How do you keep your machine from eating the material with the small seams?

You know how she reaches around and holds the tails of the thread when starting out? That's what stops the fabric from going down the needle throat. At least that's what works for me.
It's a gentle pull as it goes through

My machines have never given me trouble with them, but there are a few things you can do to help!
First is always making sure you're using a good needle. If it's starting to get dull, or it's not the right kind of needle for the fabric, it's more likely to have problems.
Many machines come with optional throat plates that have a smaller space for the needle to pass through. Some are even just a single hole that only works with a straight stitch, but the smaller the space, the less likely it is things will get stuck there.
As Grimnirnacht said, getting your material started by gently pulling the thread tails helps prevent the leading edge from getting caught. I do this out of precaution, but it's not usually necessary on my machines.
Getting a "running start" can also help - putting your material farther back and then feeding it in under the foot after the needle is already up to speed. The faster the machine is going, the less likely it is to suck in the material.
And of course, if all else fails, lightweight tissue paper or tearaway stabilizer is a miracle worker! You can put it underneath your fabric while you sew and just rip it off the back when done. It makes a huge difference for particularly stubborn machines.
      Hope that helps!

what is the name of the material you sewed on to the fabric of the shirt that can be used to lace up the shirt. I know you said it but I must have rewinded it back because I didn't understand what you said.

Did it take long to make that shirt? I'm easily distracted, so my projects take ages to complete.

It took me about an hour. This was actually my first time constructing it, so I had to make decisions along the way. I think a second one would go faster.
