The fact this movie is clearly aimed at the female audience and only 35% of the audience was female is a real eye opener. It makes me really interested in seeing a survey on what percent of female cinema goers are interested in super hero movies and if they are why didn’t they go and see this.
The majority of the CBM fans are male so the majority isn’t surprising. But Marvel is *failing* at getting female moviegoers (who aren’t typical CBM fans) to see these movies. They think that they can have lazy scripts and cringey girl power lines and that will be enough for women to show up to support these movies. It’s kind of insulting when you think of it like that.
The majority of comic book fans are overwhelmingly boys and men but the writers and industry have for years been calling men/fans toxic and saying ‘’it’s not made for you” so they listen.
"Girl power" movies that market themselves as such have a track record of not being good movies. So if you are already not interested you will not go unless there is a lot of fanfare about it being amazing or being an event -and neither can be used to describe this movie
Just a note: Men don’t see movies for male actors specifically. Like, we don’t go to Wonder Woman pumped to see Chris Pine. Men see female-centric movies if the movies appeal to narrative interests. Because Wonder Woman and WandaVision are so integral to the comic book space, men watch those properties. A movie like The Marvels doesn’t suffer because it’s an all-female cast; it’s because the male audience senses the story is not the important factor, but rather the push for inclusivity.

The MCU can fix their problems. But they must be honest with themselves and get rid of those people who the cause of this mess.
I've come to realize it's really bad for Marvel when Grace has admitted that all the stuff people are saying is true. Not saying she didn't think it was true. It's the fact she's mainstream. She has to play the game. It's game over
I knew this movie was going to flop, and whoever was the writer on this movie she is trash the villain was trash, didn’t do a good job. They should’ve never change the villain to a woman in the first place maybe if they added the three marvel men that are in the group in the comics maybe the movie would’ve came out better, but they don’t follow comics at all anymore

Exactly! I’ve loved it from the start. But now they are trying to tailor projects towards me, I don’t enjoy them. I just want a good film. But then the women I love die, like Wanda and Black Widow.
The more Grace talks about what she likes the more I realize that she is the audience these movies are made for, and it's not in line with enough of the audience to make money.
Good insight. While Grace has honestly addressed the failures in the MCU’s direction, she still makes ‘representation’ and identify politics part of her entire channel. She constantly points out LGBT, POC characters (or the lackthereof) in almost every film she reviews. So as you said, SHE is exactly who these films are made for. 😒
@@TheLifeOnHigh I found it interesting when she points to movies like Oppenheimer for not being diverse enough, but points out people should see movies about other people when it came to The Woman King. It’s just as much bullshit to see a movie because of its representation (instead of it interesting you), as it is to not see a movie because of representation.
I cannot believe that after all was set and done, it was White Men who was the main audience in this movie. Goes to show how out of touch online discussions can really be with cold hard reality.
Online discussions have always been echo chambers. Social media is no different from the internet forums of the late 90s and early 2000s. It's just that today, Hollywood takes it literally.
The attitude that people must see a film with diversity because it is "the right thing to do" is a major part of the problem. Hollywood needs to get off their high horse and stop telling the public what they should be enjoying and start listening to the audience who is not beholden to spend their money on poorly written, preachy movies that would rather scold the audience than entertain them.
I think it's just projection. Hollywood was so exclusive for so long and in an effort to atone they get on a very aggressive soap box. I mean Hollywood created all the issues surrounding a serious lack of diversity in the first place, and now it's audiences fault to fix it somehow?
Oh they went way past "preachy". Its been heavily about making male characters look weak and stupid. It has eroded the fanbase to the point where its no longer profitable.
To be fair what’s more preachy and scolding of audiences more than Avatar, those are some of the most successful films ever made. You could also argue Barbie was very preachy. Those films made billions. It can be an ingredient, just not the entire recipe.
The "Post-pandemic" excuse is another case of not dealing with reality. INFLATION is forcing people to make more careful buying decisions. In 2019, it wasn't a factor. Maybe tanking the US economy for political reasons wasn't a good idea.
@kityhawk2000 Same goes for ant man 2. Continuity is what was helping mcu movies earn so much money. The stories were connecting. But now series were made and only put on streaming services, which put some fans in the dark.
I refuse to believe Kevin Fiege and the people at Marvel didn’t know this was going to happen. This film underperformed for MULTIPLE reasons, and the biggest is the onslaught of poorly received projects within such a short timeframe. There was a time when people would see a Marvel movie because it was a Marvel movie (Antman notwithstanding lol), and that good faith has been eroded bit by bit. The Marvels was never going to do well, no matter what the quality was, because people have stopped believing Marvel will deliver a good product.
PREACH. I truly don’t understand how the marvel studio execs are still employed with the amount of loses they’ve taken since the launch of Disney+. The answer is clear, but their response is to make more of what fans are rejecting
Scott Lang was introduced as an engineer and whistle-blower who went to prison, then became a joker/goofball (perhaps to survive in prison) but we didn't see him wise up and show his engineering skills in the movies. They also took the romance with the Wasp away in the second movie, having her pissed at him.
99% of the good will the MCU created in phase 1 and 2 is gone. Feige has to re build it from the ground up by going to back respecting the characters, stories, and the FANS.
Some of those movies weren't fantastic; it sees like only when they got together as the Avengers did it become a phenomenon. Maybe if they added three guys then _The Marvels_ could have been an Avengers movie and still have the female team-up and bonding scenes.

