Bought one and I’m impressed. My favourite mic before this one was the NTG3. But I find this one even better. Thanks again for putting the voice sample out here on RUclips👍
The WA-84 is actually based on the Neumann KM-84; not the 184. The key difference being that the KM-184 is a transformerless microphone whereas it's predecessor, the KM-84, used an output transformer in the amplifier design - as does the WA-84. Both the KM-184 and the WA-84 are derivative of the KM-84; a pre-Sennheiser Neumann microphone that hasn't been sold since the early 90s. Most people familiar with the KM-84 do not view the KM-184 as an improvement however. It's said that the output transformer offered pleasing harmonic distortion that KM-184 lacks.
This is easy to sort out. Fethead Fantom or Broadcast, or any damn preamp with good transformers (Neve, API, even Warm Audio's own) in will bring back those harmonics
It's a lovely instrument mic, if positioned well and its upper end respected. That said, on your voice segment it's very clear it has a hot spot, not unlike many super-cardioid boom/shotgun mics, about 3-6'' wide out 1' starting around 6k. There is a noticeable whistle coming from every p, s and t you speak that graduates when you move your head even 1'' to either side. The 414 has no such issue. Me, personally, I wouldn't listen to anything you said into the WA-84 for more than 5 seconds without reaching for an eq. As an overhead, I would be concerned with ringing from the 6k-12k range, not so much transient issues but larger cymbals that have a tendency to wash out but leave some random 6k-12k pitch washing around. On guitar, prepare for finger slide scrapes. Piano, once it's set I imagine it would be fine. All in all, I couldn't trust it and wouldn't trust it because I don't like caveats, having to remember ''Oh, it has that extra sensitivity at _____ at exactly ____ degrees at ____ distance''. That's a headache.
Good too see reviews about this mic. Recreation of the KM84, oh and just wanting to add, there are a lot of artists that used small diafragm mic for voice, small mics are better then ldc because when smaller they are faster. But people like to the slower membranes for voice more, but it does not mean it is not good to use it for voice.
The original 84's Alan Parsons' favourite mic for recording a Hammond+Leslie speaker. He used two of those to record Richard Wright's Hammond organ with for Dark Side Of The Moon. One on top of the Leslie and one at the bottom. :) I believe he still uses that method today, so no two KM-84's on top, just one. ;)
Fantastic sounding mic. Great on voice, great on overheads, great on acoustic guitar. Would probably also be good slightly further back, for singer playing guitar at the same time. Could be useful on guitar or bass cab. And probably on snare top, maybe with a pad, strapped alongside an SM57. Might be interesting on toms, bleed might sound decent.
Many thanks, I’ve not tried the 8000 but I have to imagine it’ll be a little more versatile for those applications. One that I have tried is the wa-47 (reviewed recently on this channel) and I absolutely love it 👍🏻
Thank you sir… love your videos and style…. The made in “China” is not ideal for me but there can be exceptions for sure. That mic sounds great. Blessings
Ah, I'm in a pickle. Can't decide between NGT 3 (350 $ - used), Oktava mk012 (350$), Beyerdynamic MC930 (470$) and WA-84 (380$) for streaming/online lessons. My setting is untreated room with dogs barking outside the house. I would work in front of my PC. Do you have any suggestions?
@@nikolawesthemkg worth considering the Line Audio CM4 too, only about $130 and I like it better for that role than the Oktava. At the upper end, there's also Soyuz 011, at similar price to the Beyer MC930. And in the middle, cheaper than the Beyer is the Shure KSM141. I think I prefer to the Oktava, but not the Beyer.
Thanks for your advice the video was very helpful and like the fact that this condenser Mic could be Used for singing in my Matt Monro Tribute show .as in my Obser. Vation Matt Monro used small condenser. Microphone in different showcase small Compact microphone But? With a lot of sound coming from it all I can do is simply give it a Try And here and see the results hopefully it will do the job.As I've been looking for a very small. similar. Microphone 🎤 to what he used not all the time but he must have like a small compact condenser 🎤 Microphone its sounds Exactly what I am looking for With some upgrades as well And still looking old and vintage I will let you know when I have tried it out for a Vocal microphone Singing Matt Monro classic songs be interesting to see what it looks and sounds like
I dont think Warm Audio mics sound anything like the originals they're based on. However they sound good, and thats the criteria ANYONE should be listening to, not the originals. People get too hung up on the irrelevant stuff and forget to craft their sound.
Enjoy guys, it’s so good 😄

Great video bro!
Between wa-84 and wa 8000, what micro do you think that is better for guitar, and voice?
:)
