If the price for this box is sub $100, this is going to be a huge winner for Kill Team. Space Marines are easy to paint, and so are the Death Guard, so it will be a really strong jumping-on point for people looking to get into it.
Absolutely. The fact that GW haven't pushed the Titus vs Tyranids more is kind of strange. A Kill Team starter set with Titus and some buddies (even if it's just him replacing one of the models from this upcoming set) versus a box of Tyranid Warriors + Gaunts would be a pretty good tie-in for Space Marine 2. Would definitely be a good on-ramp for people who know about 40K from the game.
@@Nemoknowsnothing I disagree. THIS starter set being advertised isn't bespoke to Kill Team. It's literally a bunch of sprues for individual models previously sold as blind box product. GW had no problem repurposing these sprues as a Kill Team. It wouldn't be difficult for them to repackage a selection of existing Tyranid infantry sprues, for use as a combined Kill Team. A Hormagaunt sprue here (5 models per sprue), a couple Termagant sprues there. Or maybe a copy of the Tyranid Warriors sprues. There's a lot of options GW has for cobbling together a functional Kill Team, using only what they already produce in abundance.
GW doing mdf terrain is kind of huge. I wonder if this set will be sort of a market test to check the popularity of that terrain, and if it could mean a big variety of "starter" terrain sets in mdf from GW in the future. A "half table" box of official Games Workshop themed mdf terrain priced at $60-80(still less than a lot of kits from other companies) could be a big seller.
New WH 40k fan here. This is perfect, not only will this give me an in how to play the game, it also has plague marines, painting them is what got me interested in the first place. That and the lore.
The current Starter for Kill Team is a 10 vs 10 box with plastic terrain for £65-67.50 ... let's see how GW price this starter that costs EVEN LESS to make give it has MDF terrain.
Tbf the last starter box you still had to go buy terrain and the mat was rubbish, and you had to go buy the teams rules. At least this is a full board of terrain, a proper mat and the rules are free. Plus Elite teams are a good way for new people to start
MDF terrain and tokens with full colour printed front has become really popular in the UK over the past few years. Worth looking into if you've not seen it before.
If it's not just traditional pressed cardboard terrain then is probably UV printed since you can print with UV on almost any surface, and then they cut the boards with the -CNC machine- Laser cutter. IMO the price will be the do or die for the box
Im a complete newbie and Ive been considering to get hivestorm and now I see this and its perfect. I want to build someday some angels of death and legionaries but I want to play with a friend first of all
I’m picking this up, not just for the previously rare models but because I could paint them for my bringers of judgement kill team and the start of my death guard army
I just got into the hobby thanks to the Warhammer Heroes blind boxes. I was bummed when my store stopped getting more of these in but am happy to see that I will be able to get more through this starter pack.
Did a double take jumping back between my home page and subscriptions, trying to figure out why this new Dana Howl video wasn’t showing up… until I finally read the channel name.
I've been off-and-on chasing the Death Guard Heroes for ages, I really hope the MDF terrain makes the price feel good enough for me to go for it doubly so if that handbook is legit!
Picking up the box for the SM Heroes models. I collected only Series 2 before, and shipping from Japan was not cheap at all. So I did not collect others. Getting Series 3 and 4 for cheaper that series 2 turned out to be with shipping is very nice! I will donate terrain to local gaming group tho. I do not like the way mdf smells, so do not want it in my home. But I realize it is a very 'me' problem.
As someone who absolutely loathes painting terrain, this is an absolutely brilliant call by GW. I wasn't really interested in a new Kill Team box as I already have everything I need and want but, as soon as I heard about the MDF terrain, I decided to support the product and pre-ordered it. I really, really hope that they stick with MDF going forward.
Of course, the box will be considerably more expensive, not only because of the coveted models (yeah, Space Marines at last), but above all because of the "super exclusive high-quality printed terrain parts made from renewable raw materials"...
