Fun Fact: the Atrociraptors where originally going to be called Deinonychus but the name was changed during production, which Deinonychus would’ve been better since Velociraptor, Atrociraptor, and possibly Pyroraptor were based on Deinonychus
I'm glad they changed the name to Atrociraptor. It would just add further confusion to what the "Velociraptors" actually are. They're Deinonychus in the JP trilogy, albeit with a different name thanks to Gregory Paul. Then Jurassic World retcons this when Hoskins says "nature gave us the perfect killing machines, 75 million years ago", which is when real Velociraptors were alive. The Deinonychus/Atrociraptor is the one time where a last minute name change actually helped, unlike the Pachyrhinosaurus/Sinoceratops.
Both Deinonychus/Atrociraptor and Pachyrhinosaurus/Sinoceratops name change was a last second change to both Fallen Kingdom and Dominion, also the Moros Intrepidus was originally supposed to be the Microraptor
"Most of paleontology is just figuring out how things are built different." I'll have to remember that one :'D I came from watching James talk about ARK dinosaurs last week or so (one of my favorite games), and I'm excited to see what y'all do in the future! It's so nice to see all of your different views, from a paleontology standpoint but also an understanding of character design for game/movies. You've made sure it's not 100% about nitpicking what's wrong, but also pointing out what's right, and what might not technically be accurate but looks good, and what makes it consumable from a viewer/player standpoint--like when you said that the legs on the raptor are elongated and while technically not accurate, it drives home the "this animal in particular is fast" point to those watching it. You've got it all, and it's really refreshing :) Thanks for the video!
This is first video I’ve seen from y’all and I was highly entertained. As a kid I wanted so desperately to be a paleontologist but life had other plans lol You all did a fantastic job of making this fun, interesting, and entertaining! Keep doing this! Imma go subscribe now lol
Interesting that Dromaeosaurs, which their name translates to "running lizards" didn't run very often. Also, yes, the Moros was accidentally and also purposely made to be small. You see originally Microraptor was going to be in Dominion, but then Colin Trevorrow I guess looked on the internet and saw that one image of Moros depicting it on a log and maybe interpreted it as it is standing on a branch when it's actually standing on a log. Even the paleo advisor they had for the film was surprised by how small it was in the film. So basically Moros was added because they wanted to switch out Microraptor.
That's a shame, microraptor is such a unique dinosaur, I would have loved to see it. Tbh O wasn't familiar with Moro's so I didn't know it was bigger in real life.
The detail we mention about dromaeosaurs not being runners isn't necessarily that they didn't run frequently, but more that they aren't built to be specifically fast running animals unlike some dinosaurs like ostriches and ornithomimosaurs. They could certainly run quickly when they wanted to over relatively short distances.
At 27:30 I thought "the line" was gonna be the vine where the kid says "look at all those chickens". Color me surprised when I quickly, QUICKLY realized that was not in fact the line
If you have seen the Netflix tv show, Camp Cretaceous, you would know that Toro, the Carnotaurus, gets scarred on the left side of his face. There have been many theories about toro being in Fallen Kingdom or Dominion, but when I saw the new Carno skin, I realized that it was Toro. Great video, I wish I was a paleontologist, but I don’t know if I will be because of the how much I’d get paid.
There is a species viewer menu point in the menu where you can look at any creature, change their skins, manipulate with lightning and you can look at their animations too.
@ObservingEye its just wierd that the fricking pyroraptor started swimming even tho it could have easily caught up to owen normally and the movie wantet it to be scary but it was just silly
Dr Wu has always had his hands in pretty much every dinosaur that has been made, so James' point on "they should feel like they're from the same universe but they don't" is valid. However, I'll posit that he also worked for multiple different companies, each with, potentially, their own influences. InGen has it's look, that's the classic Jurassic Park design feel. Then you've got the Jurassic World era, where Wu and InGen sorta created the drab, boring designs that Masrani's company wanted for the park, the look that most people expect, those swamp-trudging creatures. And then you've got the BioSyn crearures which have feathers and an attempt at some paleo-accurate reconstructions, some more successful than others. Of course, aside from all that you've got the crocodillian designs on a lot of the carnivores. It's a mishmash in some areas, but you can peel away the layers and divide them based on the factions that were cloning the animals. TLDR: Different companies had their own asthetics.
The Masrani era dinosaurs are also from a time when Wu was given complete control over genetics without anyone to control him or talk with him. Sort of like the prequel trilogy of star wars where George lucas was given complete control over his own vision without any checks and balances and the end result is a mess. An example being the Baryonyx which has two different designs. One was probably the Isla Sorna variant that probably died out causing Masroni to ask Wu to re-recreate the Baryonyx genome and he does it whilst trying out new techniques that he thinks will better suit the animal and the end result is a dinosaur with most of dna being crocodilian which causes it to lose its distinctive traits. Ironically just like in the book he ended up creating the type of dinosaurs that the book Wu wanted because they could be more profitable and easy to manage(they weren't).
The designs for Jurassic World, especially the ones in the giant park, are very.. meta. They aren't designed to look like what dinosaurs would look like. They are designed to look like what a company _thinks_ people _think_ dinosaurs look like. And out come, not these bright and beautiful dinosaurs, but the bland and colorless, thundering lizards. It's all about expectations, and the Jurassic Park novel explains this mentality very very well.
The Dominion prologue takes place during the Cretaceous, and all the species we see there (besides the T. rex) are identical to the ones we see in Jurassic World. So InGen wasn’t making ‘designer’ dinosaurs (or at least not exclusively), considering they made several ‘real’ ones too.
Hey, I’ve always wanted to be a paleontologist, and I’m 14 now and still like dinosaurs, but I’ve started to think about how interesting it would really be. I’d like to know if you spend more time researching inside, and how often paleontologists actually go out to dig, or do you just hire a team? I was actually able to find a fish fossil in a rock once, but I lost it a bunch of years ago.
The amount of time spent actually digging stuff up is different from person to person, depending on their specific job & area of research. Personally, I tend to only go out digging once a year, & it's totally irrelevant to my own research/just for fun, but some lab groups go out for months at a time & then spend the rest of the year preparing and describing what they found.
