For those of us that do not go in the dark zone, an easier way is to play countdown and and make it onto the helicopter at the end. Wash rinse and repeat as many times as you want. Then go to the countdown chest and buy exotics to break down into exotic components.
I farm these boxes alot. The boxes with the yellow paint have a zero percent change of dropping an exotic component, but (from my experience) it does not affect your rng for more exotic components. I have made runs where I opened the yellow painted boxes and runs where I avoided them. My rng was pretty consistent whichever way you go. In Darkzone East, there are 12 black boxes with the division logo on them (DZ West & South have only 5 or 6 black boxes), those are what will drop exotic components. If I can get 3 or 4 exotic components from those 12 boxes in one farming run, thats a pretty good run from my experience (about 25% drop rate).
The RNG on the painted boxes is as bad as it gets. It's a 0% chance of exotic components. lol... I'm 99.999% sure they don't have exotic components in their rotation. For the record, they put exotic components in the rewards for projects. One for the daily and three for the weekly. That's forty per week if you do it with four characters. There's also a guaranteed exotic for fifteen floors in the Summit. Even on normal. Doesn't take very long. This is for the players that don't like the DZ.