The reality is that the tier of female characters who could support a marvel movie is like Jean Grey and Storm and not Carole who has always struggled. They got high riding the wave of the mcu’s peak and forgot that Carole is just not a fan favorite.
You do realize people said the exact same thing about Captain America and Iron Man right? It's not about the characters, it's about the execution. Marvel has been focusing more on pushing an agenda than making quality products.

You nailed it several years ago when you said Wonder Woman was like the original Superman movie (gender roles reversed) - audiences want to see men & women working together and not being made to look stupid. It's that simple.
It seems Hollywood can't release a film like this anymore. In fact we are mostly seeing men being dopey and women being extremely competent in just about every blockbuster now. These studios don't realize all the good films from earlier decades that are "now considered offensive", actually do a far better job at relating to men and women, and writing realistic portrayals of both.
I absolutely HATED the term M-She-U. I was convinced it was internet weirdos whining about women. But honestly film after film. From Dr.Strange to Black Panther. Men are pushed aside for young women. Men are idiots. Women are strong. Then in She-Hulk when I saw that boulder throwing scene, I was like "Well. There it is. They were right." Disney convinced me the M-She-U people were right. That's a damned shame.
0:50 those who are looking for a representation should demand Agents of SHIELD characters to be acknowledged by the MCU. The show had a diverse cast but didn't insult white males in the process. The show's strong female characters are incredibly well-written, I guess this is why Feige doesn't want them on the big screen. He would rather push She-Hulk and the Marvels instead.

Its a symptom of the huge amount of narcissism we have in the world today and it keeps getting worse. Especially prevalent among women. They literally cant relate unless somone looks similar to them. Insane.
I'm a woman who has enjoyed Marvel since Captain America. You know what I liked about it? Getting to watch good-looking, hero men with love interests be heroes. My friends and I often talked about which Marvel hero was our "type" and it was fun. Women like watching men too. That doesn't mean we didn't want to see female heroes. If we could relate to them, that would be awesome. I loved Wonder Woman. Even the 2nd one! But these female heroes are too perfect and bear the burden of being mouthpieces for an ideology instead of having their own compelling characters and stories. It's like the WWII propaganda cap does in his first movie. None of that is compelling or worth my time and money. It's a damn shame because these ARE good characters.
I sat through the marvels and not once felt that they were burdened to be mouthpieces of an ideology. Carol isn't portrayed as perfect in this either, so imo your 2nd para is rather irrelevant to atleast this movie.

They said the same thing about Barbie... but the majority of the audience was female. It just comes down to doing a great marketing and being actually well written and produced
@Rafael-vg1ou who said that about Barbie. Barbie clearly has strong female appeal and was always key demographic. Superhero films appeal to men. The key is the writing and a well contextualised backstory.
@@Rafael-vg1ou Movies made for women will always thrive with their intended demographic, see: Barbie, Beauty and The Beast, Moana, and pretty much every Disney princess movie (except Wish, of course). The problem began when they started to try to convince more women to watch Superhero movies (and action movies). It should have been no secret that the majority of women do not prefer this type of content, for whatever reasons. So they managed to push away the original demographic for these movies, without attracting a new one.
Not only did Marvel alienate their core audience but the earliest sin was the great decline in quality as early as phase 3. It’s all just catching up to them now.
@@alejandromolinacI think alienated doesn't make a lot of sense. This film isn't in your face with feminism or any of that stuff. But these characters aren't that popular with the core audience, and so an average marvel movie in a crowded marvel base with characters (even if well acted) that don't appeal to the core demographic aren't going to do well. But like acting wasn't the issue this film had. Acting was fine so I don't get the idea of alienation. And while the script wasn't great, I also don't see anyway it's going to offend marvels core audience or conservatives. Just that these characters don't naturally appeal to the demographic. This movie needed to superb in this market and it just was average.
I saw THE MARVELS on Saturday night at my local theater in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. The theater I was in was slightly smaller than an IMAX but held a seating capacity of 215 (not including front row handicap). There were only six people including myself in the entire room. Two left halfway through, leaving the remaining four. This was undoubtedly the lowest turnout for a big budget Hollywood movie that I’ve seen in almost 20 years.😢

