This was our first large hive removal of 2015. This is a good example of what you'll find in a hive that has been in a space for more than one season. Typically you can't be so careless in accessing the hive but this house is being torn down soon so the property owner was OK with any damage we had to do to get the bees out. They were more concerned about the safety of their children who had already been chased while riding their ATV.
I've been binge watching this channel all week. What fascinating little creatures.

I believe that is one of those jobs , where you want to make sure that you are up to date on tetnus shots
When you use a circular saw or a jig saw does that just piss off the bees more? 🐝😬
Surprisingly it doesn't seem to bother them too bad.
We rented a 9 room farm house for 10 years before my Dad past away and left me this house. All the rooms were 16 x 18 ft and the downstairs ceilings were 12 ft. tall. The house sat over 3 ft. off the ground. I explained all this because there was a bee hive for years in the kitchen ceiling. We just never used that room above it. We did not know the bees were there until we built a large puppy pen at that back corner of the house. Thankfully my Dad an ex- farmer was there when that hive swarmed onto the cherry tree in my puppy pen. It was like a couple of yours so big and heavy the limb was sagging halfway to the ground. I was scared to death for my three dogs that would walk. around the overhead swarm and lookup as if it were nothing. Well My Father who was a retired carpenter quickly made a box went to the tree and shook a 4 gallon bucket of bees into that wooden box he'd built. It was dark by the time he got home which was 63 miles away. The top was loose and although he was up at daybreak the box was empty. He was so happy about such a large swarm and very disappointed at the loss. They swarmed again a little over two weeks later again a large swarm. I called my feed store to get bee keepers but they wouldnt come get them and never even mentioned charging for them. These swarmed early morning and left by dark. This was about 1984 and perhaps bees were not really valued then. They all said that it must be a really large hive to have swarmed with such a volume of bees and so close together. They said the floor of that upper room would have to come up to get them. The doctor I rented from was not interested in getting the work done. His aunt had bought the farm in 1876 I think it was. It was 70 something lol. My Dad died a short while later and I moved here. We kept a close eye on that kitchen ceiling but never saw stains. My husband decided to dust 7 dust in the air to maybe run them away one evening because we were young and dumb. He was not trying to kill them he never stood on anything but the next morning after he did that there were dead bees everywhere. Had he wanted them dead he would have got on the ladder. My Father threw a fit. My husband was a very intelligent man with a good career. However bees were not his speciality lol.

Couple of things. First, you are a lucky guy to be able to hang out and work with your dad. Second, that was one nasty hive. It reminded me of one I did in an abandoned house. It was huge and queen less with a laying worker, only there was very little honey,just a ton of drones. Third, where did you get that knife. That thing is some kind of fine. I liked how it bent so easily. And finally, you are 100% correct when you explained the difficulty of cut outs. It's a great thing to do, but be prepared to work your butt off for very little profit. Jeff Horchoff That was a cheap bread knife my dad picked up somewhere. He bought two more the other day. Not sure where he's getting them.

If i do a cut out i think id bettet start on a junkie house first. So this would of been a good house. Dont matter to much if you mess up. Lol
My Dad and I were doing a cut out at a roofline next to a chimney once...I was holding the bee gum and he was transfering bees by the doublle handfulls until he bumped the top of the chimney and the handfulls fell down the shoot. In about 15 seconds every door of that house opened with people running out...I got down and went inside and they had shag carpet througgh out the house...lol

Rich Booth We came to Texas for the weekend and the Louisiana swamps were so beautiful with all the color. The crawfish are in season and the gators are out. It's definitely spring here.

when doing cut outs, Is it important to orient the brood nest comb in the same way it was in the hive when you tie it into frames or can you turn it 90 degrees to make this easier, faster, and less cutting the comb?
wildcat19671 The cells are built at about a 13 degree upward angle and it's best to keep them that way but I have placed them in the wrong way many times and they still take. I never really checked back to see how they corrected my mistake.

You guys do good work, so I'm guessing chances are good the colony would have died off in short order with the queen being mia. I'm still amazed at how it must sound and feel being in the mist of all those bees, today we had nice weather and the neighbors bees were pretty active so when they are flying around I'm just trying to get past the point where I don't swat at the buzzing sound. I even had a few land on me and I'm being nice and thinking don't sting me..lol Take care
Yep, they were dead and didn't know it. Maybe you can catch a swarm off your neighbor. lol
We watch and enjoy every Dirt Rooster Video you put on you tube. Our question is, What do you do with all of the Comb and honey you harvest from the hive removals? We never get to see you take the bees and comb back to where ever it is you bring them.

