You have to take it as PROs playing this rally. They can go like this pretty much endlessly. If Monfils didnt try to win the point he might have make it much longer but he tried to win and did mistake because that takes much more skill. But because he placed his shot to the middle right for his opponent he didnt manage to recover. This rally is really bad.

The first 50 or so strokes until the two actually started hitting with authority were exemplary pushing, not because of the long rally itself, but because there were no attempts to draw a weak reply or a forced error, or hit an outright winner. Pushing = feeding passive balls when not being on the defensive (hence, having the opportunity to attack).

Simon always plays so safe and defensive and it feels like he never puts any power behind his swings. I could never watch a full match with this guy. At least Monfils does some risky and unorthodox things sometimes.

It's not about taking more risks than your opponent, it's about playing better tennis than your opponent.

Some players have made great careers (incl. Slams) by playing defensive-looking tennis. Never great to watch, but accumulated titles nevertheless. Wilander, Chang come to mind in recent times.

This is a great rally, Gilles Simon returned most shot very close to Gael Monfils so Gael would go for power and use up more energy, Gilles Simon intention was to keep the rally going to wear out he's opponent, which clearly worked, game over