Seeing a movie "because its the right thing to do" makes no sense! That implies we are there for THEM not the other way around. Why are we still trying to put everything in for everybody? Let everyone make what they want to see! Your budget is defined by the size of your audience. (but you can always add your own money)
None of these characters are popular. Period. They keep trying to force them on people to make you like them and no one dies. Not even in comics do they sell
As South Park once said, "Put a chick in it and make her lame and gay" No wonder Disney is steaming right now South Park owns them and their next release does exactly what South Park accused them of.
the one point I have to add to all this is that the MCU overall story has been very convoluted since endgame. Since then its followed Star Wars in telling almost meaningless stories that audiences just aren't convinced they "have to see". Not only that but these stories don't feel nearly as well choreographed as the first several phases.
just because one group was over represented since ever doesn't mean you can leave them out. Why did Barbie or Wonder Woman 1 work? Because both are female centric, both movies had that big "I'm a woman and no man"-scene. but they worked because all groups in the movie where represented in a positiv way.
When in the Marvels did they bash a group? (I'm assuming white men). No one was represented in a bad light, they just weren't in the movie. Not seeing yourself in a movie is basically most of my life liking marvel until maybe 2016
Great take - I agree with Wonder Woman, Steve was a competent man - a few silly moments, but over all a well written action hero thrust into a world with superheroes. He understood Wonder Woman was stronger, faster, and capable... and he still did his part.
Wonder Woman wasnt female centric. As soon as she leaves Themyscira shes basically the only woman in the film. Yes, shes the lead. But its not female centric.
That's exactly the problem. People who are making this about "representation" and "diversity" only care about one thing: Politics. This is why the quality of tv shows and movies have gone down the tubes lately.
In the past, I didn’t really care about representation because I grew up seeing actors on screen who didn’t resemble me. My mindset changed when I started seeing Pedro Pascal in non-stereotypical supportive and leading roles.
@@steelwayne You're forgetting about the greats like Eddie Murphy back in the 80s and Chris Tucker in the 90s. It's not like representation is a recent phenomenon. 🤣 What's recent is putting representation ahead of important things like merit and talent.
Whoa grace.. I’m shocked hearing you say that’s been clear for a while but it’s become acceptable to admit it’s true lol but thanks for getting here finally, and i believe you did so for good reasons, hopefully this can lead to better quality productions.
Unfortunately this is the most accurate account, in my opinion, of how Disney is handling the Comic and Star War spaces for the male audience. The other issue is that men love comic book violence exploited by superpowers and Marvel refuses to show "blood" because of the young quadrant. This is why The Boys and its spin off are doing so well. We will switch brands to get what we want!
Something that reallys annoys me is the idea that most things in cinema, on TV, or wherever need to have broad appeal. There is no problem with Cinderella not appealing to most boys just like there is no problem that Hulk is not appealing to most girls. There is a difference between making something that excludes other demographics and making something that just doesn't appeal to other demographics, and we need to be okay with this.
Unfortunately studios make movies to make money, so excluding large chunks of their potential audience doesn't sit well with the accountants. Whenever they believe something will make a film appealing to 80 million people rather than 50 million, that's the way they'll go. So inevitably we wind up with movies and TV show which offend as few people as possible, even if that reduces enthusiasm among those predisposed to watch.
Either way the budget has to be lowered to a point where it makes sense financially. You wouldn't spend 250 million dollars to make a season of a show about bass fishing ( yes they exist ) because it doesn't have broad appeal while hundreds of millions are spent to obtain the rights to college football, gotta let bean counters do their thing or you may spend the next few years in bankruptcy proceedings.
Your correct but what we had here was people thinking they can use the core fanbase as they catered to a different and new fanbase. And sadly the core fanbase for years when they said something it was weaponized against them. They put up with it for a while because they loved the characters but it became to much and it was time to walk away.
I genuinly think this movie wouldnt have done so bad if didnt come out so late. Like swap this with the release of multiverse and it would have done better. But its at the tail end of a bunch of bad projects that have made fans and causals lose faith.
Good point. I also think _Quantumania_ could have been a West-Coast Avengers movie with Shang-Chi and others. Then _The Marvels_ could have been an Avengers-level movie by adding 3 guys to do something while still keeping the female-bonding. (I haven't seen it yet.)