I just hope these are also normal Killteams even though they have 7 models. The Warcry starter set used recycled underworlds sets but was half the size of regular games
As someone who already has those DG models all I want are the rules for them. The sad part is my wife just spent a bunch of money on Space Marine boxes to get the Justian model types she needed for her Angels of Death list
That Malignant Plaguecaster is the only Death Guard model I don't have, and it will finally be mine!!! Also excited for extras of the rest of the DG heroes and the SM heroes as well. Overall its a pretty exciting box. It looks like they are really trying to lower the barrier to entry, and I hope this is a sign of things to come at GW. One thing I noticed that you didn't mention that is in the article is that they said "the full rules used in regular Kill Team games will be available for download from the Warhammer Community website." I really hope this ends up being actually the case. So much mixed messaging between the different GW games right now on what will be available online and what is paywalled.
The terrain thing is a bit weird. I would bet the MDF actually cost them more to make than the exact same terrain in plastic would have. It's the molds that are expensive, but they already exist for the Ryza Ruins that the MDF is a copy of. On the other had the terrain sprues would make the box much bulkier, costing more money for freight, so it might still math out in their favor. They might have also gone with MDF to avoid tying up the factory. The starter is going to be a lower margin set than nearly anything else they could have the factory making. With their constant production issues the MDF might just have been a way to keep their plastic partner in China busy making something more profitable.
Do you know what the full rulebook adds that's not in the lite rules PDF? Standard equipment rules maybe? Wondering if you'll have to also buy the full rulebook to really get into the game... 🤔 MDF terrain is a neat direction.
Not that unexpected, because there was an image showing the Death Guard in the Angels of Death rules, released two weeks ago. It was only a matter of time.
This looks really cool. I love those models and this may actually get me to try Kill Team. I would need to buy some standard SM heads, as I cannot gwt past the idea of being encased in a walking tank but leaving your head exposed! 😅 (Doesn't bother me with Dea5h Guard since they're basically dead already)
I agree with everything you said, and I'm excited by this release. Almost as much as the when they announced the new Kill Team with co-op rules. This is an unexpected stride forward by Games Workshop in so many ways.
Reissue of minis that took up space in GW stores and Surugaya not selling for a couple years and were only cleared off the GW shelves last year, along with terrain that doesn't have any vantage points (and presumably no rules for vantage points in the book). Meh. I'd be a lot more positive if the terrain had a couple vantage points.
not sad about plastic terrain at all, costs too much and it inflates the price of the box. I don't want or need any terrain so this is as close to as good as it gets.
I’m super excited to pick this up as I’ve been wanting to get into kill team and it has my two favorite factions! Was a release date given for this box?
I think these comments show that this isn't going to do much as a starter set because it's going to be monopolised by people going for the Heroes models.
Whatever the EFF THAT boxed set is! GW actually makes worthy plastic terrain and...now they want to give up on that? Okay, then, I can assure them I'm not buying any boxed sets with mdf in them. Also dropping this boxed set so soon? It doesn't matter, the new KT was DOA. Long live the last ed, because, I think someone didn't get the message that it sold because it was actually good, while who knows even what this is?
Im wondering how this will do against Mantic's Halo game. Seems to be at least somewhat equivalent. Warsenal males preprinted MDF terrain. Could they be making the terrain for the set? Does GW use an outside vendor to manufactur stuff other than print material?
This seems like such an easy win for them to make this super cheap and sell like crazy that surely, surely they're going to make this at least $150 right?
@@howlhammer That's not too bad I suppose, in line with the smaller WarCry starter sets at least (more MDF terrain is probably better for new folks than one larger plastic terrain). With existing sculpts and (presumably) lower cost terrain it would have been interesting to see them go even a bit lower though and compete in the skirmish style board game space.
it is strange for me that they have such problems to make terrain cheap with plastic, they all ready produce plastic minitaures so terrain shouldnt be such a big difference. It seems more a problem in design and interest.
The MDF terrain is a very smart move. I enjoy painting terrain, but most people hate it and just want to start playing without worrying about painting buildings.

Yep. It's like the old school terrain, except more durable. A nice halfway house between the cardstock terrain and modern plastics.
weirdly enough I find the printed detail looks really good with painted minis next to it. I imagine this will be waaaayyy easier to transport as well.
