Against given orders, he flew into the Cherkasy Cauldron and lead, despite severe head injuries, a platoon during the breakthrough of the surrounding, numerically vastly superior, Russian troops. In the third defensive battle between the Weichsel River and the Bug River, his company fought against the Bolsheviks over a ridge, that had decisive significance for the success of the division in the battle for its front section. Six times the ridge was lost - Each time the front of the regiment was close to breaking - and six times it was recaptured despite severe fire from enemy combat aircrafts etc. At evening, SS-Obersturmführer Søren Kam held the ridge firmly in his hand with the remains of his company, which he had become chief of during the day, since all preceding officers had fallen or were brought away heavily wounded. By personal courage, SS-Obersturmführer Kam succeded, when the order came to recover himself and the remains of the company back, Kam showed personal courage - and he succeded in recovering the unit back." If the text sounds a bit awkward, it is because it was first translated from German to Danish, likely not very accurately, and then from Danish to English by me as literally as I could.

Such an interesting recap of the life of S. Kam. Bless him. May his Soul RIP. He was serving in the elite Waffen SS. It was obviously the best time in his life, true dedication and a life with his comrades, and obviously went through the sadness and horror of war and survived. Can’t imagine how it must have felt to find out that Hitler was dead and the war was over. Just can’t believe he was wanted for one murder in 1943. So glad for him and his wife that he did not go to prison for that and that he lived his life a free man till he passed. Was obvious that he had been very proud of his rank and Iron Cross. Can’t blame him….Bless him and his family. Thank you for sharing this story so that he can be remembered
He simply participated in a murder in August 1943 in Denmark on a Danish journalist not being armed. Søren Kam and two other Nazis just fetched the journalist in his home and all 3 Nazis simply killed him in cold blood after having driven away by car. He should have been punished and hanged as a war criminal against another Dane. He was a traitor.
Bare du også vil tænke sådan om de 6 000,000 jøder der mistede livet under 2 verdenskrig. For jeg et sikker på at hvis søren var jøde under 2 verdenskrig kunne han sikkert i ikke lide hiltler og tyskerne.
Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross. The highest military honor in Germany. Only some 800 were awarded during WWII, among them 3 Danish Waffen SS volunteers (out of about 6000-8000 serving Danes). They were definitely ELITE
My father was 16 year old and got recruted in january 1945 by the german wehrmacht and send to Berlin in march 45. This 3 young soldiers reached together the Elbe River and crossed the river at night by swiming undiscovered over to the US & GB Forces . After the Elbe crossing the 3 comrades changed their way home , my father in direction westward to Hannover and the 2 others northwards home to Vejle / Denmark. Quiet shure this to danish guys was from ,, Frikorps Danmark ".
Frikorps Danmark didn’t exist anymore in 1945, but SS Regiment 24 Danmark where most Danes were in the end was in Berlin. They tell the story of the Danes in Berlin at the end of the video called “Danish Eastern Front Volunteers” on this channel.
Not that I know of. His memoir "Et liv uden fædreland" is only in Danish, and although there are a few books in English about Danish units like Free Corps Denmark, Kam wasn't part of those units.
No he doesn't regret his past because he believes that it was a righteous one. To be a part of something greater than yourself and have so many others there with you is something most people in today's time will never know or understand. To have something to really believe in, whether other people see it as wrong or not gives one a sense of conviction on a higher level. That conviction allows one to overlook any negatives or wrongs perpetrated by their side. They see any wrongs committed as necessary to achieve their goals. I understood this at a very young age and have always laughed at people who only see things as right and wrong, or in black & white.
The lesson here is what’s at stake when any nation, any people, lose a war. Unfortunately, the Soviet Union never paid for their crimes. And keep in mind most of their crimes happened during times of peace. Soren Kam, I salute you sir!
What do you mean with the Soviet Union never paid for their crimes? They lost 16 million people. It may have been more. I don't think you understand the history of World War 2 at all. It wasn't national socialism vs communism it was a genocide of supposed inferior people.
I agree with you. However, even though the Soviet Union didn't lose the war, they did lose the peace and the USSR fell in 1990. If the heart of the people had been with the USSR, it never would have fallen. Like you, though, it would have been just and right had Stalin and all of his evil henchmen, great and small, had to pay for their evil crimes while they lived among men on this earth.
