  • Description:
    The Cambrian on 2009-Aug-25.

The Cambrian - the Cambrian coast express - a spectacular railway journey along the Dovey estuary, Mawddach estuary and the West coast of Wales, aboard preserved passenger stock (with a delightful absence of air-conditioning or sealed windows) hauled by preserved steam locomotive. This section of railway line (Dovey Junction to Pwllheli) has been considered for closure several times. May the steam train, and its popularity, help to prevent such talk.

This is not professional DVD quality, just a few video clips, no frills. Sorry about the wind noise - obviously, the wrong type of microphone was used.
    Commentary: chuffed by 76079.
A slow broadband connection may cause the video play to stall regularly. To cure this, pause (||) the video and allow it to "pre-load" (pale grey band) for a few minutes.

    Part 3:
Not long after leaving Harlech, The Cambrian slows down for the bridge crossing at Pensarn harbour, just after Pensarn station (out of view, other side). The railway turns inland, but the coast (and the sun shining on the sea) can still be seen, in the distance, from the train. The railway joins the coast again a few miles before Barmouth. The Cambrian slows down to make a scheduled stop at Barmouth station and make way for a sprinter train travelling in the opposite direction (the Dovey Junction to Pwllheli railway is single-track with passing loops at main stations). Leaving the station, the rails make a sharp left turn through the town, then through a short tunnel to a right turn onto Barmouth bridge, situated near the mouth of the Mawddach estuary. After the bridge, there is a burst of speed before slowing down for a short stop at Fairbourne. Soon after passing the terminus and engine sheds of the Fairbourne narrow-gauge steam railway, 76079 gets stuck into the climb up to the rock shelter on the side of the mountain (Mynydd Pennant). Here, the railway sits on a rocky ledge high above the coast-line. Later, the climb is done and The Cambrian is on a rapid descent (at this point, the sound volume is turned down to diminish the constant roar) along the coast to Towyn (Tywyn) for a short stop (not shown). See heads poking out of windows - is everyone having a great time? The Cambrian speeds off again, and in the last clip, 76079 is seen slinging the train around the long, left-hand curve that takes the railway into the Dovey Estuary (Afon Dyfi) and the town of Aberdovey (Aberdyfi).

5 stars for a great ride.
It looks a though a lot of folks were out and about being filmmakers that day. But yours made it around the world by now. :-)
