What's The Difference Between A TWSBI Eco & 580? - Q&A Slices

- I've already got a Lamy Safari and a pilot metropolitan, and my ink collection is an okay size. I'm looking into buying a TWSBI pen next, but I'm a little confused as to how different the Eco and diamond 580 actually are. Should I stick with the less expensive Eco and get a nicer bottle of ink with it, or is buying the more costly 580 (and sticking with the ink I've got) worth the extra money?
in terms of actual functionality, the Eco and 580 are not vastly different
the biggest difference in the 580 has swappable nib units, the Eco does not
both are piston
both can be fully disassembled and come with tools to do so
both hold a lot of ink
both cap well
aesthetics probably influence your decision more than anything
if you're looking to maximize your utility, then get the Eco and the bottle of ink, that's what the Eco is made for

I started with an ECO and fell in love. Then I saw my friend's 580 and loved it so I bought one for myself. I think that's the way to go. Start with the economical one and if you love it go for the more "sophisticated" 580AL. It's true that the write the same functionally, but the 580 has a more robust feel in the hand as you write, in my opinion.
Yeah, I think thats a good way to go about it as well. - Colin
I've had the Eco for about 6 months and love it! I've never had a problem with it burping or leaking but I did fill it like Brian suggested by filling, extracting and filling again while keeping the feed submerged in the ink. I believe the instructions suggested this too. It writes very well. I haven't had a problem with skipping. It's a great writer. I want to get a second to leave at the office. Thanks for comparing these because I'm definitely a TWSBI fan.
Hey markalfarkal, can you tell me how often you write? Or rather, how much writing you do in a day, week, month? I'm really thinking about getting an Eco. But really want to get the most for my money. I do a fair amount of writing a few dozen pages a week at a minimum... Thanks!
Any issues with cracking ?
I could've written this question myself - been having this exact dilemma with the same parameters this week! Thanks for the video, Brian & team!
I started off with a pink twisbi eco, and now I'm itching to upgrade to a 580. That finial is so pretty! 😍
The Eco 1.1 stub is absolute heaven
Just got my stub 1.1 Eco and I completely agree. Writing is pure joy and beauty.
Great, great video, Brian... Right after seeing this an nth time, I pitched my FIRST TWSBI, from you all...
I have a TWSBI Eco in lime, with an extra fine nib. I really like this pen for school. It writes well and is in my price range, being a university student.
I currently have it filled with Purple Heart 💜.
Yeah, I think the Eco is a great option for a student on a budget. Writes well & has a good ink capacity. - Colin
I was searching your past videos for this specific question just last week!
Longevity of the 580 vs the ECO may also factor in - when the nib on the ECO gets bent you're faced with the decision to spend $20 for a replacement nib (which you can hopefully install w/o damaging the feed) or $28 for a whole new pen. I've already bought 2 ECOs for this reason and could have actually saved money buying a 580 and replacing nibs if/when damaged.
How did the nib bend?
My nib on the Eco bent too, but I was able to put it back in.

