  • Leeks can be planted from seed but are best planted as transplants. Deer and rabbit dont seem to like them. They have an excellent mild onion flavor and they can manage frosts and even heavier freezes.

Some of my favorites are Babington topset leeks - i got sets a decade ago, and i had a nice patch under my fig tree - would just cut at the base and let them resprout, and plant some of the sets.

Leeks aren’t critter resistant in my garden. I see them nibbled down to the ground quite often. I thought it was rabbits, but I also have mice and voles. I pick leeks, walking onions, and bunching onions on an as needed basis, so it doesn’t bother me if I lose one here and there.

I've tried twice growing leeks this year. The first batch, planted in Mar 2021, never got bigger than 1/4" in diameter, even to this day. The 2d batch, direct sowed 6 weeks ago, came up okay, but are still less than pencil thin so I'm not very optimistic. I use aged mushroom compost for plantings (verified plenty of microbes). Compost tea for fertilizer and/or fish emulsion. Something clearly magical about growing leeks, I think. (Zone 7a).

Mine rarely bolt unless they over winter.

I overwinter mine like a perennial. The flowers are beautiful when cut to enjoy indoors and the pollinators love them if I leave them outside. I like having pretty things in my vegetable garden to help make my time out there more enjoyable.