Oh wow. Damn so they really don't know their audience 😮
It’s kinda funny how marvel keeps alienating and making fun of there strongest fan base. So weird.
Online discussions have always been echo chambers. Social media is no different from the internet forums of the late 90s and early 2000s. It's just that today, Hollywood takes it literally.

The attitude that people must see a film with diversity because it is "the right thing to do" is a major part of the problem. Hollywood needs to get off their high horse and stop telling the public what they should be enjoying and start listening to the audience who is not beholden to spend their money on poorly written, preachy movies that would rather scold the audience than entertain them.
well they thought it would get them gurantee money lol!
I think it's just projection. Hollywood was so exclusive for so long and in an effort to atone they get on a very aggressive soap box. I mean Hollywood created all the issues surrounding a serious lack of diversity in the first place, and now it's audiences fault to fix it somehow?

Captain Marvel was only successful because of positioning between Infinity war/Endgame. It was touted as "must see before endgame"
Captain Marvel was also touted as being a really big part of Endgame so audiences felt they had to see it get the full story of the Infinity Wars saga
Captain marvel was successful because they were making fun movies then. It had nothing to do with gender.
@kityhawk2000 Same goes for ant man 2. Continuity is what was helping mcu movies earn so much money. The stories were connecting. But now series were made and only put on streaming services, which put some fans in the dark.
I don’t know how people don’t understand this
I refuse to believe Kevin Fiege and the people at Marvel didn’t know this was going to happen.

Captain Marvel was the start of the disinterest in Nick Fury, Secret Invasion was the result of his character assassination.

Yes, shes the lead. But its not female centric.
Representation without reason is just pandering. No one likes pandering and this is a clear example of that.
Exactly 💯💯
@ricktavares706. Pedro Pascal is a White-Hispanic man. He’s hardly representative of your average Mestizo or Mulatto Hispanic-American.
Blade was a movie and it people didn’t act like black people had never been in a movie before like they did with black panther
Totally agree.
Whoa grace.. I’m shocked hearing you say that’s been clear for a while but it’s become acceptable to admit it’s true lol but thanks for getting here finally, and i believe you did so for good reasons, hopefully this can lead to better quality productions.
"You did bring everyone together in NOT enjoying your project." 💀 😂
Make a product that appeals to a tiny amount of people and act amazed when you lose a fortune.
The Disney cycle.
Disney needs to learn how to read the room. Imagine how successful a well done scarlet witch movie could have done instead of the marvels
I'm glad this movie bombs, not because I want Marvel to fail, but because I want them to start thinking about quality.
Wow, Grace analysis of The Marvel's is what the disenfranchised fans been saying for years now.
It's so bad at Marvel right now even Grace has to admit it
Unfortunately this is the most accurate account, in my opinion, of how Disney is handling the Comic and Star War spaces for the male audience. The other issue is that men love comic book violence exploited by superpowers and Marvel refuses to show "blood" because of the young quadrant. This is why The Boys and its spin off are doing so well. We will switch brands to get what we want!
My god the boys is amazing and gen v too can’t wait for the boys season 4
Chickens are coming home and grace has to finally tell the truth after almost 5 years of this
It’s like the conspiracies that came out during 2020 that we found out were all true now lol
The fact of the matter is that movies initially targeted at a male audience tend to be more fun to watch.
Haha! Good one
There has been a clear downward trend for Marvel and if this doesn't wake them up to make real changes nothing will
Why are we acting like we didn’t have representation back in the day! When it’s done in good taste and serves the story; people will watch.
Turn off all the men from watching your super hero movie... genius. Why don't you make a Barbie movie aimed at men while you're at it
6:18 I did not know that!
Disney buys properties to get male customers, then turns it into products for women 😂
People like grace should of pointed this out earlier, even she is afraid of ding dongs out there.
As much as Grace drives me crazy sometimes, her analysis of The Marvels, The MCU and Disney is 110% right. 👏
The M-She-U strikes again.
M-She-U “offensive” also “undeniably true”! 😂
You crack me up, Grace! 🤣
Im glad Grace is finally acknowledging the existence of the MSheU.
I used the phrase a couple of years ago in these comments and Grace's viewers attacked me for being a 'bigot'
To be honest, I, personally, have started watching most movies at home rather than going to theaters to watch it. I got too comfortable in pause & fast forwarding some parts if the movie is mediocre. With the exception of a few recent movies which personally excited me like Mission Impossible, John Wick, Oppenheimer, I was not interested in going for any other movie to theaters.
Groundbreaking. I am watching movies at home since VHS exists.
And you don't have to deal with rude people
" fast forwarding some parts if the movie is mediocre." *facepalm*
Oppenheimer is the only movie I've watched in the cinema in over three years.
