Eh, Car Wars was a ripoff of Mad Max. Everything has been done before. And I played a lot of Car Wars. As a game it was just OK. This game looks a hell of a lot cooler than pushing cardboard chits around.
@@Evil0tto Actually car war society isn't collapsing so not a mad max rip off also no petrol wars . I'd say its more a rip off of death race 2000 , pushing bit of card board around Games work shop "Battle cars"

a few months ago I discovered that a video game was made (back in 2018) and I've been enjoying the hell out of that just to relive memories of this game on tabletop.
Still got the box set with most of the figures. I converted a whole load of Matchbox toy cars into additional cars, some of the Matchbox American rigs into "battletrucks" or convoy vehicles to be protected. I also had most of the novels and was particularly impressed by making Elvis Pressley into a sanctioned op with a gunned up Cadillac and that he stayed on in the Army, rising to the rank of Colonel rather than pursuing a music career. Main complaint was the limited number of road sections so I ended up making more of my own to have a pre-set terrain rather than random roadway.
I got it as a Christmas present in 1988, and got another complete box about 10 years later. I also have all the White Dwarf magazines with the DF articles in them, and a copy of White Line Fever. Also had the box that had additional cars and motorcycles. Got a few of the metal figures and bikes, but they were kind of harder to track down here in Australia. Also have the novels, even the newer reprints. We did play it, but not as much as I'd have liked. Certainly not in the last couple decades. I think it's been played maybe twice in the last 20 years. 😢 Didn't stop me making up my own stuff. I made up intersections and the rules for them, and new weapon systems. Added additional hand weapons for pedestrians, and some new cybernetics. Even started writing a DF inspired novel, didn't get past an introduction. Would love to play it much more regularly, or even Gaslands, but neither seem to be popular around my area. There is still one website out there with custom content for DF, worth looking for. Can't remember the name of it atm.
Very strong drawing. My mind was blown away everytime i looked at this, back in the days. Never had it in the 80' s, but bought it in 2004. I never had the time to play it. 😢
Only played Dark future once. Still one of my favourite Ip's of GW. Carl Critchlows artwork was amazing. Something about it, like much of the early day 40k and Blood bowls from around issue 101 of White Dwarf.
BEST GAME EVER!,, I have 5 boxes of the game, 6 copies of the Whiteline fever with the hard cover sleeve, the WD issues with the extra articles and all the blisters with the bikes, driver and all the figures. I remember having Baltimore NA head office ship anything they had left to me. Great game
Great video! I remember the advert for this and seeing its tiny picture on the box of advanced Heroquest. It’s nice to see it now. But I would not have enjoyed it back then - as you say it looks complicated.
Awesome! I've always wanted to see this game. It is similar but way different to my game I published back in September. Interesting stuff, thanks for sharing!
The board game was before my time, but I have played the video game, which is quite fun. I have played Gaslands several times and kitbashed several cars for it. Good stuff! Thanks for showing us your collection.
And the fabric of reality starting to unravel. The main antagonist in a couple of the stories (Seth?), was implied that he was either a demon or an avatar for one of the chaos powers.
Never had the game , I saw it in the shops, etc, u even recently found some cars I had painted in the style of the game. They consisted of a blue camo with bullets from my Tank Command game mounted on top. If I remember rightly I ended up creating my own game from the idea, using some basic attack and defense stats. Other vehicles had spare weapons from my model kits mounted, notably aim9s which seemed to be on every kit
Played it the 80s in our gaming club in Derby. Happy times 😊 Think they even bought out GW fjgures to go with the game. Noticed the old style wargames terrain under the box too 😊
Good stuff, I love this game. I always wished that they would bring it back when the Mad Max movies came out. My copy is on a terrible state, but still one of my prized possessions.
Great memory! Loved that show, if only for the Coyote X. If I remember right, it was a low volume production car, but also available as a kit. Didn't they change the car in later series to some similar, maybe a Manta? Now I'm going to have to go check. 😂

@ I really only remember the show for that car. The Coyote X was definitely a rarity and I remember seeing one on the street once and the theme for the show got stuck in my head for a bit. I don’t think I ever saw another one off in real life though. Not sure if it did get replaced since I haven’t watched it in a few decades, but I love the intro and sometimes watch that on RUclips. I loved shows back then with memorable intros and vehicles
@@seanswader7425 I did a search, and lead to another video here on RUclips. Apparently it was custom designed and built for the show. First season it waa built on a VW Beetle chassis. Second and 3rd seasons it was built on a modified DMC Delorean. The original designed was inspired by the Manta Mirage.
Great review! A friend owned the game, but never got to play it. Still want to try, have to find the rules and make some roads for my Garlands cars. Anyone know how the dark future minis scales with dark alliance minis?
i play its spiritual successor, Gaslands, but io LOVE darek future, and i love the novels too, thats when GW forced Darkfuture into the 40k universe. i play the pc game too, i was never lucky enough to be able to own this one
Nostalgic moment! I probably spent about 100 hours painting and modifying cars for every 10 minutes actually playing the game.
Same here 😄.
That’s the best part though.
I remember this!! I used stare at the box in my local Games Workshop. Ended up playing it around a mates house.
1:40 This mail-in stuff was such a nice way to interact with customers; I really wish GW was like this still today
Great Game made even better with the addition of White Line Fever.
"Dark Future"(1988) was the games workshop knock off of Steve Jackson's "Car wars" (1980. Games work shop also produced "Battle cars"(1983)

I love that cover, a tiny rake in front of a Lemans type in the desert, that screams survival 😂
My first GW game,am now 50 and still painting and playing tabletop games.
I don't recall this game but it looks fun, seeing pages from White Dwarf gave me a nice nostalgia rush

I absolutely love this game, still have my original copy bought on release day, I also had that £5 voucher for being a runner up in WD Comp :)

It was implied (in the novels mainly) that it was in the 40k timeline, but never explicitly confirmed.

I got this many years ago from one of my local GW stores. Didn’t have a clue how to play it 😂
I really regret not buying dark future back in the day.

the game is out on steam on pc
White dwarf 93 first advertised the game, I loved this game
I would probably buy any game if one of the characters sent me a letter, discount or not. That is so cool!
