I loved action man. My capture copter was my pride and joy that Christmas. Seeing the price they go for is eye watering. Same with the stretch monster. WOW!
When I was a kid in the 80s I made a helicopter backpack for my GI Joes using a motor from an old Millenium Falcon and a painted popsicle stick as the helicopter blades. I thought I had come up with the coolest new accessory and now I found out that I was beaten to the punch by Palitoy!
I used random motors for all kinds of stuff. Of course, what I made never quite equaled what I'd imagined. When my FANG copter's blades broke off I tried to motorize them. Part of me thought there was a vague chance that it would fly.
Ever think of trying to design toys? I will always respect toy designers because you pass imagination on to kids and I don't buy that junk that kids don't play with toys today garbage. I know my niece does.
Memories of my favourite Christmas ever. Desperate lobbying for AM Space kit getting rewarded, Mum fighting Action Men into the neckhole of those bloody rubber suits.. good times..
Those are awesome! I remember GI Joe Adventure Force having equipment like this, then there was Madelman from Spain who had similar toys...man I miss those toys
Thank you for sharing your wonderful childhood memories with us, Dave! I remember cutting out comic book adverts that featured Star Wars toys and play sets to put on my wall as a kid! Always dreaming of having cooler toys that I rarely got back then! I grew up with Adventure People, Megos, Six Million Dollar Man, Micronauts, and Star Wars action figures, and I had at the GI Joe in camo fatigues with the "Kung Fu Grip." He had the facial scar and the brown, fuzzy hair, beard and mustache. That's the closest I got to Action Man. By the time the small GI JOEs rolled around, I wasn't collecting toys anymore, and it's only in recent years that I've been collecting them. So far I have every figure from 1982-1987, and many of the better vehicles. You're never to old to be a kid again. :)
It’s often remarkable how many of share the same experiences and memories. When I was 9 years old, that Christmas Day I got the Space Ranger Action Man and this laser pack along with the Space Speeder vehicle- perhaps the best Christmas gift set of all time. Today, visiting my parents house I rescued the Space Speeder along with parts of the Ranger uniform (sadly the action man itself is long lost) but the laser pack was there and complete. The electronics no longer work but I’m delighted to have these back 40 years later.
That’s Ace! I remember all the points you mentioned being problems as a kid. I was lucky to have a dedicated action man to be the space ranger. The under crotch strap went straight away, it was a pain! The visor I lost and was gutted, it must have been easily detachable. My wires didn’t work after a very short time so I could only illuminate the front. The batteries eventually leaked and that was nearly the end of it but I loved it so much! It was really cool and I’m so glad you’ve shown this. I would have loved the space walk accessory as I was obsessed with that kind of toy. Great video thanks! 😁👍👊😎
Thanks Dave. Nice review. As a young boy, my parents could not afford Action Man/ GI Joe as they were quite expensive. I got the poor man's version which was Major Matt Mason. I'm mentionning this because he had a space walk thingy similar to the one featured here. Unfortunately, after a short while, the cable inside the backpack became tangled and the device would no longer work. I can tell you I was one 10 years old heart broken boy.
What a cool toy. I had never seen this before, and was amazed seeing all the cool accessories and the overall aesthetic is just so great. If I remember rightly, the big GI Joe (v1? edit- sorry, v2, the Adventure Team) also had a kind of portable backpack helicopter, maybe even larger than this one, but I don't think it was this cool. And those painted illustrations are super awesome! Why can't we have that kind of stuff today?
It was neat to hear about an Action Man figure getting used as a model in a James Bond film. In fact, I saw some old catalogs online advertising the Moon-raker tie in toys from another toy company, and they apparently used the model used in the film to advertise their tie in toy line. So they basically used a possible rival toy line to advertise their toy line.
That helped correct my memories - I'd assumed I'd bought the battlepack as one set complete with the add-ons. I guess I was particulary flush with my pocket money that weeked (or had gone back a few weeks later). Unfortunately my Action Man's Space Ranger outfit "melted" in storage, and I had to bin it
Love your videos, particularly Action Man ones. I watched your excellent video of the restoration of the Deep Sea Diver. The outfit took me right back to my childhood. I looked on Ebay and several months later, what started out as an interest in vintage AM, has turned into an obsession lol. Gives me something to do during Lockdown. So thanks again. By the way my gf thinks the Deep Sea Diver is the best outfit, in my ever growing AM collection.
