This was the first performance of Bolero under Maestro Celibidache. I was the principal bassoonist. Celibidache did not allow any dress rehearsal with the recording team. It was a Sunday morning at 11 a.m. We started playing and the recording team individually added a spot-light onto each soloist. When I started my solo, the spotlight was in my eyes and I could not see the conductor any more; this was totally unexpected since there was no dress rehearsal. This and many other stories and events are in my book, 17 years as principal bassoonist under principal conductor Sergiu Celibidache. The book, only in Japanese, is sold out. In my opinion Celi's best boléro is the one with the Danish Radio Symphony. It's on RUclips and probably the most fous video of Boléro on the platform.
Now that is the way you conduct the Bolero. He was throwing thunderbolts up at the horns. His hair coming all undone; sweat flying. By 18 minutes he was a mess LOL. Beautiful performance.
I saw and heard Celibidache conducting live on 9 of the 99 times that he conducted in Spain, including Bruckner's Seventh, Third (twice), Fourth and Eighth Symphonies. His Bruckner was like no other and attending a concert by him was always a very special occasion. I must say, however, that not once on those nine occasions did he drive me to tears, something which has happened to me with other conductors (Eliahu Inbal, Zubin Mehta, Gary Bertini, Gennadi Rozhdestvensky, Rafael Frühbeck, Lorin Maazel, Josep Pons, Pedro Halffter, just to name a few).
I encourage you to visit Ravel's Bolero (Celibidache) 1971 !! "HE FINDS HIS "FREEDOM" as he has said during interview occasions. Personally, I visit that performance every day to enhance my willingness to what the day will bring during these troubling times.
Towards the end it gave me giggles of excitement in my throat! This performance with all that were involved in rendering it, touched my soul just like they were tickling the cords of the violins :). Just magical!
From Wikipedia: The tempo indication in the score is Tempo di Bolero, moderato assai ("tempo of a bolero, very moderate"). In Ravel's own copy of the score, the printed metronome mark of 76 per quarter is crossed out and 66 is substituted.[13] Later editions of the score suggest a tempo of 72.[13] Ravel's own recording from January 1930 starts at around 66 per quarter, slightly slowing down later on to 60-63.[6] Its total duration is 15 minutes 50 seconds.[13] Coppola's first recording, at which Ravel was present, has a similar duration of 15 minutes 40 seconds.[13] Ravel said in an interview with the Daily Telegraph that the piece lasts 17 minutes.[14] An average performance will last in the area of fifteen minutes, with the slowest recordings, such as that by Ravel's associate Pedro de Freitas Branco, extending well over 18 minutes[13] and the fastest, such as Leopold Stokowski's 1940 recording with the All American Youth Orchestra, approaching 12 minutes.[15] At Coppola's first recording Ravel indicated strongly that he preferred a steady tempo, criticizing the conductor for getting faster at the end of the work. According to Coppola's own report:[16] Maurice Ravel [...] did not have confidence in me for the Boléro. He was afraid that my Mediterranean temperament would overtake me, and that I would rush the tempo. I assembled the orchestra at the Salle Pleyel, and Ravel took a seat beside me. Everything went well until the final part, where, in spite of myself, I increased the tempo by a fraction. Ravel jumped up, came over and pulled at my jacket: "not so fast", he exclaimed, and we had to begin again. Ravel's preference for a slower tempo is confirmed by his unhappiness with Toscanini's performance, as reported above. Toscanini's 1939 recording with the NBC Symphony Orchestra has a duration of 13 minutes 25 seconds.[7] In May 1994, with the Munich Philharmonic on tour in Cologne, conductor Sergiu Celibidache at the age of 82 gave a performance that lasted 17 minutes and 53 seconds, perhaps a record in the modern era.
This is one of the most interesting comments for me personally. I have played ALL the Bolero performances of Celibidache with the Munich Philharmonic, so the first one here on RUclips from the Herkulessaal in Munich and also the last one in Cologne in1994. The very last one was in Munich in June or July 1994. It is not so much the actual tempo or speed; it always was the tension and CONNECTION of the first to the last note of the piece. That was one of the most important principles of Celibidache: that the first note includes the last note of the composition and visa versa. That explains the tension of the complete performance, fast or slow, whatever. I don't know if my explanation is clear and makes sense to the reader. It is only my own personal experience: we did not notice the speed or length of the piece, it was a unity of the whole experience.

