Can't wait for a 1000km challenge with that!!
Minis are great! We had 2 in the 80's. Their only real problem is rust. These ev conversions are just fantastic. Please make more videos like this.
Best way to preserve old cars and still drive them without awful exhaust and breaking down every 100 km 👏
Super cute video. 👍My first car was a 1964 Austin Mini saloon, and so it's lovely to see a classic Mini BEV. The original ICE vans and pick-ups used to fly away from the lights when empty. In the UK there is Electric Classic Cars [type that title into RUclips] who make a classic Mini BEV conversion kit. It weighs just a tiny bit more than the original but provides upto 300bhp, and 165 miles of range, depending upon your desires and pocket depth. And the battery or components don't intrude into the car. The well finished vehicles are quiet and powerful, and practical daily drivers. And for those who love cute, they also do a BEV version of the original 1950-60s Fiat 500. Just as cute, just as practical.
Aww just had to pause to comment on such happy memories of the mini. You really knew you were driving in them, such fun, thanks for the memories and the sound that one is making is very reminiscent oddly. One of the ones that I drove had a sort of wire running the width of the door which you pulled on to open the door to get out! Smoking was good for you and seat belts were for wimps lol
The trick for steering is to use the throttle (as was) to help you steer. Coordinate the speed of movement with when you want to turn the wheel, if you try to power through the steering you'll ruin the tyres and knacker yourself lol! As you found out the Mini has a bigger turning circle than you think for its size....oh and the word you were looking for was a "transverse engine" to describe the sideways turned engine block.
Loved watching you experience the joys of proper mini driving, though I'm not sure it would be so enjoyable in today's traffic here in the UK.
I did not know they made a pickup truck version of the Mini back in the day. The EV conversion looks like it was done very well, and I bet it would be super fun to drive. Bjørn sure looks like he was enjoying it! 😀
I also loved the fact to see how many EVs are parking in this neighborhood. Seen a Kia E-Soul, several Teslas, Skoda Enyaq, Polestar.. nice!
This might be the first pickup I have seen that I actually like.
Loving the gear whine which is very reminiscent of the original Mini. The pick-up versions of these were very popular with hill farmers around where I grew up in North Wales, usually with Goodyear town and Country tyres on the front for traction on snowy / muddy roads. No good on a rutted track though. The van version of the mini very popular with shops for deliveries etc as doubled up as the family car.
Minis are great fun. My first car was a 1970 Mini K 1100, and it had a few engine tweaks (like polished ports), and was fun around curvy roads! Mine had a speedo that went up to 90 MPH (which it could get close to) but not at all advisable to do so as the brakes were not great for speeds > 60 MPH (the speed limit here anyway). It sort of had a heater (relied on ram air and barely worked at all). It was quite old, had some rust issues in the floor and so I probably spent more time working on it that driving it! Still fond memories of it though!
BTW you quickly get used to not having power steering and its probably good for you. Mine also didn't have synchromesh into first gear - so you could only put it into first while stopped or by doing a double the clutch (which I learnt to do).
Such a cool car. I also have a Think Classic from 2000 and an old 1980 Mini - I bought the Think with the thought that one day maybe I would do what this owner has done (as I saw his first video on RUclips some years ago). The problem for me though is my Think is the only UK survivor car still on the road so it would be a crime for me to kill it! So instead we are keeping both cars. I am a wheelchair user, so for both these old cars I use a hand control - meaning I have to steer them a lot of the time using one hand.... so you definitely have nothing to complain about with the manual steering!!
Love it! Imagine all the classics that could be transformed into EV’s and have a second life. So many sit not being used, they do need a lot of love to keep on the road but just look at the style and the fun factor!
I really appreciate that Bjørn is actually driving all these cars for us, unlike many armchair testers. Keep on the excellent work!
Such a cool little thing. I'd love an electrified MK1 Golf but guessing the price would be prohibitive.
Caspars masterpiece! Great to see it on the channel. Best gear-shifter ever designed!
Rwd could be fun, place some batteries in front to move the weight. But a nice "simple" conversion. :)
That was fun to watch. Also that's a beautiful neighborhood.
What a great video! I wish something like that could be legally done in Portugal...
I love it! What a beautiful conversion. Well done Bjorn. We have a new mini ev to go with our model Y. We love it. It would be so fun to have an original
Now you know how I feel in my Smart ED. ;-)
e-Up are really cool modules for testing the projects, not so much energy for range but lot of power.
Well executed project, hats off!
I had a mini 850cc as my first car. Electrifyied versions of these buggers must be awsome to drive.
love these conversions. and totally awsome car. sadly still so expensive and not really DIY yet. we need cheap light (to get better range) small batteries as well as some standard enmotors. and in general a bit more standardisation so one can eg combine batteries wherever they fit.
@7:30 the vacuum pump for the braking system, it needs this as ev doesnt create its own vacuum unlike ice vehicles.
The original Issigonis Austin/Morris mini was around 1958 - 60. Rubber blocks in compression for suspension. I think an 850cc engine. Main weakspot was the rear sub-chassis which rusted through fairly quickly, but only four bolts and the brake cables to release it! There was a Clubman version, too - really an estate with back doors and wood windowframes - which used to rot away! I'm not particularly tall, but I used to bang my head on the roof if it went over a bump too fast!