As a huge fan of classic Sci-Fi, I always love the design on vintage space toys. Perfect timing on the video too as I just happen to see it right after starting to watch Plan 9 from Outer Space!🤣 Great video as always Dave! Thanks buddy!
Wow total nostalgia with that poster Dave I remember having it along with Captain Zargon! I have my battle pack visor currently attached to Zargons head it's a perfect fit!
I immediately thought the suit resembled something for Deep sea diving as well... But once you add the other accessories... Its really a cool looking figure/outfit
Back in the day I got the Talking Commander and my Brother got a Space Ranger, both were Great but at the time I just felt it was to modern. This toy I don’t remember but I prefer the helmet 👍
It was nice seeing the catalog poster, the art of the time was amazing and the full space range was nice to see. I hope that you get another example for permanent mounting. I saw Analog Toys using an Action Man sheet recently for a video and would love to obtain something similair as a field for my Action Force range on display.
The posters are amazing. I have a couple of this one now as it is by far my favourite, and will be getting one frame to go on the wall. It's just packed full of memories.
I think the rubber strap is intended to be looped through itself in the front. I know, this would make it an even more tight fit, but it looks tidier than the square hole poking upwards
@Toy Polloi I remember my Dad using talcum powder to get the rubber space suits onto my Action Man. You are right though, they were a nightmare to get them on!
@@toypolloi Yes, they were infuriating! Oh, do you have the diving submarine? That was my favourite as a kid! They really did have some ingenious features! Oh and the Gargoile monster thing that walked until you fired a torch at it if I remember right! Was he called the intruder? I prefer to see if my memory works than Google it and you’re the Action Man, man! (See what I did there). I’m pretty sure I had a hang glider too that flew but I might be mistaken! Great memories! My favourite Army one was the German Desert and sidecar! I loved that toy! Plus the Police motorcycle was excellent too! They did motorcycles really well!
I've got some videos on the submarine, it was a fun thing to fix up. I mainly collect the outfits, not got the room for too many vehicles. Although I am working on one now for a future video. Got myself an Intruder recently. Doesn't fit in with the rest of the Action Man toys, but it's pretty cool.
I had attachments that came from another older toy. Have no idea what it was. But as a child had a circular saw and my helicopter was red. Oh and you could swab out saw for a drill.
Not sure if it was mentioned, but the arms on the action pack are a bit short because I think they are a reused mold of the arms used for the Super Joe GI Joe heli-pack. He was the 8.5 inch scale figure so he had shorter arms and it worked well for him, but not so much for Action man. :) I believe they came out at about the same time as this set.
I love the Space Ranger accessory sets but i don't like messing around with them too much because there are fairly delicate which is no doubt why they're so hard to pick up nowadays. I also personally think the Battlepack and Laser box art is amongst the best to adorn any Action Man box.
Thanks. I don't have a template for it. I just made it up based on an original I had. My replacement is not that great, but it does hold the batteries in which was all I wanted.
Almost have a Gi joe 1967 deep sea diver. I have all the parts. Now just trying to get a good price on the figure themselves. I missed out of these toys being raised in the States.
Remember these sets as well but only had the captain. The set might have been part of the Super Joe line in the US or Captain Power as I think it may have been called in the UK. Certainly the Gargon was. Palitoy possibly added it to thier space ranger line.
1:48 Wait, what? It never occurred to me that Rom would have been in scale with the older G.I. Joe figures. Did he get incorporated into the Action Man line over there, or was he just being sold through Palitoy?
Hi Dave, loved this video! Did the Battle Pack laser activate the Green Gargon Action Man (6 legged walking alien dinosaur looking thing) as well? I swear I read that somewhere?! Yours works, perhaps you could try it out in another video!! 😁 Keep up the great work!
@@toypolloi I bought the space ranger helmet and gloves, a sky diving jumpsuit, action man or six million dollar man white boots (to stand in for the space ranger boots until I get a pair) and an astronaut backpack. Looks pretty cool to me lol.
Great review. You have never done a video that I haven't enjoyed. You are a gift to youtube!
Wow, thank you!
Nice to see ROM in there!
Seeing that poster is a walk down memory lane... Crikey!
I can't imagine how awesome that would have been to have that as a kid. Great video as always!
Seems like action man is doing a "chicken dance", considering how short those handles are.😁
I had it! It was ace! 👍Really cool. 😎Until I broke it! 🤣 Brilliant fun period of action man for me I loved all of it.
I so want these toys.... now, lol. Palitoy had such great toys. My GI Joe figures need that rubber suit and helmet. Thanks

