    at 5:10 you ask "I don't even know how these fish got in here". It's been proven that fish get to new bodies of water by hitching a ride with birds. When birds walk along shallow water during spawn season, sometimes an egg sticks to the leg of the bird and then well you can guess the rest.

    They might seem sickish because of the lack of salt in the water. Tarpinare primarily found in saltwater, but also range into freshwater

    • @philipstephan5451
      @philipstephan5451 9 месяцев назад

      Also im not sure if this one is a catch pond but when these ponds are catch ponds for storm run off water inevitably there is all kinds of pollution, motor oil, anti-freeze and many others that can make these fish sick. Dont ever eat any fish caught out of a storm catch pond. That tarpon is not active possibly because of lack of oxygen. Lack of fountain.

  • @jaratt85
    @jaratt85 2 года назад +143

    That fish isn't doing well, typically I'd say those are good to eat but living in that pond obviously isn't healthy for him.. He probably needs back to some brackish/salt water and is dying from a lack of salt. You really should catch him and take him out to a proper waterway and let him go.. it's not like releasing an invasive species, that's native.. take it and let it go where it should be in a river that connects to the ocean.

    • @Rodentfisherman

They are not simple or easy to catch or prepare for eating. They may not taste too bad, however, their smell and a large number of bones, make it a less than enjoyable fish to eat."
      And those aren't tarpon, they are snakehead and clown knifefish... very different fish.

    A little research and this isn’t an unusual place for the tarpon to be. They will seek out freshwater at a point in their lives (not all of them, but it is common with the species. They can live in brackish water, salt water and even freshwater. It can have low O2 levels where they can be lethargic, but they also have a swim bladder that doubles as a pseudo lung. The reason you saw the fish come to the surface, briefly pop it’s head out then turn and flash each time is because it is breathing air!!! This gives them a short period where they will have more energy.
    The tarpon in there can survive well on all of the small bait within the pond. It’s likely it can still get back out to the sea, but often they get landlocked because they grow bigger than when they arrived and don’t fit in the space they came through originally.
    Although the ditch/pipe/canal and water retention pond are may made, the fish is living out a natural phase of its lifecycle.

The nearest large body of water was 45 - 60 miles away and some of the fish that were found were not even native to the area. It is a total waste of fish resources, sadly.

    Over here in the UK, if the weather is hot the fish tend to feed earlier or later in the day when it begins cooling off & sunbath on the surface during hot sunny weather. They might take some surface bait but are more likely to just slowly swim around the surface. As you mentioned at the start, the weather is hot when you recorded your video so he may have been sunbathing & taking a bite when he has to put little effort in. It is sad to se fish living in sewers & small natural “ponds” when they are subject to garbage & start to out grow the space they are in.

    • @Becka.M-D
      @Becka.M-D 2 года назад

      @Magnolia Promotions I have been lucky where I live to not have come across lakes with garbage in them. When fishing, if any fisherman or woman has been fishing & come across any rubbish or sink or very injured fish or animals in or around our lakes, we make sure that it is cleared up & reported. But we always clean up when we leave after a fishing session & treat any fish we catch. It is disheartening when we see or hear of any place that is treated as a garbage pit or polluted, causing any animal or human harm no matter where in the world that may be.
