This man has inspired me in a way I can’t write down. The love, passion and dedication he has put on his films is remarkable. The romanticism on them. The struggle, illusion and pursuit of dreams, the beautiful music by hurwitz, and themes of constant dedication, such as an artist, a young in love, or an astronaut, have touched me deeply. I normally don’t leave the psychological thriller genre, and this man is the exception. Im actually gonna work in order to sabe some bucks and have a chance to travel to LA. Really. Pure inspiration.
I think Damien Chazelle has really found his voice with his latest First Man (what an Oscar snub) in the sense that it fully embodies all the major themes of his three previous films and takes it to the next level. I can see him tackling great stories of other historical figures in a similar manner, and I hope he won't restrict himself to just Jazz. What do you guys think? -Thomas
The editing in this video was outstanding. Also the parallels with the voiceovers were amazing. Whiplash and La La Land were two of my fav films, so this was a great watch.
... and at only at 34. It's great to see a director wholeheartedly devoted to his niche in cinema. You can tell Chazelle had a lot of fun with the sound design in First Man (mixing animal and nature sounds into the score). Here's to more from a talented and young director. Another great video!
Jordan Peele and Damien Chazelle imo are two of the best modern film makers of all time. They just came out of the gate swinging and although First Man didn't make that much money it still was a master class in story telling and film making. I'm so excited to see Us this week and for Chazelle's next movie!
I still definitely need to see First Man, Whiplash and La La Land are some of my favorite films from recent years and I have no doubts that First Man can stand tall among them. I'm really excited to see what he does next, such an exciting filmmaker that has already demonstrated a lot of range, and I think we can expect great things from him. Excellent video, excellent series, maybe next up you could do Lynch?
To say I am inspired by this amazingly well-made video compiling Chazelle's thoughts, would be an understatement. The points he (and you) make are profound and this has been a memorable night listening to such an insightful voice. This video has impacted me definitely! Thanks, Thomas!
What a masterpiece of a video. I am an aspiring director and I am currently shooting a music video. I have watched all of Damien's works bar First Man, and the way you explained his views and how his characters went on a journey was insightful and inspiring. Thank you for such a great video and I look forward to the next one. Kyle.
No director is quite like Damien in my opinion. His dedication and love for filmmaking is sort of unmatched and it translates to such a passion in his movies. A real legend
After watching each of these movies, I never initially drew the parallel that they were all somewhat similar in how the tories were tackled. I love Damien Chazelle's work and this video bring his work into a whole new light I never thought about before. Very good!
The editing on this video is so good! This was so much fun to watch as a really big fan of Damien Chazelle’s filmmaking. Especially the part where he speaks about before the devil knows you’re dead! Wow! Thanks for this!
Cool, Chazelle mentioned Before The Devil Knows You're Dead, such an underrated movie, the final masterpiece by Sidney Lumet, among Hoffman's and Hawke's (and Finney's and Tomei's) finest performances.
@@SansDream6810 Because it didn't show the American Flag being planted on the moon. It only briefly showed Neil and Buzz digging the hole for the flag and showed the flag in two quick shots from far away. Also Ryan Gosling said something to the effect: "I'm a Canadian, so I don't think that it was just an American accomplishment,. I think it was an accomplishment for humanity." The conservative media went crazy with that, as you can imagine. Also the Liberals boycotted it because the title was called "First Man" and it was released during the Brett Kavanaugh hearings (that was an actual review on Rotten Tomatoes. NOT JOKING). They didn't feel it was appropriate to tell the story a straight white men doing something good in history......what a world we live in, huh?

I agree! He’s been improving with each film, building on the foundations of the previous
Yeah i hope he keeps challenging himself and pushing the boundaries
actually I prefer the jazz, but I'll watch (and most likely enjoy) everything he does in the future
Love Damien Chazelle. But I'm just here to say the effort you put into editing this video is unbelievable!
The editing in this video was outstanding. Also the parallels with the voiceovers were amazing. Whiplash and La La Land were two of my fav films, so this was a great watch.
After watching this video i can confidently say that Chazelle is my favourite director at the moment - great video essay!

I like seeing video essays on Chazelle himself, they tend to be focused on a particular film, but it’s great to get an overview of his technique.

Go watch it dude! Thanks as always. I don't know about Lynch though, perhaps a but too trippy for my tastes...
wooo boyyy those edits at 2:11 are gorgeous good shit
"narrative is a means to an end" words of wisdom right there

Thanks so much Kyle! Now go watch First Man!

Loved your cut of his whip-pans from all three films into one sequence!
2:11 that editing though
2:11-2:20. Nailed it 🙌

Thanks Smita, I appreciate that. It was a lot of work, but well worth it in the end!
Now that's just inspirational
Do How Steve McQueen Tells a Story next.
Cool, Chazelle mentioned Before The Devil Knows You're Dead, such an underrated movie, the final masterpiece by Sidney Lumet, among Hoffman's and Hawke's (and Finney's and Tomei's) finest performances.
This video essay is a work of art
Keep up the good work guys! Love your videos from New Zealand! 🇳🇿 ❤
I just found this video after I wrote a script for a video essay with nearly the exact same premise. Fantastic lmao
I did like it before I even saw it, quality as always. Thank you
The best part is all his 3 movies ends with character staring at each other :)
Chazelle is a great filmmaker. Can't wait to see what he comes up with next.
no video can describe Chazelle's film-making as this one, great job!
Thank you storytellers ❤
Thank you for this video and especially thank you for uploading in 21:9!
My pleasure!
This video was fascinating! And the editing here is masterful. Better than Bohemian Rhapsody's editing at least
Love your channel. Would be great if you did a video on Yorgos Lanthimos
This is probably your best work to date! Love this!!!!! Thank you :) :)
This gave me goosebumps
Paul Thomas Anderson next 🤞
hmmmmmmmmmm
There is nothing better than good movies
He's a young warrior!
solid editing bro !
First Man is one of the biggest oscar snubs ever
Love your vids, keep it up.
Basically, Chazelle would be really good at making superhero movies.
Man could you imagine. Finally showing the real cost of being a superhero
@@rawtaa8591 If there was ever going to be an R rated Venom origin, I'd want Chazelle writing/directing it.
Whiplash is one the BEST movies made !
It would be great if you could make a video on Luis buniel and surrealism
Hope you do Sam Mendes in this series. Aside from American Beauty and Skyfall, his filmography is grossly under appreciated.
Love your content!
People were seriously missing out by "boycotting" 'First Man.' 😝
One of the dumbest boycotts in recent memory
Why was it boycotted?

Fucking hate liberal and conservatives.
You guys should do training day!!
La La Land - Best film of all time
*do more of these plsss*
Great video!
Does anyone know where I can find the interviews with Chazelle that are used in this video?
Nicely edited and Chazelle’s quotes are great, but I'm not sure you answered 'How Damian Chazelle tells a Story'.
Alternative title ideas are always welcome!
Step 1: Jazz
good job
Please do "how alfonso cuaron tells a story"
I already did haha
Director god
THE NON ENGLISH GUY WHO TALKS IN THESE IS MUCH MUCH MUCH BETTER!
First man was criminally overlooked for the "diversity awards" A.K.A" Oscars". Fantastic film.
invite me for your future film
Do Christopher Nolan please
I will
Jesus loves you guys, let me know if you have any questions about God