Watching this I can even feel the happiness and excitement coming through the screen. =) So nice to see. =)
Another great video. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Danny
Glad you enjoyed it

The helibackpack was first used for Hasbro's SuperJoe. That is the reason the handgrip arms are too short for Actionman. Another great vid.
Thanks. I didn't know that. Shame they didn't take the time to modify them.
Excellent review I didn't know some of the details with this set👍

Take care

Yes, you can do that. But as you say it makes it even harder to get on. That's why I have mine like this just to give a little more room.
@Toy Polloi I remember my Dad using talcum powder to get the rubber space suits onto my Action Man. You are right though, they were a nightmare to get them on!
That's what my Mum did as well. And I have used the same method recently to get the suit on another figure. It's still not easy.

Yes, the clips are brittle. I had to repair on clip on this set and make a new battery cover. Just for display now.
A take on Rom and his equipment and a look ahead to Super Joe. Major Matt Mason had a similar string pack.
Hi. Excellent review. I’m missing the visor and battery cover. Do you have a template for the latter please?
Thanks. I don't have a template for it. I just made it up based on an original I had. My replacement is not that great, but it does hold the batteries in which was all I wanted.
Looks like tower tools scuba attack and cliff climber for masters of the universe
Whoa, Action Man and James Bond? The only way you could've made it more iconically heroic British was to have them searching for Excalibur
Almost have a Gi joe 1967 deep sea diver. I have all the parts. Now just trying to get a good price on the figure themselves. I missed out of these toys being raised in the States.

Yes, he was mixed into the Action Man line in the UK.
Can you should us the grapple mechanism and how the pulleys work?
Check out my He-man Webstor video as I take that apart to repair it.
Hi
Hi Dave, loved this video! Did the Battle Pack laser activate the Green Gargon Action Man (6 legged walking alien dinosaur looking thing) as well? I swear I read that somewhere?! Yours works, perhaps you could try it out in another video!! 😁 Keep up the great work!
I believe so. The Gargon had a light sensor on the front of it. So the light from the laser would activate that and make it stop walking.
@@toypolloi Ahh, I see! Very high tech! 😁 Thank you for confirming I'm not losing the plot! 🤣🤣
By the way, did you cover the Action man field gun in your video's?
It's not one I own, So haven't covered it yet.
I'd love to get one of these for my custom space ranger female character .. I mean if it fits her Iol
It might be a bit big, but could look fun.
@@toypolloi I bought the space ranger helmet and gloves, a sky diving jumpsuit, action man or six million dollar man white boots (to stand in for the space ranger boots until I get a pair) and an astronaut backpack. Looks pretty cool to me lol.
I wanna send you some gashapon model kits how do I do this?
What is a Action man?
Thank you for the post and, Please stop folding the poster sir! It’s bad. :)
