  • Shodai Ware is one of the most representative types of pottery from the Kyushu region originating near the base of Mt. Shodai in Kumamoto Prefecture during the early Edo Period some 400 years ago, a tradition with continues to this day. This type of pottery crafted using ancient techniques and a unique type of clay native to Mt. Shodai waned in popularity for some time before undergoing a revival once again during the early Showa Period, and the tradition is now carried on to this very day by seven local potters from the Arao Region.
This style of ceramics is crafted using the rich clay native to Mt. Shodai and is infused with the unique glaze of each individual potter for beautiful deep, rich hues. In this video our presenter Sam heads to Arao to get an inside look at what makes Shodai Ware so special.
