- Leeks can be planted from seed but are best planted as transplants. Deer and rabbit dont seem to like them. They have an excellent mild onion flavor and they can manage frosts and even heavier freezes.

I just learned you can perennialize these. I stumbled upon that fact because I planted a bed of leeks last spring, they were rangly and I never harvested them. But, noticed theyre coming back up this spring, huge. I was shocked. :)
The do handle the winters here almost, but I didnt know that.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN wow! Thanks for such a speedy reply. Been following you for years. Learned so much as beginner gardener. I refer so many people to your channel. Thank you for all your wonderful content.
So starting in trays , do you use grow lights and/or heat mats to get them started? Going to give a try this fall
Some of my favorites are Babington topset leeks - i got sets a decade ago, and i had a nice patch under my fig tree - would just cut at the base and let them resprout, and plant some of the sets.
I moved across town (zone 8b) and am starting a new patch from sets
Nice. I jotted down the name

Can I put the leek seed in a pot? What can I plant with leeks?
You could grow them in pots. You probably can grow what you'd like next to them.
Check out our new PODCAST Gardening Coast2Coast at gardeningcoast2coast.net. Please visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden shop for your fabric pots, fall & spring seeds, seed starting supplies, peppermint oil, neem oil, TRG merchandise and more at www.therustedgarden.com
Thank you! Out of the 50 or 60 leeks I planted, I only got 2. I'm definitely trying again next year
Transplants help but lots of water and if needed keep the water soluble fertilizer going more regularly to start.

Thank you! Will do 👍👍
My onion or leek starts come up but grow leggy fall over and die and if I handled like you they would immediately fall over and die. A few survive but grow slow and never get 1/3rd that size or thickness. Recipe for starting mix feeding watering?
How long it take to grow leek please
A good 90 days from germination.

Question. Another leek question. I am in Central Virginia. Followed your directions for sowing leeks and onions in flats. I sowed leeks and bunching onions on January 17. When should I plant the out in the garden?
Harden them off for a week and now is good time

Leeks aren’t critter resistant in my garden. I see them nibbled down to the ground quite often. I thought it was rabbits, but I also have mice and voles. I pick leeks, walking onions, and bunching onions on an as needed basis, so it doesn’t bother me if I lose one here and there.
So far so good on my end. Wonder what is getting them

I've tried twice growing leeks this year. The first batch, planted in Mar 2021, never got bigger than 1/4" in diameter, even to this day. The 2d batch, direct sowed 6 weeks ago, came up okay, but are still less than pencil thin so I'm not very optimistic. I use aged mushroom compost for plantings (verified plenty of microbes). Compost tea for fertilizer and/or fish emulsion. Something clearly magical about growing leeks, I think. (Zone 7a).
That set up sounds right. If you didnt go with transplants, try that but otherwise, the set up sounds right

I keep getting some sort of tiny worm inside my leeks…so annoying… two years in a row. I live in S CT in a wooded area and I have every bug and critter known to man!
So I have been experimenting with a neem oil drench. Like 2 or 3 tablespoons in a gallon of water with soap. And then soak in the soil. I have had noticeable success with treating wire worms. Not perfect but helped. Next year Ill do a video on it.

How do you get your soil so loose? I have tried several things and mine seems to always compact. Thanks!
I have a lot of videos on it but I use peat moss to amend the top of my beds. I really helps. Compost yearly too.

I've tried growing leeks a few times and they just stay thin and noodly even at 8 inches apart. My biggest one is about the width of a dime. In a different row of the same bed, beets and parsnips are doing great so idk what's wrong!
I know, right?
Hmmm. Not sure. I am growing American Flag variety.

It depends on where you live. If I don’t have radishes in the ground by Sept 1, then they never bulb up. Mid-August is preferable though but tricky if it’s still hot. Ohio here.
So very helpful, thank you!!!
Glad to help

I overwinter mine like a perennial. The flowers are beautiful when cut to enjoy indoors and the pollinators love them if I leave them outside. I like having pretty things in my vegetable garden to help make my time out there more enjoyable.
