Nissan have a huge, HUGE problem with reliabilty, especially in third year and on. I know a few people who keep swearing and cursing the day they bought Nissan. The new Altima need to a new CVT transmission with physical launch gear. Also, the AWD should be available with VC turbo engine. Thanks, Alex, great review as always. Waiting for the full review.
The fact that AWD can’t be had on the more powerful engine is unacceptable in my book. I mean, what the hell was Nissan thinking? It’s a shame because this is a VERY attractive sedan but if I have to choose between AWD or the more powerful engine... I’ll just wait for Mazda to add it to their turbocharged Mazda 6 or Toyota to add it to the V6 Camry.

Hi Alex, I would like to make a business case to folks @ Nissan. Why don't they do SR version like they did in 2016-2018 Maxima. Hear me out. A sport tuned suspension, paddle sifters, cloth bucket seats, 19" rims, Premium sound system, Sunroof and VC Turbo with AWD. There is no need for 360 camera, leather seats and other extra. If they can do this and keep the price comparable to SL model I personally believe this car will sell like a hot cake. I currently own 2018 Nissan Maxima SR. And I wish it had AWD. I test drive this new Altima and compared to Maxima Altima CVT felt slow slugish. What are your thoughts? Also please let me know if you think that what I am proposing is a good idea?
Don't like the tablet on dash trend. Looks cheap. And unfortunately there is a good deal of knee jerk Nissan hate out there. I've owned a few and they're quite good, especially the sweet V6 Maxima hooked to the updated cvt. Smooooth power delivery. And fast.
I didn't like it either and I just bought one of these because of the other features. Turns out that tablet on the top of the dash is much better for visibility and ease of use, as opposed to looking down to the middle of the center stack. Less likely to take your eyes off the road. My opinion has since changed.
The problem with Nissan though is their CVT crap transmissions that is what really hurts Nissan or those cvts they have so many problems with their CVTs so much so I just avoid Nissan cars like the plague. I do own a Nissan vehicle but it's a Titan pickup truck and it's been good but the car's I know so many people with him and they have around 90,000 miles on their cars and the transmissions go out those are ones with cvts. So unfortunately no matter how good this car is it's the transmission that's keeping me from looking further.
Nissan spends more money on concepts and gimmicks than any of there real vehicles and it shows. What a sad company has become. CVT everything and add cheapness is there new motto. Interior reminds me of my Malibu re talk I had last week with that awful wood thing. Personally I'd just wait for the Mazda 3 AWD if AWD was a requirement
@@cedricm5153 So does the KIA Forte, better than the RAV4, for example. And it, at least, is a sedan. Justice - Alex the Californian has to deal with the cold, cruel realities of winter!!! As for the Altima, it has the worst rear legroom and headroom in the newest release in the segment. When will the war on tall passengers end? #SaveHeadRoom.
Totally agree with you on this one. This Altima is the longest overall and yet comes up short on leg rooms.
Altima salesperson to potential customer..."Hey, check out our new Altima. Pretty powerful turbo4 and AWD. Uh...should mention though that you can't get both on the same vehicle. Could I interest you in buying two?" What on earth is Nissan thinking?
My SR has paddles
The new Altima need to a new CVT transmission with physical launch gear. Also, the AWD should be available with VC turbo engine.
Thanks, Alex, great review as always. Waiting for the full review.
No
The fact that AWD can’t be had on the more powerful engine is unacceptable in my book.
I have a 2005 Altima and I would’ve gotten this if it didn’t have a CVT. I just don’t like the way they feel and obviously the reliability issue everyone talks about.
Try the new one. Drives very differently. Feels almost (remember I said almost) like a regular tranny.
Too bad they don't offer the AWD in the 2-liter turbo.
Yeah, and how many customers are going to buy it if they offer on the 2.0L? Am sure Nissan has done their research and opt not too. Look at the old Rav4 V6, not many got sold so Toyota X the baby. They are in for making money not making few hundred people happy.
Hi Alex,
I would like to make a business case to folks @ Nissan.
Also please let me know if you think that what I am proposing is a good idea?
get a Kia Stinger... anyway can only get the 4wd model here in cdn .
Probably this one

Don't like the tablet on dash trend. Looks cheap. And unfortunately there is a good deal of knee jerk Nissan hate out there. I've owned a few and they're quite good, especially the sweet V6 Maxima hooked to the updated cvt. Smooooth power delivery. And fast.
I didn't like it either and I just bought one of these because of the other features. Turns out that tablet on the top of the dash is much better for visibility and ease of use, as opposed to looking down to the middle of the center stack. Less likely to take your eyes off the road. My opinion has since changed.
Canadians don't even have the option to get a 2.0T
The AWD system on the legacy is vastly superior

The problem with Nissan though is their CVT crap transmissions that is what really hurts Nissan or those cvts they have so many problems with their CVTs so much so I just avoid Nissan cars like the plague. I do own a Nissan vehicle but it's a Titan pickup truck and it's been good but the car's I know so many people with him and they have around 90,000 miles on their cars and the transmissions go out those are ones with cvts. So unfortunately no matter how good this car is it's the transmission that's keeping me from looking further.
Sedans look so similar nowadays
camry best in class
I test drove this. The CVT transmission is absolute trash.
Let's hear all the cvt comments
It's the constantly vilified transmission.
Stinter
I like it but too expensive
Dealers work discounts all the time on these. You must be willing to negotiate.
Nissan found a good front facial design. If they can keep up reliability race, they would beat Toyota.
Oh Canada! Burrrrrrr. #MtlOldStompingGrounds #JeMeSouviens
C'est quoi le rapport ?
Nissan dropped the ball with AWD crap. For starters just put a REAL transmission and natural aspirated engine in the dam car.
Shut up
You can’t get the awd with the new turbo engine so... I’ll pass
If only Nissan were more reliable
the cvt will be destroyed by 30k second transmission will be at 60k... the engine replaced at 100k.. this car sucks dont buy
Just stopped in to say LOL 30 MPG.
CVT, RUN! when you hear this word.
I think Ford is the king of low substance. Their new ads irritate me--nothing but noncommittal, disingenuous pandering!
30 MPG!? Eeeewwww. Get a toyota Rav-4 Hybrid instead. :^)
Gee, didn't realize the RAV-4 comes in a four door sedan flavor.
@@stephenhendricks103 The point is the Rav-4 Hybrid gets much better MPG.
@@cedricm5153 So does the KIA Forte, better than the RAV4, for example. And it, at least, is a sedan. There are any number of vehicles that get equal or better fuel efficiency numbers in other product segments. And of course almost any hybrid gets better mileage than a conventional internal combustion engine. The Accord and Camry, for example. And again, they're actually in the same product category.
@@cedricm5153 then why not get a Prius AWD, 50mpg
Not everyone wants a hybrid
Over priced pile of shit... NO Sale.
