One of the best interviews DirtFish has put out. It was interesting to hear more about the sport as a whole and not just questions about whichever rally is currently taking place. Would definitely want to see more like this.
A very good interview with Elfyn and it's always nice to hear WRC drivers speak - these guys are some of the most honest and down to earth characters I have come across in motorsports. As an avid follower of F1 for that last 25 years, I like to turn to WRC for its no non-sense made up glamour drama (drive to survive) BS and there is no shame in the lack of advertising when compared to the liberty media circus. The sort of driving these guys do is just pure magic - considering the terrain, elements, the cars and all against the clock.
fantastic interview, dirtfish carrying rally media as always. shame they cant just get a big promoter deal. the quality between this and wrc is night and day
Forestry commission, natural resources Wales. That's why. It's too expensive to run the event and with no government help it's just not financially viable to run a wrc event in the UK. People don't understand the work that goes in.
@@seanperks2702 Plenty of local rallys take place every year in Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales though. How can small local organizations manage it at the same scale and stage quality? Doesn't make sense.
Excellent interview Elfyn, very honest and matter of fact....I'm sure there isn't any rest these days, I think today would be more suited to Burns than McRae. British rallying needs serious investment. If you look at Irish rallying every 2nd weekend there is 140 cars out somewhere there...but as Elfyn mentioned there is no real structure. Many classes from R5 (usually successful business guys, to many modified classes to a junior class.) The UK has great forest network plus tarmac roads on par with Ireland. Unfortunately I think the UK there seems to be to much bureaucracy from every council. Insurance is another area of concern The UK should be one of the largest rallying nations unfortunately like Elfyn, once each generation passes the stories disappear, and so the dream, as other nations take on the mantle.
Yes, a lot of the people in UK rallying just want to do 45 mile one day events. There aren't enough who want to do more - and these longer events cost a lot more.
It's bad enough not having Rally GB In the WRC, but the real loss is not having the event running at all, even as a National event. Other WRC events can survive whether they're in the WRC or not. If you'd have told me 20+ years ago that there would be no Lombard/ Network Q RAC Rally, I'd have thought you were insane.
Introduction of hybrid has been a backwards step for the WRC. The cars are way too expensive, too heavy, and have to be driven in a certain way (especially in gravel) to extract the benefits of the hybrid (early braking without locking up the wheels to get any sort of kinetic energy recovery). We need to ditch the expensive hybrid systems and base the top flight WRC cars on a rally2+ type car with slightly more aero and MUCH more noise. Championship should use, promote and develop sustainable fuels and WRC/FIA need a kick up the backside to improve the promotion of rallying before it fizzles out.. we should look at other forms of motorsport e.g. WEC and maybe f1 to understand why and how these are so successful. …oh and maybe drop the current tyre manufacturer 😜
It has caused many fails. I think tyres have been caught out and transmission, eg driveshafts. The extra power snaps on and tears the tread off tyres etc.. Hybrid power on needs a bit of software ramping up on maybe.
So, if WRC2 cars are the big solution for the sport, why isnt everyone watching WRC2 then? And if ICE and Hatchbacks are shrinking markets, with the WRC losing marketing appeal, what exactly do they solve, except for the running costs. And with Rally1, F1 and WEC being prototype series, what are the others doing better? The first thing I can think of surely isnt cost savings, its marketing appeal and accessability, and both series show, that the manufacturers have money to spend if those things are a given. With WRC2+ for example, would Ford even have a base chassis for the next homologation cycle, now that the Fiesta is gone?
@@huwzebediahthomas9193the new tyres are rubbish especially this year. We had sone new 2023 tyres for the Safari and every single one punctured in a single day. The two year old ones we used the other days were fine. And that’s running at the back in an Evo X.
I miss rally gb with service up in Velindre and stages just up the Rd. Could really get close to the drivers. It was a real buzz.. Now that's gone gutted

Always rooting for this guy, our best hope for a British champion. Keep your head up boyo! 🏴🇬🇧

I'd love DirtFish to sit down with David Richards/MSA UK and put these Questions to him and find out why rallying is in this current state.

He deserves to win the championship
He had the chance couple of years ago, he crast.
I hope Evans will win more rallys, in good day hes wery fast.
Great interview, still makes me angry how little sports news coverage WRC gets
Thanks David and Dirtfish!!

As always with the UK it's either we're skint or tight fisted
Great content.

Elfin Evans, the only Welshman to fly the British flag with pride as embarrassing as Gwyndaf.
I’m sure he would fly the Welsh flag, but scrutineers don’t allow it.
