Your flutter kick wasn't doing anything, lots of movement of the limbs no propulsion, equals wasted energy. Also cools you down if it is cold. Also, very few people equipped with wetsuit and goggles care about doggie, and they give you extra bouyancy which is the very thing people are fighting in doggie, not realistic. If anything you should demo strokes in regular clothes to see what works when people end up in the water, or in normal bathing suits, for strokes at the weak end of the spectrum. Doggie gets serious if people fall into cold water, because all that slick swimming where our heads are perfectly immersed has a huge survival cost. Nobody talks about what it takes to survive in almost all the fresh water in the world (mostly damn cold), and any of the colder salt water.