Found 3 interpretations of this piece by Celibidache (plus 1971 and 1994). To me this is the best one by far.
Maybe the best rendition of Bolero I've heard in my life so far
Is perfect!!!!!Full of tension and passion.
Now that is the way you conduct the Bolero. He was throwing thunderbolts up at the horns. His hair coming all undone; sweat flying. By 18 minutes he was a mess LOL. Beautiful performance.
Impresionante. Este es un director de otro planeta
Impresionante, me encanta Sergio Celibidache.
A great rendition of the masterpiece. Definitely one of the 5 best I have heard.
Just Bolero-Ravel, and MAESTRO CELIBIDACHE !!! FANTASTIC !!!

The best rendition !
Thanks
Great Munchnen Philarmoniker -Sergei Celibidache ...Beautiful Bolero !!
Sergiu* All the best!
@@mariusgelu1340 Muchas gracias, amigo Marius.

Uwielbiam ten utwór, a jeszcze w ten sposób zagrany....przepięknie.
He and Gustavo Dudamel are the best with their version of Bolero. Relaxing, fascinating, pure elegance. The perfect slowly tempo. Both are great!
In practice Dudamel is continuing its work. Plays the exact same tempo and exact the same beautyfull bolero

Sergiu Celibidache! Der beste aller zeiten! Big up!
Grandioso spettacolare, diretta magistralmente
Sergiu Celibidache é o melhor, the best!

P. S. " Asino, Chi é il Sindaco del Comune di Siano ? Come si chiama ?
I saw and heard Celibidache conducting live on 9 of the 99 times that he conducted in Spain, including Bruckner's Seventh, Third (twice), Fourth and Eighth Symphonies. His Bruckner was like no other and attending a concert by him was always a very special occasion. I must say, however, that not once on those nine occasions did he drive me to tears, something which has happened to me with other conductors (Eliahu Inbal, Zubin Mehta, Gary Bertini, Gennadi Rozhdestvensky, Rafael Frühbeck, Lorin Maazel, Josep Pons, Pedro Halffter, just to name a few).
because he was the one ,the special one !
Far away the best version of it
From Wikipedia:
The tempo indication in the score is Tempo di Bolero, moderato assai ("tempo of a bolero, very moderate"). In Ravel's own copy of the score, the printed metronome mark of 76 per quarter is crossed out and 66 is substituted.[13] Later editions of the score suggest a tempo of 72.[13] Ravel's own recording from January 1930 starts at around 66 per quarter, slightly slowing down later on to 60-63.[6] Its total duration is 15 minutes 50 seconds.[13] Coppola's first recording, at which Ravel was present, has a similar duration of 15 minutes 40 seconds.[13] Ravel said in an interview with the Daily Telegraph that the piece lasts 17 minutes.[14]
An average performance will last in the area of fifteen minutes, with the slowest recordings, such as that by Ravel's associate Pedro de Freitas Branco, extending well over 18 minutes[13] and the fastest, such as Leopold Stokowski's 1940 recording with the All American Youth Orchestra, approaching 12 minutes.[15]
At Coppola's first recording Ravel indicated strongly that he preferred a steady tempo, criticizing the conductor for getting faster at the end of the work. According to Coppola's own report:[16]
Maurice Ravel [...] did not have confidence in me for the Boléro.
Thank you for the research!
It is only my own personal experience: we did not notice the speed or length of the piece,
it was a unity of the whole experience. Friedrich Edelmann, edelmann@edelmann-rust.com
