      Dude this goddamn game was a recurring obsession from the age of 4 - about 16 when my og gameboy finally died. same save, never colour and never finished. so hard to play, hard to see and hard to replace. loved it and hated it like no other game.

    I love it when companies aren't afraid to branch out and do silly things. I think Nintendo experimented a lot more with the GameBoy because it had no competitors, so it didn't matter if the games weren't as refined, they could experiment, and they made some great games because of that.
    And Rare's constant demolishing on the 4th wall, perfect.

    Well said. I had Land 2 (no clue where I got it) when I was younger and actually played it before Country 2. I liked it, but it's still a watered-down version of the superior title. Plus, Land 2 was extremely close to the original, while Land 1 did an all-new thing.
    That being said, MAN if Land 1 isn't irritating. I grabbed it on the eShop and was ready to throw my system a few times. The controls aren't precise, enemies and pits appear immediately because the screen barely shows anything, and that darn cloud platform level made me tear my hair out. It's not an awful game, but it was certainly limited by the Game Boy.

    • @GeekCritique
      @GeekCritique  9 лет назад +10

      Ben Stegner I had Land 1 when I was a kid, but it put me off the series. I got Land III a few years later at the same time as the Game Boy Pocket, and enjoyed it a lot more. Then I _finally_ got Land 2 just last year, to play on the RetroN 5, haha.
      Gah, that cloud platform level... sorry if I have to turn in my gamer card, but I don't think I'd have EVER done it without savestates. I'm sure I _could_ do it, I just wouldn't want to.
      I'd never beaten Land 2 or III (isn't that nomenclature weird?), but I'm further along in 2 than I've ever been, playing on the 3DS. It's very solid for the Game Boy, but how in the world did anybody beat Target Terror on the old blurry screen? That's the roller coaster stage where you have to hit check barrels and avoid X barrels to open doors. But even on the 3DS, I have trouble telling them apart.

    • @kitty-xk3xx
      @kitty-xk3xx 9 лет назад +1

      Ben Stegner I played Land 2 a few weeks ago from the eShop and honestly, I loved it. It's one of the best games I played on there, and easily my favorite of the DKC handheld games. The level design is just really solid, the bosses are fun despite being very watered down, and the music is great.

    I couldn't disagree more. Donkey Kong Land is by far the best of the gameboy trilogy. It had original levels and felt like a unique game, whereas its sequels were more or less typical mediocre ports with cut/less content than its home console counterparts.

    • @klaymodopostoffice9885
      @klaymodopostoffice9885 Год назад +1

      Donkey Kong Land was amazing and certainly the most original, but the two sequels were still terrific Game Boy platformers in their own right. For instance, they had the smoothest gameplay I ever saw in a GB platformer, and some of the best music on the system.

    I was born in 85’ and as a result; I grew up at the perfect time to be immersed in the 16-bit era, and as a Genesis owner I was always insanely jealous of super Nintendo owners and wanted to be on that side so bad but I didn’t have the means to buy one until few years later. The first Nintendo system that I got besides the NES was a translucent clear Game Boy during the PlayItLoud era, in my two favorite games on that system or links awakening and donkey Kong land two. The yellow cartridge was really special to me because I was really into that sort of thing: alternate colors for game systems.
    By the late 90s I was finally able to buy a super Nintendo after I getting an N64 and I collected all the best games for each but I’ll never forget the original game boy and some of the games like DKL that made me feel like I was finally on team Nintendo.
    Nowadays I can afford what I want but it was strangely comforting to have to pick a side back then when you were just a kid with no money.

    You know, I am kind of amazed. I got DKL2 the year it came out, for my gameboy pocket. I was obsessed with it, I played it every single day. The game wasn't even in color but it completely captivated my imagination. The motion blur is far worse than the video shows if you're playing on original hardware, and it was absolutely horrendous on the green screen gameboys, especially the first DKL. The best way to play these is on the super gameboy/snes and CRT television if you have one, but I'm sure the downloadable rereleases are cleaner looking too. Donkey Kong is probably my favorite series, the snes trilogy is ultimate but I will always love the gameboy ones, Rare pushed the gameboy to it's limits for sure.

    All I remember about this "Land" trilogy, was that it was virtually unplayable on the original Game Boy, mostly due to the screen's ghosting. The only way to get some enjoyment out of them, was to play them on a GBC (or higher).

    It was so attractive to have such a mini-format "high-class" game. Actually, although there are vastly better opportunities, thinking about this it still can create that feeling for some reason (I don't own it and don't remember playing it, but I can imagine).

