A few years ago an airline (I think RyanAir?) was caught using software to split up families/groups - they were charging extra for assigned (instead of random) seats and intentionally split people up as an incentive to pay more. Brady Haran had a similar experience he shared on his podcast: he and his wife took a flight and ended up seated in different rows, but it turned out the man he was sitting next to was married to the woman his wife was sitting next to... so they were also able to swap seats.

    • @scragar
      @scragar 7 месяцев назад +58

I think they got in trouble for splitting up kids and parents which is where this all came to light.
Can you imagine getting your tickets and realising they expect a 5 year old to sit on their own far away from the rest of the family. It's just dumb.
I believe at least in Europe the law now says kids must be in a near by seat to an adult travelling with them, but I believe that does also mean you could be on the seat in front or behind the kid rather than always next to them.

@@scragarYou are partially correct. By European law, one family member that is capable to taking care of the child has to sit next to them. So even an 18 year-old sibling would be sufficient. Also only until the child is 15 years old. Children 15 and older can sit alone.
Check-in agents will usually try to seat family together. If it's not possible, children then are seated next to women.

A similar thing happened to me last night! I accidentally sat in the wrong seat on a plane (we are a family of 4, and sat in the middle row with them on an A330, without realising I was allocated a window side seat, not the centre aisle seat). The gentleman asked me if I was sitting in the wrong seat, if we were a group of 4 and which was my correct seat. Last year on a family holiday, my family and I were split up because we were late checking in to the flight. It ended up that I and my sister were going to be sitting on separate rows next to strangers, but the people who were meant to be sitting next to me, didn't show up. So I had a row completely to myself, and invited my sister to also sit in my row.

I don't mind swapping seats if it's the same type of seat. But sometimes if I've specially booked an aisle seat (which has sometimes necessitated me getting up in the middle of the night in order to do it at the earliest possible time), and then someone has asked me to move from an aisle seat to a middle seat, I'm not going to move. Also sometimes someone is sitting in your seat in a plane and they just refuse to move, because they want the aisle seat so badly. That happened to me last time.

This is one that happened to me, personally. I am the stranger in this story.
I guy drives to the grocery store, grabs some stuff than as he reaches for his wallet he realizes that he'd left it at home.
He explains that he'd forgot his wallet and would have to drive home to get. He would be back in about 15 minutes.
As he pulls into his driveway he sees another car park in front of his house on the street.
This is not all that unusually, the guy across the street runs a small business out of his home and strangers are always coming and going. He doesn't really care, the callers never bother him. Only this time, it turns out that the caller is there to see him.
As he climbs out of his car the stranger gets out of his car. The stranger, who he'd never seen before calls out his name then says, "Let me guess. You just came from (grocery store's name) but you had to come home because you forgot your wallet.
Astonished he asks the stranger, "How the hell do you know that?"
How did I know the stranger's name, that he had gone to (grocery store's name) and forgot his wallet?
    Scroll down.
I answered his question, "Because you didn't for get your wallet. You dropped it getting out of your car."
The look on the guys face as I handed him his wallet is something I will treasure forever.
I'd found the wallet in the parking lot, sitting on the ground under the driver's door. I'd recognized his car as the one next to the wallet.
Inside the wallet was about $250 and his driver's license, where I got the name and address of the owner of the wallet. I recognized him from his driver's license picture, so I called out his name and, as he was coming home without his wallet, I knew he'd think he'd left it at home.
He did offer me a reward ($100) and though I could have used that money I turned it down. I said if he rewarded me, it wouldn't be a good deed. I said, "Just pay it forward."
The part about about the small business was made up to give the guy a reason not to be concerned about a stranger parking in front of his house. He was ignoring me until I called out his name.

I have, apparently, inherited my father's voice (and some of his vocal mannerisms).
I was visiting Dad one day when my daughter (interstate, nowhere near) called to speak to Dad on his landline (old people!).
The conversation carried on for a short while when Dad realised that he had to pick up something in the next room, and, without saying anything, gave the phone to me.
My daughter who had been speaking then asked a question.
Given that I'd heard Dad's side of the call, I simply carried on the conversation - whereupon I realised that she didn't realise that it wasn't Grandpa that she was talking to.
We conversed for a few more minutes when Dad came back into the room, whereupon I burst out laughing, handing the phone back to him.
He then had to explain what had happened to a mildly confused (and disgruntled) granddaughter.
    Fun times. 😄

The truth about phones on planes has nothing to do with aircraft safety. Phones and airplane radios work an vastly different frequencies.
You want to put your phone in airplane mode, for two reasons. In the climb out and decent the airplane is going so fast it moves into and out of range to cell towers very rapidly. This means your phone will be switching from one cell tower to the next ever few seconds. This can damage your phone.
Eventually the plane climes high enough that it is too high for your phone to connect with any tower. It keeps trying to find a signal, and this will rapidly drain the batter.

It still sounds weird why would the wife want to talk to Chris? She could just say to her husband, hey just come back to my seat you will switch places with girl next to me and we can fly together...

But doesn't this mean that either Chris, or the other couple, had reserved seats that are far apart even when there had been empty adjacent seats on the plane? They can't have both reserved the only free seats right? Sounds bit fishy.

Someone may have cancelled their ticket, or moved their reservation.

What if Chris was just looking forward to a few hours of alone time because his wife talks a lot all the time?

Unless... And this is just me being cynically funny. Chris intentionally booked a seat separate from his wife bc he wanted a break from her while on the plane. Lol😅

Ladies asdumed that this call made Chris's flight more pleasant. Who knows if it ruined the flight of Chris and the stranger who was in the next seat.
    Just sayin. 😁😁

I'm not the Chris from the question, but I have the same name, and I have another possible answer for you: Chris doesn't own a phone. :) I've had some bizarre situations caused by someone desperately trying to contact me (funnily enough, I usually don't care so much about being contacted... that's why I don't have a phone in the first place), and it wouldn't even surprise me if someone handed me a phone like that.
Side note: The question was very carefully worded so we don't know whether Chris is a guy or a gal. No pronouns. Was that at all significant?

And so Chris and stranger's nice quiet flight to Italy was ruined because they now had to sit next to their wives. Chris and stranger were going to talk about mountain biking and hunting and fishing and cars, but it wasn't to be.

I thought it was a creative form of proselytizing where some religious person would get on a plane, get a phone call, and then hand it to a stranger and the caller would be someone saying: "Do you have a moment to talk about our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ?"
