on the Rockcastle river, Laurel Co. Kentucky on a November day (many, many years ago), As a leader, I had to take an unexperienced 10 year fellow with me. He wasn't able to always be still in the bottom of the canoe, and caused us to flip out in the cold water. The whole troop had to get out of the water and build a fire. Careful planning meant that I had a change of clothes and able to warm up by the fire. The young scout didn't heed previous rules and advice and hadn't brought any . He suffered that day. After that trip he never came back to the Scout Troop ! Sorry I digress, many memories. As always, please be careful . Pap Blevins

Great choice for the maiden voyage of 2024. Checked out a little stretch of river and got surprised by some aggressive fish. Thanks for sharing the safety part. I have extra clothes, gloves and insulated face mask in my trunk for winter. We hit negative double digits this past week in Chicago. And the first aid kit came in handy when I split open my finger during a trip last year. Blessings brother
I’m doing all the same stuff but can’t buy a bite. It’s my first winter fishing so it’s been tough going. It’s been two months of learning what not to do to catch fish in cold water. I did make it on the water with my kayak New Year’s Day. It was cold, even spitting snow. No fish but I enjoyed the challenge. Thanks for showing that they are out there and biting. That helps keep me looking for the next fish and/or fishing adventure.
John to be honest until this year I had forgotten what makes fishing fun for me. And to be honest that is finding new places to fish or just a cool place to visit. And if I haven’t said it before thank you for putting the verses up at the end of each video. I like the content to be honest but the Verses are great.
A nice addition to your fire starter kit is a bag of wood pellets. If you can get em lit on a grate or in a rock bed they burn for awhile. I also carry a vegetable steamer caulender as a makeshift firestove/firepit.

That was a good winter day on the water! Wish I could still fish from a yak, but my back wont allow that anymore. Be careful out there, that water is cold!
As a whitewater kayaker who spends a lot of time in cold water, may I suggest two things? The first and most important is a dry suit. Wear synthetics under it, wool and fleece are great options. Anything but cotton. Treat the gaskets with 100% silicone (trident makes it in a small jar found in dive shops or Amazon). You could go for a swim with a much lower risk for emergency, especially when you’re solo. I have swam cold water in a dry suit, and can say that even in a dry suit that cold water will pull energy from you quicker than you might think. I don’t want to preach too much, but I do worry about the dangers of cold water. Also wet suits aren’t very effective due to evaporative cooling, so save that money. Dry suit is the way to go. The second one is if you’re looking for a bomb proof dry bag. Check out watershed bags. They aren’t cheap, but they stay dry, are very durable, and are made in western NC! There is a trick to opening them, be sure to look into that if you buy one, but it is easy to do. Take care, and thanks for the content you provide. I enjoy your less serious, more relaxed take on fishing. I burnt myself out years ago, but am slowly getting back out there again.

I KNEW I should have fished a couple of weeks ago when the weather wasn’t too bad. I’m sitting here now with 25-40mph winds forecast, and a cold front that will have temps in the single digits for at least a week. I’m glad you got out and caught a bunch. Nothing better than being successful during the tough times of the year.
John I fished on Lake Cumberland during a cold Christmas, and ice froze in the guides, and we had dip it in the water to clear the ice. Still we caught largemouth on a weedless jig with a chartreuse trailer. In the cold we had to use feel or we would never have caught them. It was really slow.
It's easy enough to go for an unintended cold winter swim if you fish during the winter or do ice fishing. Make sure you can make a fire fast if you need to. Thanks for showing that.

You catch more fish in the winter Than I do in the Spring summer and fall. You just seem to be able to find fish wherever you go, John. Looks like the wind Wasn't blowing too bad. That had to make it better. Still a cold day. We are looking at single digits in Indiana also below 0. Wind has been pretty stiff here.

Cold and wet is a killer. Hypothermia is no joke. Glad you carry some dry clothes and fire making kit. You might want to consider a bit more for winter but anything is better than nothing.

Just think a couple of yrs ago you wouldn't be fishing in the winter, but it looked fun, don't fight catching bass, that's the best besides crappie! I'm glad that you got some protection on getting wet if something happened, God forbid, I would throw a towel in there & maybe an extra pair if clothes & socks!👍

I’ve always wondered if you fished right next to me on the bank while I’m getting skunked if you’d be catching fish. Probably so. Did i mention I’m on a four skunk streak?
It’s plastic think about it you do that enough times you’re gonna poke a hole through the bottom of it I just couldn’t spend that much money on a nice kayak like that and drag it across rocks. I only have a $300 fishing kayak and I’ll pick it up off the ground and carry it where I need to unless I’m on grass and then I’ll drag it across grass, but no rocks no cement cause it was just tear up the whole bottom of it and you’ll put holes in it. Yeah it’s hard plastic but plastic plastic.
