1993 was the craziest year when talking about scoring. The top 10 were so good that there were not a single favorite among them. During the competition the top 10 positions kept fluctuating back and forth. Puerto Rico was on the 7th place during the second round of competition. It was the evening gown that placed her on the 4th position when the finalists were called.
I do notice that one or two contestants usually dominate the semifinals but in 1993 there was no clear favorite, even the Czech Republic and Finland was in the top 6 for a moment. I always thought Dayanara flew in under the radar. She really caught the judge’s attention during the top 6 question segment and she became their choice afterwards.
There were some very biased judges ...Alonso favored Colombia at a ridiculous level and butchered all others, Brazil in particular...Cuevas was all over the place...Daniels also hated Brazil but didnt have a clear favorite...
My same note but it's 1993 the aftermath of 80s big hair but watching back I wonder does she still have this dress? And forgot she wore yellow smart... Kenya did well here and her answer was great the politics in her Pageant were an issue

Venezuela answer was good. she stated it properly. It was translated properly Kenya Nailed this answer and what was great it was personalized, she stated it with elquence and honesty. This is why we twirl for her 26 yes later. Black Excellence Australia rocked....I wish ed she had a bigger spotlight.... Daynara Face the audience, loved the ending with the hand, and it was a good but not touching Kenya or Australia India was way too short, it told me nothing about her....I needed her to personalize this.... Casualmente Venezuela venía de salir del primer intento de golpe de Estado que hizo la entrega al escenario político del desgraciado de Hugo Chávez. En ese entonces ni lo logró y ella allí expresó que Venezuela no tenía otro camino que no fuera la democracia. Bravo por Milka y que ironías hoy en día. Después que esa peste llegó al poder y el país se dividió tanto, fue imposible que ninguna candidata pudiera responder correctamente, sin nervios otro tipo de pregunta de ese calibre.

Australia was absolutely hijacked of the crown. She was by far the best. Judges were hell bent on picking a Latina so top three was skinny little Puerto Rico and those two giant South American Amazons.
Back then the audience thought Miss Mexico didn´t make it to the top 10 due to Lupita Jone´s low scores (they have never had any evidence whether or not she scored Miss Mexico hi or low). They were booing Miss USA and so it happened USA got Lupita´s question!!
Australia and Colombia were the best! Australia was gorgeous and gave the best answer, but received a bad score from all Latinos in the jury. Puerto Rico was neither the most beautiful nor the smartest ... but she won the crown. Injustice !

Poor Miss India, you can tell by the look on her face that she knew she blew it. Even Dick Clark's reaction is evident. She just wanted to disappear after that response. Miss Venezuela's answer sounded a little too rehearsed, as if she'd given that speech a hundred times before. Miss USA nailed the question and deserved a lot better ranking than she got. Same for Miss Austrailia. Miss Puerto Rico also gave a detailed answer though she was a bit excitable. I like Miss Colombia but her answer was mediocre but she put it over with her personality.
Miss Puerto Rico's self effacing reaction when she ran out of time for her answer endeared her to the judges and that is when I think the judges started to take notice of her, as all through the night she kind of flew in under the radar and then came out swinging toward the end when it really counted.

I believe she was referring to her closure comment of “estoy muy orgullosa de representarlo” which the translator didn’t end with , but watching this he did said at the beginning “I’m very proud of my country” but overall he messed up her answer that’s why she nodded her head when all was done cause she probably thought that was it and her surprise reaction when she got to the top 3
