My old job had a monster planer from SCMI, 20” or 24”. It had an infeed roller with ridges...the only time it left them in the wood after planing, was only when you needed to take off like a 1/16 “or 1/32”. Anything a love that was fine.
Thanks goodness got the giant wide belt machine he had :)

It does seem like it leaves ridges on the thinner cuts mostly. More sanding which I really don’t like since I sold my performax drum sander.

@@tupelowoodcarver1785 smart! I bought a used performax for $900. Looked barely used...a nightmare! Getting rid of this pos as soon as I get a different one. 2 new belts, either track right, inner head is lower then outer head, a bolt just snapped.
Heard good things about the grizzly double drum but I might just go with the powermatic. Buy once, cry once lol

I can breath a little easier, Just watched you review on the table saw (which I have), and ordered this planer with the segmented head about a month ago (still waiting). Glad you like it!

Yes I’ve been using my planer a lot lately and other than blade sharpening I haven’t had to do anything else.
You’ll love the spiral cutter..it will give you really good finishes in figured woods as well.
      Enjoy. :)

Glad to hear your experience with this has been better than with the Table Saw...the only Grizzly tool I've bought so far is my old G0452 6" jointer, and I got that for Christmas in 2008. My woodworking has been off and on over the years but I've run quite a bit of wood through it.
Other than normal stuff like getting knives sharpened and making adjustments, the only things I've had to replace were the plug (a couple times) and the belt (kinda like you mentioned, it's not the best belt). Those were easy/cheap fixes though and it's served me extremely well! I do eventually want to upgrade to a bigger jointer, though (like an 8 or a 12 maybe).
By the way, when you do need to replace the belt, get one of Grizzly's red v-belts...the original belt only lasted a year or two but the v-belt is adjustable and it's still in great shape over a decade later!

I have a Jet 6” jointer. I replaced the original knives with a helical head. It has served me for over 20 years, and the helical head takes the toughest of grain and comes out like silk.
I wish it was a 8”…that’s the only complaint I would have in 20 years.

My grizzly 15” has the spiral head and honestly it gives good finish but it leaves tracks from the carbide knives. Which makes it so annoying because they are hard to see. Sanding off takes awhile. So maybe good you got straight knives. My Byrd shelix head for my jointer never leaves tracks. Mine leaks oil also. Does yours? I’ve had mine for 15 years or so.

I outfitted my old Jet six inch jointer with a Shelix head years ago, and it leaves a great finish. In fact, I’ve never even changed the cutters in over 10 years. I usually only edge joint on that machine though.
Mine leaked oil through the shift knob. The seal was shot upon arrival, and Grizzly sent a new gasket kit, and after changing the gaskets, it hasn’t leaked since.
The cutter heads on yours are probably not as close together as a better made head, but It’s just a guess.

How do you calibrate it? What tools do you use?

I used a dial gauge with magnetic base, but I’ve used feeler gauges with blocks of wood or a machined piece of metal before.
I got the dial indicator with magnetic base from harbor freight.

Curious as to what brand roller base you have on this planer? Is it the Grizzly one on their site? Just curious! Thanks for the reviews man!!

It’s a Grizzly mobile base. I have several of these bases on my machines, and they have worked out great with no complaints.
      Thanks
