- A decent local loyalist of Belfast who knows his history and culture gives Gerry Kelly his analytical view of the recent flag decision.
What were the flag protests?
On 3 December 2012, Belfast City Council voted to limit the days that the Union Flag (the flag of the United Kingdom) flies from Belfast City Hall. Since 1906, the flag had been flown every day of the year. The vote means that it will now be flown no more than 18 days a year. The move to limit the number of days was backed by the council's Irish nationalists and the Alliance Party; it was opposed by the unionist councillors.
As a response, loyalists and unionists have held street protests throughout Northern Ireland. On the night of the vote, protesters tried to storm City Hall. Throughout December and January, protests were held almost daily and most involved the protesters blocking roads while carrying Union Flags and banners. Some of these protests led to clashes between loyalists and the police, sparking riots. Rioters attacked police with petrol bombs, bricks, stones and fireworks; police responded with plastic bullets and water cannon. Alliance Party offices and the homes of Alliance Party members were attacked, while Belfast City Councillors were sent death threats. According to police, some of the violence was orchestrated by high-ranking members of the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) and Ulster Defence Association (UDA). Since February 2013, the protests have been smaller and less frequent.

As a young Unionist from NI in my early 20's I have no problem with Nationalist politicians, and I have many friends from a RC background. However Sinn Fein (shown in this clip) are the political wing of the IRA. Gerry Kelly who got shouted down bombed London and killed 1 person and was jailed, he then broke out of prison and shot a prison officer in the head during his escape. He was later re-arrested in Holland with bombs and chemicals to be used as weapons. Any wonder people aren't prepared to accept anything that killer says? How would you feel if it was your family, friends or community who had been bombed and murdered in the hundreds to sit and listen to someone like him lecture anyone.

Gerry Kelly is very open about his past, the recognition that there was a conflict, a dirty war would be a great start from Loyalists and some Unionists, the State colluded with Loyalists the RUC colluded with paramilitaries, jesus everybody was fucking killing everybody! Lol
And yes you are totally right not to accept the word of a "killer" as you say, but at the time Sinn Fein had the support, still do, and always will, but the people are all wrong you,ll cry no doubt. The saddest thing about this whole debate, if we can call it that, is that people are measured by their character, their word, their empathy etc but never identified by their flag. There are many countries around the world where the Union Jack is hated and seen as a monstrous symbol of empire, death and destruction, massacres and so to identify with a flag is utter nonsense.
The young guys comments were probably the funniest and yet ironic all the same. When we had the politician explaining he was Irish and the youngster said he was British I wondered why it happened that he missed the fact that he lived in Northern IRELAND! Maybe they should canvass for a referendum to change the name to West Britain.

The Prime minister refers to the 'UK' as Great Britain and in sporting events the *British* team (which contains Northern Ireland) is called team GB (team Great Britain), and in EU talks and negotiations the 'UK' is called Great Britain. The term UK is only favoured now probably due to political correctness and confusion over the island and country. You know that during world war 2 the 'UK' was always called Great Britain right? Well even since then no document or bill has been passed to change the name of the country, so you may call the UK, Great Britain, as most do. But it is official that people from Northern Ireland have British citezenship, like the rest of the 'UK'.
So people from the 'UK' (Great Britain, same thing) are called British, like it or not. Even if they are on the island of Ireland, they are British (there is no such thing as UKish).

I fail to see what 'analytical view' this guy gave., He just reiterated the usual 'it's our fleg' nonsense. I understand you are trying to not antagonise loyalists, but trying to paint this guy as being articulate and reasonable, when he is clearly not, is just being PC for the sake of being PC in my view. I mean at one point when Gerry was trying to speak, he was haranging him, saying he wouldn't be happy until the tricolour was put up instead, when no one was suggesting the tricolour being put up on official buildings at all. His comment that "I will never put pyself in nationalist/republican shoes! Never" shows us just how 'analytical' his views really are.

p.s. I know my own history, I grew up in the troubles and I remember that Cathokics were treated like second class citizens for years. The only thing Loyalism is angry about is the fact that they aren't running the show anymore and they can't handle not being able to dominate anymore.
The saddest thing about the Loyalists position it that the mainland don't care about their misplaced Loyalty, and that was shown in the berxit debate and vote.

The basis upon which a constructive argument can be formed has seemingly passed the Loyalist community by. Any time a Nationalist view is aired, it's greeted with interruption. This can only be down to a basic lack of verbality and poor sociology within their community. The repetition of 'never', a throw-back to a time when unionist hegemony could be rubber-stamped with one simple word - enough to bat the Nationalists down. Not any more.

