Horse Progress Days is an annual event that encourages and promotes the combination of animal power and the latest equipment innovations in an effort to support small scale farming and land stewardship. It shows that show Draft Animal Power is possible, practical, and profitable.
This was our first HPD after purchasing Rural Heritage. It is hosted by Sam Moore. Sam gives us a thorough tour of all of the equipment demonstrated and displayed at the 13th annual Horse Progress Days in 2008 held in Mt Hope, Ohio. He explains the features of the implement in the static displays followed by film of it being demonstrated in the field with the power of a team of draft horses or mules. There are teams of Belgians, Percherons, Fjords, Haflingers, mules and more.
Sprinkled throughout the show is footage of the many things to do at HPD including crowd shots, food venders, petting zoo and more.

The gentleman who does the explaining of how each piece of equipment operates is amazing. His knowledge of farm equipment past and present is something I think few could equal.

I wish all farmers were operating the way we were 70 years ago. Today with no till our farm land is becoming as hard as concrete and even the earthworms cannot penetrate the hard packed soils. The days of turning over green manure each year to build that black rich soil are long gone.

I love to watch draft horse teams, but these demos are in very light soil conditions. In heavier rocky clay soils these implements drawn by teams would be considerably less efficient. Likewise, those ground-driven mini-spreaders with light loads would be a pain loaded with the real stuff in winter, with a team in belly-deep in snow. I know, I've been there and done that.

Depending on where you are in Kansas, you might consider driving up to Iowa and checking out the Albert City Threshermen and Collectors Show. I'm not sure if anything there is for sale, but I bet there'd be some knowledgable folks there that would gladly help you figure out what equipment you should buy and from what manufacturer.
