    For better or worse, I AM glad this is something Disney is doing with their own Star Wars Canon. Even Lucas himself has said he wasn't going to use the books for his vision of the Sequel Trilogy movies. I just wish Disney had a better foundation for building their Canon. No matter how good or bad I find all this extended Disney Canon lore in the books, comics, shows, etc, I can't get THAT hyped knowing it all leads to the dropped ball that is their Sequel Trilogy.

      The problem with movies and shows is that they need to be able to stand on their own. If you need to spend years developing secondary and expanded multimedia sources that the majority of the fandom with never bother with or maybe even know about to fix it’s issues, fill in the blanks and/or otherwise make it “BETTER”, then the show/movie/trilogy was crap to begin with.

    • @DMBLaan

      @eds1942 Agreed. That's why I think Disney should do with Star Wars what they're doing with Marvel. They can, if they chose to, keep developing the Legends Universe alongside, but still separate, from their Canon one. Like how the MCU is a separate canon to the Marvel Comics.

      I will never understand this sentiment among some individuals within this fandom - the material should strive to be original media, not a mere adaption of the EU. I understand there is a hypocrisy at play here - the originality criticism is applied to TFA (rightfully so to some extent), and yet paradoxically fans desire a live-action version and iteration of essentially every EU novel under the sun, however this series is supposed to explore an undefined era within the continuity with hopefully an intriguing narrative. The series is not a Luceno or Karpyshyn novel - folks should seriously stop imploring creatives to limit their horizons. Especially when fans constantly berate them for "constantly deriving from the EU" (rightfully so to some extent).

    • @lorewalkermaohao4602
      @lorewalkermaohao4602 7 месяцев назад +11

      Easy answer. Disney made a decision for a clean slate to clear up inconsistencies in the EU/Legends. It was also supported by the fact that GL himself ignored or forgot EU/Legends stuff even if he had previously greenlit said projects or worked on them personally.
      This meant they could make new stuff, shove it in wherever and then whenever wanted incorporate elements of Legends as references.
      This would've been fine if they actually had competent people making the new stuff.

      Probably cuz they never planned to use them to begin with . . . I mean think about it, if it would be just about content they could have use any of the "legends" part of Star Wars, yet the first thing they did was to make that part none cannon.
      The thing is, they used to try to make storys overlaping each other in a good and simple way. Keep up the interest with an intriguing good story that will keep people around and make em wish for more . . . sadly thats no longer the case rly, Disney have they own rules now and mindset to it.

    • @mdmn-ARCA
      @mdmn-ARCA 7 месяцев назад +1

      It's because they don't want to be making stories people already know, it's as simple as that. If they adapt a series of books into a three season show, summaries of the story will flood the internet before the first episode has even aired and everyone will know what happens and how it ends. That doesn't hook an audience nearly as well as if they're going in blind.
      They also want a level of control over the content they otherwise wouldn't have if they were just adapting stuff. If they start everything from scratch, they can't be perceived to be doing it "wrong" (although that doesn't stop them from being perceived to be doing it "badly").

Why they bother changing things from EU/Legends will always baffle me.
      I still think Disney messed up colossally by not starting with mostly faithful adaptation of Heir to the Empire as movie and trilogy, and building a more refined version of the existing timeline from there. The book had all the important elements to kickstart the EU post-ROTJ and set up characters like Thrawn, Mara Jade and the soon-to-be birth of the Solo Twins, added development to Luke and Leia, as well as perfectly setting up the future like the New Jedi Order and it made the New Republic feel valuable, still having to deal with the Imperial Remnant who still felt like a passive threat in the galaxy.
      Making a Thrawn movie trilogy would've meant their live action appearances would put them in the spotlight and made them household names by now. Disney's Canon is just watered down drivel with a 1/10 chance of a creator actually making something good.

    NJO _did_ have references across other stories as well; _Outbound Flight_ establishes the Chiss had already encountered the Vong shortly before the Clone Wars, and part of Palpatine's pitch to Thrawn was that only with the Empire could he hope to protect his people. _Rogue Planet_ is basically a stealth prequel to the arc, introducing both Verg and Zonama Sekot, both of which are integral to the NJO.

    100% true. I remember being pissed when Disney sacrificed all the old canon and called it Legends, because there was so, so much they could've drawn from to make a new version of canon. I loved that the NJO story moved on from Leia, Han, and Luke and brought in the Solo kids and the other new Jedi as well as the old characters. And you're right, Disney are more or less doing it right with the High Republic, and it's a shame they didn't think to do this with the old Legends material when they had the chance. And hell yes, they criminally underused Chuck Katarn.

    The one truly positive thing I can say about Acolyte is that I like how it feels like a martial arts movie. The first two episodes are painfully average and don't give me any reason to invest in the story or characters. The upcoming one is probably going to ruffle feathers if the rumors are true. What a great birthday present.
    I was originally planning on finishing the show but I guess we'll see how much of Leslye Headland's agenda made it through, up till now it's been pretty passive but it's there. Judging from the PR, it ramps up quite a bit. Doesn't help that whats her face main lead woman has been on record hating on white people, for what it's worth.
    I do like how the company is attempting to integrate this era into more mainstream media, since nobody gave a shit about the print media the High Republic comprises of.
    Wasn't Shadows of the Empire stuff literally directly before or during the release of the Special Edition movies?
    I could have sworn Kyle Katarn made at least a brief appearance in NJO. If not, ok fair point. My favorite Jedi from the period is Corran Horn, and he got a pretty good spotlight in NJO. I think that "I, Jedi" is probably my favorite book in the EU at large.

Now the High Republic hasn't exactly wowed me, so will have to see where that era goes story wise. I do like the "current" era and if the live action brings in the Chiss as an adversary after the excellent build up in the Thrawn movies that will be exciting. They are bringing some of the better EU stuff without being beholden to it all which I personally think is a good thing. The sequel era, well I don't hate it but I definitely don't love it. Some serious work needs to be done to actually build it up into it's own story (Resistance was an epic fail at that), not just the OT rehash we got in the movies. They are laying some ground work, but it needs a lot more actual universe building and not just 100's of hours to make "somehow Palpatine returned" less cringe.

    Lucas had a decade to use the New Jedi Order material, didn't use it and was NEVER going to. People need to stop complaining about Disney doing the same thing. Del Rey made conscious decisions that benefited written novels but hurt other media. In the very first New Jedi Order book they killed off Chewbacca because a character that grunts is hard to write for. The canon needed wiped and we need to let go of the past.
