Very Cool Steve i have run Yamaha apex engines in snowmobiles for a few years and you are using the correct type and make of engine. They are some of the most dependable engines on the market. I'm not a pilot but do enjoy seeing videos on flying. Fly on Steve be safe
Hi Steve and Sarah, Enjoy the build, mad scientists at work lol. Congratulations on a great season. I'll look forward to you dethroning Toby. Take care, Be safe
Steve, some advice. The next evolution to STOL drags is electric. You have short flights. (You trailer your plane everywhere anyway) want to stop fast? Reverse the motor. Want torque to spin a huge paddle prop? Instant torque. Mark my words, that is the next progression in this "sport"
Can't wait to see the new build. Are you going to be a dealer for the new engine and are you going to be building and selling motor mounts firewall forward etc?
Steve, you have us all excited, especially since Scrappy is done. Why do you choose Highlanders over SuperSTOL’s? Since you use a slatted wing, is it basically the same wing as the SS? We look forward to your build series!
I know you're a dealer for Just Aircraft but there's no telling how many of those planes you've sold that you didn't sell. Same for Edge Performance engines. I'd love to see you reap all of the reward on a sidewinder setup.
What is the weight if you know?? I’m still stuck on the Viking Mitsubishi engine 160lbs at 90hp. I bought a 701 kit instead of a 750 and I’m so limited on engines. What is your opinion on putting the Honda engine? 220lbs 130hp
There is a great Facebook chat group "Yamaha aircraft conversions". Lots of info. I believe that the Yamaha 4 cylinder is about ~180lbs with the 3 cylinder being about 10-15 less. Again it's not so cut and dry, when weighing these engines as the weight is dependent on whatever accessories you include in the weight assessment. To me it sounds like these engines are about 10 or 20 pounds heavier than the rotax 912.
@@SteveHenry coming from anybody but you or maybe Patey that would be surprising. We'll get you what you need whether plastic or metal just let me know.
I don’t expect it to be really any better or worse than other engines. Seems like it pretty much takes a given amount of fuel to make a given amount of power. I know some engines are more efficient than others but will just have to wait and see what it gets.
I much prefer Taildragger airplanes for the way I like to fly and the places I like to go. I haven’t seen any nose wheel airplane that can stop as short as I stop in my Highlander!
Yes, it is a snowmobile engine. It's using a different gearbox than the apex. Mounting is different and also a different gear ratio due to different power curves of the engine. The "nytro" sled engines are the non turbo version of this engine.
Looking great Steve! Can’t wait to see this baby in action.
you and sara are getting better with every piece. thx
Thanks 😊
Makes me want to build a Highlander!
Great video Steve! Hopeful you have time to video the fabric install, would like to see how it compares to traditional fabric. See you soon
Hi John, yes hopefully we will be at the same event sometime soon!
I will definitely have questions about dihedral and washout when I start building my wings. I will see you after Christmas to pick up my wing kit sir.
I look forward to watching the build, thanks for sharing.
Looking forward to the build! Thanks
Thanks for watching! -Sara
Fantastic. I too am looking forward to some build videos.
Good luck Steve! Lovin it💪🏼 all the way from Holland 🇱🇺
Thank you!

Looking forward to hopefully getting to watch this build. 😀
Happy building my friend!
Can’t wait to watch it go together

Sweet ! I've been wanting to watch someone build a highlander .
Awesome Steve! So excited to watch this build series! Love the lower RPM of the sidewinder engine.
My Edge Performance EPeX engines have just been awesome but I am excited to see how I like the sidewinder too!
Hi Steve and Sarah,
Enjoy the build, mad scientists at work lol.
Congratulations on a great season.

Haha! That "First Flight" was a very controlled flight!
All my flights are very controlled!😅
Awesome looking forward to more build videos!

So exciting! -Sara
We are waiting very excited. ☺️ 👏👏👏
Thanks for your support
Awesome!! I'm super excited!! Can't wait to see this build. New engine!!! wow...
Looking forward to seeing your bird fly.
Excellent video and great looking shop.

I can’t tell you guys how excited I am to watch this build!!! The competitive spirit is alive in y’all!!!!
Can't wait to see the build and follow the series with the outcome in the flying competition.
Thank you for watching!
Ooooooh! This is going to be fun.
Great video STEVE! Keep’em coming. Are you going to film some added instructions for the parts of the manual that are a little vague?
Modern day aviation pioneer! happy holidays to WWA and the Henry family!
You are the master!

Yes I agree with you, but I don’t think we’re there just quite yet.

Yee-hawww, I sure hope you share more build videos. I miss seeing your gallery of build pictures on the website since it was updated.
We have started a new “Build Photos” page on the website that we will be updating. Thanks for watching! -Sara
Dead on that assessment of the Yamaha engine for a bc stol…..although a Polaris turbo 850 would be interesting too! #powertoweight
Steve, you have us all excited, especially since Scrappy is done.
Why do you choose Highlanders over SuperSTOL’s?
Since you use a slatted wing, is it basically the same wing as the SS?

I just like the Highlander better. No it’s not the same wing even with slats.
I know you're a dealer for Just Aircraft but there's no telling how many of those planes you've sold that you didn't sell. Same for Edge Performance engines. I'd love to see you reap all of the reward on a sidewinder setup.
Sweet My Dream plane would be the super stol.
Awesome dream plane -Sara
Crane lifts crate -- FIRST FLIGHT ! Funny!
Interested in seeing what you do about the water pump... I really want to put the nytro engine in my build but the water pump concerns worry me.

Hey Steve why not build a turbo prop version. Get a jet engine off a Mosquito something like that. Much lighter and get you some beta. That'll do it!
That’s beyond our budget. Just the engine would cost several times as much as this whole plane will be. But it would be really cool!
Awesome! I subbed so you made a new build video for me! I appreciate you!! Haha looks like fun
Thanks for subscribing! 🤩
Awesome!! Can't wait to see the build....but don't give too much away - I'm hoping you'll win in Reno and HSF 🤫😉
Thanks 😊
Nice job guys- keep it up :) When you need some new Landshorter VGs for this beast let me know :)
Hopefully by March.

I’m hoping to order a kit in 2022

What do you expect the fuel burn of the new Yamaha in stock configuration to be?
I don’t expect it to be really any better or worse than other engines. Seems like it pretty much takes a given amount of fuel to make a given amount of power. I know some engines are more efficient than others but will just have to wait and see what it gets.
@@SteveHenry Right on! I'm really excited to see your new bird in the air. You were looking mighty fast at dead cow this year!
What are you estimating you weight will be??
How / where can someone purchase a crate engine like that? I’ve been looking for an Apex for a while. Interested in the sidewinder for sure!
From Arctic cat dealers. I think they call it Thundercat or something like that but it’s a sidewinder.
@@SteveHenry Thanks!
Why aren’t you building a nose wheel? Shouldn’t you be able to stop faster with that ?
I much prefer Taildragger airplanes for the way I like to fly and the places I like to go. I haven’t seen any nose wheel airplane that can stop as short as I stop in my Highlander!
Spoilers to stick it to the ground.
Great idea
? does anyone run nitrous in planes like in street racing to get more power?
Hi Steve is the Sidewinder engine a snowmobile engine and if so does it use the same gearbox as the apex
Yes, it is a snowmobile engine.

@@whitetrashgarage8110 thank you very much 👍
So if you're flying 6, and building 8, what happened to 7?
Sold seven about a year ago.
@@SteveHenry Makes sense.
Yee Haw! I'll be happy to take #6 off your hands...😂
We do need to get you in a Highlander!
Love the plane but I’d rather have the crane…