The siding on the house looks to be asbestos. Seen them many a time. Might want to start wearing breathing protection.
That is what it was. Lot of it around here. I don't fool with it much thankfully.
reelinhuntin- Does it take multiple exposures to cause issues or is one time enough to make someone very ill?
Also, does this mean that honey has been contaminated with asbestos because it was cut out around the hive?
The shingles are only dangerous if you break them and inhale the dust, that causes mesothelioma, a very specific kind of lung cancer
+Mashugina Would you know if the sleeves that the connections of electric and D C motors are placed in as well as the fiber that is cut and placed in the wiring slots as well as over the wiring has asbestos or used to? My now dead ex-husband was an electric AC or DC motor mechanic. He also had government contracts for ship wiring. I have often wondered about his work clothes having any of its dust. Back then I would sit with him for hours on a stool while he wound motors on overtime so i breathed alot of chemicals etc. when he stripped motors prior to wiring.them again. Even after we were married 14 years I would stay while he worked. Sadly I had to divorce him because he became an alcoholic. He also smoked 5 packs of cigarettes a day. He died in 2003 from liver failure. Although he had an excellent career reputation and photos of him standing inside government motors he rewound I don't think he was really happy being a motor mechanic. Neither of us ever remarried and that's why I admire Randy and his wife's marriage and good family life.
Just want to comment and say, I enjoy your videos. Lots of good clean entertainment, with plenty of bee info. Keep up the awesome job with these videos.. I know these things just don't get made by themselves.

The bees are lucky you came to get them when you did, with no queen and no brood the whole colony would have been dead soon. That would have been a whole lot of bees to go to waste. They still had plenty of work in them.

Only the men. The women just put up with it although my wife did help me move some nucs since i can't lift with my left arm right now.

Da fuq is that brittle cladding that you pulled off the walls. The timber boards behind that is what we call weather boards.
That was asbestos siding. It last forever but manufacture of it is outlawed now because it causes cancer.if you inhale the dust over long periods.

When you first started how many stings would it take to make you sick. How long before it stopped being a problem? If you were to do it again would you? Don't the stings hurt?
I would do it again. Took a few years before there was almost no effect. I never got sick. I don't even feel most of them.

hey Randy, quick question on the boxes.... could the boxes be oiled(eg. linseed) inside and out instead of painted?
Shane Villis I wouldn't do the inside but yes you could do the outside. I'm not sure how long it lasts but my ax has been in the bed of my truck for a month and the handle seems to be holding up well. Only a slight color change. I used boiled linseed oil on it when I replaced the handle.

I've really liked seeing these older videos where your Dad was more mobile and able to get around. Wish I had videos of my Dad that I lost almost 19 years ago, you've got a treasure trove worth of them. Bet it took me 5 years after he passed to get used to the idea that I couldn't talk to him about things even though I already knew the answer to what I was going to talk with him about. Thank You for your videos.
It's crazy how times have changed. He and I used to go jogging together. We ran about a mile and a half every few days. Now I might make a quarter mile and he can barely walk to his truck.
Where did you get that knife? I have a couple dozen cutouts under my belt so far, and need something similar.
It's just a cheap bread knife. I'm not sure where dad got it but it works pretty good. I usually use a fillet knife.
Question. Not related to the video tho. How do you keep ants out of ur hive? Their coming in cause of the top feeder. I installed my bees sunday. It's Wednesday now and I've cleaned dead ants out of the feed twice.
Granular poison on the ground for fire ants. I don't worry a whole lot about sugar ants.

It used to stay with me for a while but this one was completely gone in 24 hours.
i killed a huge hive behind a chimney one time . no bee keepers would come and take them ,no bee removal people in my area only exterminators , it was about 30 yrs ago . im considering starting my own removal company after these inspirational videos .
i didnt know anything about them or any other way to get rid of them . i swept up a 5 gallon bucket of dead ones of the ground , dont know how many died in the wall or the ceiling of the house .
Time to call the fire department, and do a controlled burn, so they can practice. The Value of that Property seemed to be the Land, not the Structures.

I've heard of some beekeepers that are allergic but still do it. Those guys have guts.

