  • Tudor crime and punishment explained in 15 minutes. From crime, to trial, to execution.
    THE TUDORS
The Tudor dynasty was a series of kings and queens of England. This line of rulers started in 1485 and lasted until 1603.
The dynasty started when Henry Tudor defeated Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Field. This was the final stage of the Wars of the Roses and made him King Henry VII of England. Arthur, Prince of Wales, was the oldest son of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York. He married Catherine of Aragon. She was the daughter of Ferdinand II of Argon and Isabella I of Castle). Arthur died in 1502 and did not become King.
    Henry VIII
When Henry VII died in 1509, Arthur's brother, Henry VIII married Catherine and became king.
During her marriage to Henry VIII, Catherine had six children. Only one of these children, Mary, survived. When Catherine became too old to have any more children, Henry divorced her (breaking with Rome and become the head of the Church of England himself), so that he could marry Anne Boleyn. Henry and Boleyn also had a daughter, Elizabeth. Anne Boleyn was executed in 1536.
Shortly after, Henry VIII married Jane Seymour of England. She had one son, Edward VI of England, who would later become king himself at the age of 9. Jane died in 1537. Her death was caused by medical problems caused by Edward's birth.
Henry married three other wives (Anne of Cleves, Katherine Howard and Katherine Parr) before his death in 1547. Edward, his only living son, became King after Henry died.
In 1553, Edward became ill. He created the "Device for Succession.". He said that his cousin, Lady Jane Grey, would be Queen after he died. Lady Jane lived for only nine days as Queen.
Henry's daughter, Mary I of England, was the next ruler of the Tudor dynasty. Mary was a strong believer in Catholicism. As Queen, Mary did many things against hundreds of Protestants. Because of all the executions while she was Queen, she was given the nickname "Bloody Mary", which is a name for a modern cocktail today.
After Mary's death in 1558, her half-sister Elizabeth I of England became queen. Unlike Mary, Elizabeth was a Protestant. Elizabeth never married or had children. Because she never married, Elizabeth is often called the "Virgin Queen". She was well liked by most of the people of England.
The dynasty ended when Elizabeth died. She had not named a person to be ruler after her death. When she died, James I became King of England. He was the son of Elizabeth's cousin, Mary Stuart. This started the Stuart dynasty.

I have to wonder how anyone survived back then. If the filth and starvation didn’t get you a possible crime might! Excellent series, thank you.

Well done and frightfully sad. We must never hide from history but recognize how far we've come, and have not.

Nor should anyone think, we're above anyone else, as all groups, black, white and Asian, have had the same punishment once upon a time

The thought that public executions were considered to be “entertainment” says a lot about the culture up until public executions were banned in the 1800’s in Britain. I can’t even imagine getting excited about going to see someone hang, burn, be beheaded or be hung, drawn and quartered.
Our neighbors’ grandma was a little girl in turn of the 20th century Arizona (USA) when her small town held their final public execution. Her parents and older brothers had given her explicit instructions to stay at home while the execution took place in front of the town jail. She got mad and decided that they were being unfair, so she slipped out of her home unseen and went to see what all of the fuss was about. Seeing the party atmosphere made her think that the town was celebrating something wonderful-until the condemned man was brought out and marched up onto the scaffold to be hung. It turned out to be a botched job and the poor man had to be hung twice. This poor young girl was so thoroughly traumatized by what she witnessed and by the cheers and clapping when the condemned man finally died. Why would people cheer and applaud such a horrifying sight? She ran home before her parents and brothers returned from witnessing the hanging. They figured that she’d obeyed their instructions. It wasn’t until the terrible nightmares began that the truth came out. She asked her family members why they’d clapped and cheered like the rest of the crowd. This was not only embarrassing but deeply disturbing for those people to have to confront. I remember her telling us that even though she got counseling when she was quite a bit older she was plagued by nightmares of that execution for the rest of her life. Supposedly the death penalty was/is suppose to act as a deterrent against more terrible crimes being committed. It doesn’t work. There are better and more humane ways of dealing with serious offenders.

The death penalty stops repeat offenders dead in their tracks.

The comments about sadism & needless brutality: How can intelligent people not be able to extrapolate the conditions of the time and understand that because of their current reality, those people did not THINK like we do. They were vastly more practical and mentally tough but ignorant, superstitious, and had a completely different set of standards, ideals & references. Not even going to mention the huge cultural impact of religion.
It is one of the most glaring (and irritating) flaws in historical fiction when the author takes a mentally modern character & sets them in long gone age - with their modern thought processes. Just ludicrous & it's almost universal.
It must be because so many people haven't traveled much and can't understand how fundamentally different various cultures can be. Two weeks at the resort is not teaching anyone the priorities of a local 3rd world family. Yet to the 1st world person it's self evident that they know more, are superior - and will even pretend not to think so, because see how NICE they are?
Similarly, I have a friend who constantly rails against Christianity and isn't self aware enough to see he is far more intolerant than they are, and has literally zero comprehension of even the existence of the many profound philosophical ideas of Christianity, worked out over hundreds of years by brilliant minds. But he fancies himself modern, educated, SUPERIOR to those "backward sheep". It is just ignorance, but I'm always surprised at how prevalent it is among the most educated populace in world history.
As for me, I find the older am, the dumber I get. Is there no end to learning what I DON'T know?

The Tudors seem to have used terror as a political weapon. The consequences of stepping out of line were merciless. Execution and torture on a large scale were their speciality. They may not have had a police force but they did develop England’s first spy network, to instil fear and mistrust. A brutal age. But the Tudors also mastered the techniques of propaganda, so that their reign is now considered as the golden age of England compared to the previous Plantagenets.

It is hegemony - if you don't follow the social rules then they are imposed through violence.

@@tudorworldhistorychannel3955 perhaps it was the result of the Tudors imposing conformity and obedience, in return for political stability. The ruthless application of the law as an antidote to the violence and anarchy of the previous century. Except for many the application of the law under the post Reformation Tudors was just as arbitrary and intimidating as the Wars of the Roses

No, it was a trumped up accusation; Anne was certainly calculating and had a less pleasant character, but Henry NEEDED a son, so Cromwell organised a way out for him.