Maybe my got a bit of a tuch when I droped my mobile on my writing hand.
After using both pens for 3 years straight, I actually don't agree with Brian here. TWSBI diamond 580 has a different physical balance that requires one to get used to it. ECO is more like a pick up and write kind of a pen. But once you get used to 580, you'll notice the difference it makes in your writing style.
I think there's a difference in the grip section between the two pens, besides the section being interchangeable on the 580 and fixed on the Eco. I've had an Eco for some time, and I recently purchased a Diamond 580AL, mostly because of the grip section, which is round, smooth, and nicely tapered to fit any grip. The grip section of the Eco ends with some nubs that stick out in three directions at the end near the nib, not as strong as a Lamy triangular grip, but headed in that direction. Those nubs make the Eco less comfortable for me to write with for very long, compared to the 580. Perhaps this wouldn't matter to most people, but for me it's quite a difference when writing with the pens.
I am fortunate to have two 580s, the black and gold edition with a fine nib and the red blue one with a medium nib . they both write like a dream :)
TWSBI= great pens. My favorites. And Goulet is the place to get them. I've got a couple of Ecos a Mini, no 580 yet ( and both Vacs) I write a lot, the ink reservoirs are large. I'm probably a bit rough with my fountain pens. I've climbed mountains with two fountain pens in my pocket. I've cracked some barrels and caps of some of my TWSBIs, the company is terrific about sending out replacement parts for the cost of shipping. These are pens for writers, or taking notes. I used to think Fine and Extra Fine would be best for my sloppy handwriting. I've learned to get stub nibs. I've ground my own italic nibs, but that's a whole DIY, stubs are 90% of the same thing (for regular cursive writing) and none of the hassles of DIY.
I've also had great luck with Noodler's Polar Blue. I just never seems to clog up, and while traveling when you dump that entire cup of coffee on your notebook.... no worries. I also like Noodlers Baystate Blue, but you have to keep it away from any other ink or it will clog up. I also noticed that the Eco unposted (cap off) and the Mini Posted are about the same weight and same center of gravity. Maybe that's why I can just go from one to the other.
I love my 580ALR, TWSBI’s are awesome
What fountain pens, other than the TWSBI ECO and TWSBI GO, have No. 4 size nibs?
How do I purchase a replacement nib feed for the #4 nib on the Eco?
Thank you
I own both, I kinda prefer the feel of the 580's #5 nib. But they're so similar, could just be preference.
I have all the TWSBI pens in demonstrator versions with diferent point an I love all...
I like them more than my Montblanc 146, my Platinum 3776, my Pilots Metropolitan, my Noodlers and my olds Esterbrooks... I try to use them every day....
Yeah, I got my first TWSBI (Vac Mini) and it has quickly replaced my other pens as my daily user. - Colin
I have a question regarding gold nib pens. I am looking to purchase a gold nib pen in the 100-200 dollar range. I know that you always recommend certain gold nib pens (Lamy 2000, Pilot custom 74, etc). which gold nib pen in this price range is the smoothest, in a fine nib. It doesn't matter how the pen looks, all I'm looking for is a smooth writing experience. I love your videos. keep on doing what you're doing! Thanks!
Pilot is definitely the way go in terms of a fine nib that's smooth. Any of the gold nib models would be great options (Custom 74, VP, E95s). Don't think you can go wrong there. - Colin
Love my eco, but not my Lamy so much.
The only thing I think the Lamy can compete with is the clip, but it is a bit wierd to.
what do diamond barrels, #4 and #5 nibs exactly mean?
Those are the nib sizes. The bigger the number, the larger the nib is usually. Not sure of the context, is this on a product listing? - Colin
i want i 580 when they release one with more color
Yeah, it's bound to happen at some point, maybe this fall? They had the Lava 580 & Pink 580 most recently. - Colin
Like the EF nib on my Safari Al-Star, so what nib on a TWSBI Eco?
Am I having a super-long deja vu? Or is this video a re-upload ?
All of our slices are from a previous Q&A, so you might have seen that upload a few weeks back with Episode 152. - Colin
Other ways to compare. What's difference in ink capacity, nib size, and give writing sample
For ink capacity, the Eco holds 1.76ml vs. 1.98ml in the 580. Neither pen is an exact nib size (like the Vac700R is #6), but the 580 is close to a #5. And you can compare writing samples of both using our Nib Nook tool: www.gouletpens.com/nib-comparison-tool - Colin
Thanks
Dont think you will fill it up completly as I do wit my Lamy with a converter.
can I use a Goulet nib in twsbi 580 ?
Ugh I want an 580 so bad. But it is $55 eco is only $28.5
I will say, because of the removable nib units, I think the 580 is a better deal even though it's a bit more! - Colin
the 580 is a higher quality pen with a better fit and finishthey write the same
You buy an eco, a 580 and two bottles of ink.
Q: Why should I buy a $25 item from Goulet, versus the same item at $17 on Amazon?
If price is the biggest factor, Amazon might be the way to go. There's some concerns with that though that Brian talks about in this other Q&A slice: ruclips.net/video/Wk_Cv5kxV9M/видео.html - Colin
I know this is a year later, but the TWSBI Eco is $32 on amazon.