Are you melting down any of the comb that had wax moth damage? Im curious what kind of junk gets left behind by the moths.
It'll all go in the pot. All the trash is very easily separated and even the darkest wax comes out a nice yellow.
Kevin Thomas A solar wax melter makes the dirties brood comb wax look nice and shiny.
628DirtRooster What do you use your rendered beeswax for btw? I started making candles in my teens, every so often I make a batch now. We have a great friend, Ted the Candlemaker, who has a great wee business in the Borders here in the UK, making a wide range of candles. His beeswax candles smell heavenly, I'm sure your beeswax does too once it's rendered and clean!

Good question. Most of the time they will make a new queen. If they can't I'll add one unless it's fall or winter and I'll merge them with another colony.

If they were going to just demo the house and the bees were only on the outside. Why didn’t they just leave the hive alone, they probably wouldn’t have been bothered by the bees. But at least you made a few bucks....but it never seems like you make enough for all your hard work. Love the channel and Videos Randy👍👍

Ok I have some dumb questions. 1 why is old comb black? 2. Where does a bee poop? 3. Is the fact that your bee veil is camouflaged a fashion statement or can they really not see you while wearing it? 😬
Bees poop outside the hive, usually on my truck. The camo was in my truck from hunting season but the bees seem to think it's an actual tree. The older comb gets the darker it gets after bees track everything they bring in across it and brood cycles run through it.

why can't you use the large opening to the vac? It seems like it would take longer with the smaller opening.
Small tip pulls them in easier and immediately reduces their speed when they get to the larger section of hose so they down't get beat up so bad.

Is there any concern that you could develop a bee allergy? When you're having swelling following a sting concerns me. Because it is possible to get a life threatening allergy when you are stung, even though you have had so many.
No concern. A decade of stings and they have less effect than ever.
@@628DirtRooster Hopefully you have developed a immunity to them. Just watch out for a change in your reaction.

You all get called out to some busted old places. They love that eyebrow. Great advice at the end. When you get stung 15 times per cutout does the venom have less of an effect? When I get stung it smarts for a minute, that's ok. Swells for two days, that's ok. But it itches something fierce for a week. You still get itching? Thanks for making the video.
We do still get some itching but it is very much reduced. A sting may itch for a couple of hours and all swelling is gone in a day. When I first started this I would swell and itch just like a regular mortal. LOL

man iv been watching a lot of your vids always been intrigued by bees, been thinking about keeping them just dont know if my climate is suitable i saw this type of birdhouse beekeepers box that had a tap and when you turned it it would unhinge the combs and honey would flow, and then turn it again and it was an empty comb i know bees would be good for my garden
You can keep bees just about anywhere in the world. Don't waste your money on the bird house "Flow Hive".
+628DirtRooster that 'bird house' hive is ok but a bit gimmicky. I've started using poly nucs for overwintering. Can't comment on them yet as this'll be my first winter coming up. Seems like a good idea though....time will tell, like the Flowhive 😉

I've seen some videos of the FlowHives in action. I'm STILL not entirely sure what I think of them. Keep in mind, I am NOT a bee keeper but I've wanted to have a hive or two for a few years now and this winter I've been getting serious about it and I'll be going to my first meeting this month. What I don't understand about the FlowHive is the honey is drained without uncapping the honey... So how long does it take the bees to figure out there is no longer honey behind those cappings and how much extra time does it REALLY take for them to clear all those caps out, refill everything and recap it? I'm guessing not very long as bees are amazing, resourceful and super intelligent. I just wonder if it's done at the WRONG time of year, will they die due to all the extra work needed to replace the honey and not enough time? Of course, I know the bees can be fed, but I'm sure not ALL bee keepers keep track of their hives the way others do. Thankfully, I will have a mentor at least my first year so I don't get bees and somehow kill them off in a month. LOL That would devastate me as I LOVE honey bees and do animal rescue and I try to help, not harm any creatures I take into my care.

@628dirtrooster I know this is an old video, but I had a question. If the house was going to be demo'd anyway, why did they call you? Was it to protect the people who would be knocking it over, or was it for the love of bees? Thank you so much for your videos. I really want to go along with a bee keeper and watch them capture a wild swarm or remove a hive. I've discovered there are several bee keeper orgs in my city!
+moodring42 They didn't want to get attacked when the were tearing it down. I'd bet it's still standing though. There was a lot of junk in there.