    Third time watching and I have to agree with you on DKL. I picked it up a little while ago being a very big fan of DKC and I agree with everything you said. I 100%'d this game legitimately as a kid and i can honestly say that finding all of the secrets was a huge endeavor. A lot secrets are invisible meaning you just had to touch the right part of a screen to be whisked away to a secret room. Sometimes there was a barrel to reach, sometimes it was literally nothing and you just got lucky haha

    The big issue with the original DKL was that the screen was too small, and so there were more than a few blind jumps, but it is definitely the best DKL game because of the unique level design (abstract art in the clouds being my favorite) and great music.

    I disagree. The level design in DKL2 and DKLIII was repetitive and the gimmicks in them uninteresting. DKL, despite having odd graphical issues and a wonky camera at times, at least had great level design, unique and fun gimmicks for each one, and made its own mark in the franchise with its own archetypes and enemies. DKL is the better game, it's not without problems, but I'd much rather sit down with it than DKL2 or 3.

    The original compositions in DKL by David Wise are really nifty. They fit in well with the DKC soundscape, and are surprisingly memorable. In fact, it's a bummer none of them ended up on 16-bit software. And the fact that DKL2 and DKL3 had no original compositions is a bigger bummer.
    Graeme Norgate also composed some great tracks for the game, but they don't fit in with the DKC soundscape.

    • @GeekCritique
      @GeekCritique  6 лет назад +1

      Never heard of Animusic! The video came from here: ruclips.net/video/ENIbCrVc8uk/видео.html
      The problem with Big Ape City becoming New Donk City is that Big Ape City is very firmly somewhere proximate to Donkey Kong Island. Mario Odyssey's map doesn't show that. But with the Returns era changing the whole look of the island, I guess anything's possible! Odyssey definitely leans hard in that direction.

    • @dprototype6431
      @dprototype6431 6 лет назад

      I posted that comment before I watched the video, but Animusic was this music video series about musical instruments that played themselves, much like Colby's video.
      Considering how wild and inconsistent the Mario universe's geography is, I guess it could be possible that they're the same location. I'm kinda surprised DK Island wasn't even mentioned in passing in Odyssey, same with Sarsaland.

      Sadly, there's no way to make the sprites and background different colors on the eShop versions. You can switch between black and white "Game Boy Pocket" style, which is the default, or a black and green "DMG Game Boy" style.

    Ich liebte DKLand da ich kein SNES hatte und zockte es auf dem originalen Gameboy .Die Grafik machte kein Problem für mich

    I wonder why so many Game Boy platformers have Land in the title
    Also is the plot for DKL 2 & 3 the same as DKC 2 & 3 because you didn’t talk about it

    DKL had no minecart levels, which automatically made it superior, and a much more forgiving save system. Also, best music in the series.

    The DKL version of "Gangplank Galleon" was superior to the DKC version. I will not accept otherwise.

    No mention that the original DKC assets were lost, so they had to remake the game from scratch, thus liberties were taken?

    Those are actually pretty good graphics for the original Gameboy.

    So I got DK Land 1 before I saw this review but....well I still dont care. I had $5 in credit and wanted to play them in order. I am a die hard DK fan. Have been since SNES. A good way to make sure you can beat this game is to redo the 1st lvl anytime you are low on lives. Make sure to memorize the lvl (you will anyways). Memorize it and get 2-3 lives per playthrough The 1st level is short enough so you will be able to get good and get extra lives.. that's how I plan to beat the game. The Black and White only colors are a B*TCH and I wish Nintendo would have made these games with the colors you see in the GBC but it is what it is. $3.99 I really cant ask for much. I do not regret this purchase and I am now on World 3. I will beat them damn it! ALL OF THEM! >:D

      These games came out before the GBC (except for the Japanese version of DK Land 3). The Game Boy Color just uses a default palette for Gameboy games, but you can change the palette as seen here: imgur.com/jZUXMp2 (this also works on a GBA running GB games).
      If you would like the play the DK Land series in color in a way they were designed for, you can play them on an SNES with a Super Game Boy. If you don't mind giving up the portable aspect of these games, this is definitely the best way to play them.

    FU? DKL1 was great on the game boy!
    I think those where the best GFX for a gameboygame. (Suggestions of games with better GFX than DK always welcome)
    No other game was so sofistacted.
    I did not had snes and i was happy i could play the kongs.
    Only good memory on that yellow cartridge.

    Yeah the DKL games are unplayable on an OG Gameboy. Thankfully there were SGB and GB Pocket.

    reason gameboy games where more creative.
    because they where made by a different team.. one backed by the creator of gameboy... who ended up inventing wario
