Three years ago, I realised I needed an answer to a BIG QUESTION before I could even consider starting to teach the flute on the internet.
And it was the basic, but serious: "Can someone learn the flute online effectively?"
So, in a nutshell, I tried it out and got some pretty startling results. To be honest, I got feedback that I could only have dreamed of.
In this video, I read you what I wrote down about the experience, and what I discovered. It wasn't really what I expected...

this is so helpful and encouraging. I'm already a musician, but I've decided to take up the flute by self-teaching it. I've done research, and started yesterday, and It's hard, but so far I'm liking it. I found your channel just now and watch a couple more videos: very informative and useful! I have so many doubts, though, and that's probably the main downside of not having a teacher: you have no-one to ask questions to

Hi Nash- that's so great that you've started teaching yourself the flute! There's so many free videos on RUclips so go for it :) The more you understand the fundamental concepts of playing the flute (especially embouchure), the easier it will be for you to learn by yourself. Jane x

When I think back about teaching myself piano and composition (as well as other instruments) when I was growing up "before the internet", I wonder how my progress would be different if I had the resources available then that kids have nowadays. I think that what we're going to see from this generation's kids is going to be astonishing!

Hi Grace, I also think it's amazing that I can send my students a RUclips recording of their piece to help them learn it when I had to go out and buy a CD to hear my piece as a student!

I'm brand new at this! I'm a retired tenor with an extensive musical background. I've worked on learning to play brass and that is still a work in progress. I know how to do instrument repair and setup and I've just restored a flute for myself! So far, I've discovered that I can make a great sound on the head joint, I can get good low notes , to a point. It's me not the flute😂 BUT the toughest thing is keeping everything in line when I hold the flute! Moving one finger seems to knock everything out of kilter! Anyway, this is literally my third day and I'm making imrovements! Carnegie Hall wasn't built in a day! LoL! I've sung there but I'll never play flute there!😂

Feedback is possible online too, with zoom streaming classes etc, because of coronavirus this was and is the teaching method in schools ,where they weren't allowed to open schools for students. You don't need to just watch youtube tutorials today.

Hey there, yes I was in the same boat during lockdown - my real-life school lessons turned into Zoom lessons. It was good for the students to keep the lessons going during lockdown! And you're right - lots of flute teachers offer Zoom lessons, which is great.