The estate / Stationwagon was also sold as the Countryman with real wood trim on the outside of the rear cabin and around the back doors.

This Mini fits in the back of that E-Tron behind 😂
I remember years ago, I’d been staying with a relative but was going home by bus. He gave me a lift to the station in his Mini Van. I think over the years, he had a Mini car, then Traveller, then van, then car. Just joining the motorway and there was a loud clunk, he stopped and we had a look underneath but couldn’t see anything. The van did another 8000mi+ (12,800km+) before the next MOT. Which it failed, as the loud clunk we’d heard that day, was the chassis snapping. Tough cars but I wouldn’t want to own one.
I think we need a 1000km winter drive in this - punishment for failing the MG5 drive!
BTW Minis won numerous Monte Carlo and other rallies in their day so they have a sporting heritage. I’m old enough to remember their launch and in the mid 1960’s my mother had one as the family runabout
Absolutely great. Thank you, Bjorn!
Loved this, Bjørn! By the way, BMW/Mini is doing modern conversions of the older car-they just started production in the UK. Call up your press rep!!!
I had an 80s Ford Range (4x4) with no power steering. I got use to it quickly..never really was an issue. I love the simplicity of these builds.
Trying to decide this or the Hummer EV.
20:00 Finally! A car that actually makes Bjorn look TALL ! 😂
There is a company in Newtown in Wales who have converted a classic Mini Cooper with a Small Tesla Drive Unit.
It does get down the road rather well.
Awesome car, with built in arm exercise 😀 If you want a car that no other have, this is it. I guess the owner have user a huge amount of time and brainstorming to do this conversion
"Back when smoking was healthy." Classic...
Bjørn. Where is the 1000km challange, where is acceleration test hum? Dissapointed!!!
Hehehe
Love it. I really do.
This Mini pickup can probably fit on the truckbed of a typical American pickup truck. 😂
Can't wait for 1000km challenge! 😂
It is AWESOME!
The joy of a real Mini 😁
give it fast charging, and it's a dream car. you should know that thieves can copy a key from a high-res image.
I like classic cars, but I don't care about owning or driving one 😄
I would be admiring things like this in a car show, but driving a modern car on my way there.
Hilarious Bjorn 😂🤣😂 .. what's the NCAP rating 😬. .. it's called a MinithinkEup
it sounds nearly like the BMW hanzsimmer
Without power steering it would be much easier to drive if, like the original Mini, the steering wheel was a bigger diameter.
1000km challange, and a week of camping to complete!
Love it! I wouldn't get an vintage car, without a plan to make it fully electric.
Some will argue that the engine is part of the experience.
Well, I want the visuals, not the noisy smelly fossil drive train.
A car is a good one if it makes you laugh like a maniac
Brilliant stuff.
Mera sånt här! 💪
1000 km challenge?
Can’t believe they made it centre-negative.
Most other parked cars in this video are EVs.
whaaat in the world? the engine looks like a bitcoin miner!! hahahaha :D
longitudinal - transverse however Mini gearbox/engine shared Oil and was a ****. The Fiat 128 separated the gearbox oil from engine oil and became the template for the modern transverse engine front drive vehicle
Now you are ready for DACIA Spring !!! Don't try to escape !!! 🤣
It’s a mini think pick-me-up.
Cute!
Y love that shit....! Love this guy 😆 🤣 😂
Do you know the software that runs on the phone?
Renault 5 EV would rock. Dual motor 4 wheel drive FTW :D Then maybe it could finally reach motorway speed! Renault 5 was the shit back then (not the good shit).
Awesome
"I'm going to stall the car." I'd like to see how.
It THINKs it is a MINI eUP.
Can you fit a Th!nk in the bed of an F150 Lightening?
no
"Ford F-150 SuperCrew bed size:
5.5-Foot Box:
67.1 inches long
50.6 inches wide
21.4 inches high"
"Length 3,143 mm (123.7 in)
Width 1,658 mm (65.3 in)
Height 1,596 mm (62.8 in)"
@@markifi it was 3×1.6m footprint, so according to what you put, you can
@@dxutube oh sorry i didn't label them. the first one is the truck bed, the second one is the size of the think. the 350 could fit it in i think, those are much larger, but that's a fossil
This one is sweeet ❤️👍
1000km Challange!!!😂
Nice but we are all waiting for the model Y rwd...
I'm also waiting for it to arrive in Norway...
@@bjornnyland They started delivering today in Italy, why you do not have a priority???
Best line: I'm a small Asian, I fit right in!
VERY FUNNY AND GOOD
poor fat e-tron, always making jokes of it.
Bjorn, it sounds like a electric motor...
You are spoilt by modern electric cars.
Convert older cars to be used as an EV would make sense. Why let older cars go to the waste and you have to buy a new one only for it to be electric. So retrofit would be nice as an option. It's a shame it depends on DIY, if it's readily available I can think of more cars which would make a good EV. Most cars only need like 120km of range anyway to get you from home to work on daily base. Retrofitted cars would fill that gap for an affordable price.
i agree! this solves so many problems at once.
Absolutely great. Thank you Bjorn!
