Indeed, we are taking note of all the comments here, Tim. There's still a considerable journey ahead for Pulse. We greatly appreciate your efforts in creating such enlightening videos that make complex topics much more understandable.
Here's my letter in the suggestion box :) => Can we get the pulse ability in addition to Tableau desktop like -> can we use parameters instead of sticking to the current date only. => How to we row level security.
I love it! It's great that you brought a use case to explain how it works with real data, that's what I usually try to do when I need to explain something and for me, it's much easier to absorb the content. Great content as usual!
Thanks, great video as usual. Can you explain a bit about how these could be incorporated into a dashboard etc. Are you at all familiar with REACH REPORTING? Seems a tad similar to some of the metrics they present/use. Just wondering
Really nice video Tim (as usual) ! I really like the way you help us understand the new features and how you share your concerns / questions / surprises. It helps us confirm our feelings :) Keep going !
It's always a pleasure to watch your videos. It's helpful, calm. The explaination and examples are well thought out. thanks for your time and work here, tim.
This was a very good video. It helped me to get a good context with regards on how Tableau Pulse works, at least at a high level. Yes, it would be great to see how an end-user could interact with it. Also, not clear to me in general how Pulse provides the ability to create different chart types. Thanks for putting it together!
Been using it for the past week and my feedback is very similar. That back button thing is wild, I just want to go back to home! Many bugs, error codes. Definitely some need for maintenance and clean up. Folders, delete etc. Need for Only relevant values, wildcards. Pretty cool so far, a lot to be explored still
This new tool looks absolutely amazing, thank you for covering it! I am very new to tableau, and started a new position 6 months ago where tableau is going to be a lot of my focus. Have taken intro classes but otherwise still learning. One of my objectives in my role is to track a huge budget with daily transactions for a hospital, and I have to identify daily shifts in purchase trends, and also measure purchases against specific budget metrics set monthly. It sounds like with pulse, I can set these budget metrics. If I am able to pull specific budget limits tied to cost centers, will pulse allow me to set these up easily?
I would use advanced metric to track whether youre above or below the budget by creating a delta metric. Let tableau do the aggregation but offer the dimensions as ways to cut the budget up. Be sure to use the data model if the budget works at different levels to you raw actuals data.
Hi Tim, great video. What about metric that are not up to date? It will be very helpful if tableau will add the option to set relative to a specific date. For example: max date in my dataset.
Hello Tim, Thank you for this video. I am currently trying Tableau Pulse; however, I encountered the same error as you did when using the Advanced Analytics Editor. In your case, it seemed to work the first time, but failed on subsequent attempts. For me, unfortunately, it doesn’t work at all. Do you have any information about this error or possibly know of a workaround? Thank you in advance for your help!
Thanks a ton Tim, as usual great video with great content ! Quick question, apart from AI generated default questions for insights, i am unable to see a box to Ask Data where we can enter any open end question manually apart from defaulted questions and also enter/ask follow up questions to enter, which I saw in Pulse beta version... why it is missing here?
@@TableauTim Hello Tim, I tried to use running total in tableau cloud Advanced Definition section and its still not working . But in normal definition section, its working. Am I right? And if I want to do some calculations, then I have to do it in Advanced Definition right?
Thank you very much! I realy liked your video!! I am still trying to fully understand the big advantage of tableau pulse over dashboards I created so far. How would you summaries it in just 1-2 sentences? Is it just that the end user can change the views more easily (in a smart, ai-guided way)?
Great video! Can Tableau Pulse uncover insights across related metrics? For example, for e-commerce, revenue decreased as orders increased because AOV went down. (Since both order volume and AOV influence revenue, can you “teach” Tableau these relationships for more robust insight?)
No at the moment I’d hope this happens in the future. However explain data can unearth this correlation already so in theory if you build a pulse metric off a dashboard then you should be able to do this across experiences but not in Pulse
Is it true that when you create advance definitions, you cannot adjust to the different date options set up by tableau? like quarter to date, YTD etc. I am unable to modify the default month to date filter even though I have data for different years.
Great Video! is it fair to say the Metrics definition and metrics trend portion is an extension from Tableau Server/Tableau Cloud's Metrics feature. The real GenAI piece of addtion is the insights questions generated from the backend GenAI model?
yes i think i cover this duering the video. Pulse is a rebuild of metrics, the insghts are fed to gen AI to come up with the sentence summaries and the suggested insights messages but the raw insights are just math not Ai.
Many companies still have overnight batches that are updating their data platform and therefore no/few data from the current date. If there is no data i understand pulse now will give Null, which is unhandy, and in the other case that there are some entries it might think e.g. sales is going down. It also doesnt seem to handle seasonal/montly trends (creating a trendline towards zero, where it should know looking at historical data that towards the end the figures will go up, not down..
Have you found a way of deleting those related metrics in the end? Was surprised to see them save those down when exploring Pulse for the first time today. Feels like it will get messy quickly if there's no way to delete them or maybe an option to not store them to avoid having to manually clean it up every time.....
I have not seen a way to delete rogue metrics yet. I even opened a question in the tableau community. It's quite annoying right now. Especially in your example with the pulse videos the metric does include the five videos you selected. To add this very video here you have to adjust and tick it as well.... which creates a new metric. This will get messy fast. would be nice to get upvotes there :o)
Hi Tim. I can't seem to find any documentation on the update frequency for "Today's Pulse... Last updated" and what triggers the update. Mine currently says 21 hours ago. I have since updated the data source, but no change. Any ideas?
It monitors the extract refresh attached to the data source. I think it’s mentioned in the documentation I’ve linked to so in short it watches the refresh related to the data source and should queue and update. I believe it might do this a certain number of times but I’ll try and check the detail.
I began using Pulse today with my work and I found it to be just as much work as creating the same report by hand. Still had to clean my data and set filters, etc. in Pulse. I did not find it very useful.
I don’t think it’s advertised as saving time for developers. It’s going to enable everyone else who uses it though to slice and dice without having to come back to you so potentially scaling your efforts multiple time.
what's kinda misleading is the fact that it's defaulting to shorthand numbers really fast. It switches from 998, 999 to 1k up until 1099. You have no option at all to get the real number right now. Even the hover effect does never expose the real number. It does not matter as much on bigger numbers, but removing up to 10% of accuracy is kinda wild :D
Here's the guide I reference in the video: Link to docs: help.tableau.com/current/online/en-us/pulse_create_metrics.htm
Appreciate the effort in going into these videos Tim, thanks!

It was a bug at the time. Totals had a bug with the queries behind the scenes. It should now be fixed.

youve got it. you can empower users to create and track the things they care about. thats very different to a dashboard.