Ulster has always been a distinct & unique land with its own culture & identity, not for hundreds but thousands of years. Economically we are better off as part of the British Union than the Republic. Through remaining part of the United Kingdom over the past century Ulster has seen much greater prosperity than the south which is why so many have moved north in search of work & a better life. Northern Ireland is a land fighting to retain its freedom & identity, its people shall never surrender

Honesty is key here. The young man in the audience has the honesty to admit that he does not wish to put himself in nationalist shoes. Gerry Kelly *claims* to do so but does not. If Gerry Kelly were to really put himself in unionist shoes, or even in the shoes of his victims' families, he would resign out of common decency.
Didn't take long...I will "never" put myself in nationslists's shoes.....you could almost hear Paisley "Never, never, never". "A protestant state for a protestant people, a protestant parliament for a protestant people"....I don't think so. Catholics/Nationalists are quite prepared to share power and all that NI has to offer and throughout their history, Loyalists/Protestants have never wanted to do so....quite simple because their ancestors took the land off the indigenous people...and they could never share it because they felt it was being taken back. I think the thing that can be taken from that is that, whilst Ireland is an island, it has never operated in isolation. It has, for thousands of years, been constanting interacting and people-swapping, trading elsewhere. It has been the coloniser and the colonised.

Loyalists bring up their kids to believe that the state will look after them in terms of jobs etc, so they don't need to be well educated and are loyal to the flag. Harland & Wolff was in debt for decades but was kept afloat by Stormont because it provided jobs and reaped loyalty.
Funny how the very man declaring Irish land as entirely belonging to the UK is sporting trademark ginger hair and a tracksuit, to top it off.
The "loyalist underclass" wanted it up 365days/year. The UUP's policy (as supported by NI21 and the Alliance) since the late 90s is designated days, bringing Belfast (and Northern Ireland's councils, at least in theory) in line with hundreds of other councils throughout the country. Thus unionist "upperclass" wanted 17days/year. The SDLP also supports this policy in Belfast and Downpatrick. But the SDLP is inconsistent - they don't support 17days/year in Derry/Londonderry.
The flip side of people dying for any fleg is that people are still killing for it as well

They vast majority of Northern Irish nationalists were against the IRA throughout the duration of the Troubles. One possible reason why Sinn Féin has won so many votes in recent times is because they have moved away (somewhat) from their recent violent past. Whilst the IRA were active Sinn Féin generally polled poorly.
For over 40 years the Unionists have had "it's our way or no way" attitude and now they know how it feels, ya's aren't cracking the whip anymore lads this loyalist tinted Northern Ireland is ending.
The difference between Ireland and the Koreans is that, despite all years of separation all Koreans view themselves and one another as Koreans. The same was true of Germany. Both the E Germans and the W Germans all considered themselves German. This is not the case in Ireland. The Southern Irish consider themselves to be Irish whilst the Northern Irish consider themselves to be Northern Irish. It's different. We no longer share a common identity upon which a nationality could organically grow.
The UK hasn't had to have the EU/IMF bail it out twice - ROI has. It doesn't have the second highest level of household debt on Earth - 190% of yearly income in ROI. We don't have an unemployment rate of 13-14% - ROI does. The UK is the 7th largest economic block on the plannet and the Pound is the 4th most used currency internationally. Emmigration rates from ROI are far higher than from the UK.

But as much as Ulster has ties with Scotland that doesn't mean they have no ties with Ireland, that's an important point!
It really annoys me when i go to England and they REFUSE to take Ulster bank notes, they say it 's IRISH money. They also call us ALL paddys, both Catholic and Protestants. Now this annoys me as I'm a catholic but what must it do to LOYALISTS? The country u strive so much to be loyal to, doesn't recognise your ULSTER currency or even ur LOYALISM!! The flag of the United Kingdom of Grate Britain and Northern Ireland flies circa 17 designated days per year over Belfast City Hall and Stormont already - this brings us into line with the most of the rest of the coutry where the Union Flag is flown on the same 17 designated days yearly.

That goes against the principle of consent. It is enshrined in the Good Friday Agreement (support and upheld by Sinn Féin/SDLP and the Southern government) that it is up to the people of Northern Ireland to decide how to govern themselves. We choose.
Balls. My mother grew up in Camlough in the 60s and 70s. Her father was turned down from numerous jobs because he was catholic. My grandmother was refused promotion for years whilst she watched lesser-experienced protestants move up the ladder. I could tell you more. And *yet* the vast majority of ppl didn't just join the RA. NI MPs' independence at Westminster have allowed them to achieve more things locally because they cannot be accused of having a party political bias RE the three larger parties. Plus it means that they vote, generally, according to what they think rather than how thw whips of the bigger parties command.
The flag of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK) is the national flag of every part of the country. It had cross-community support. More catholics did not want to take it down than wanted to take it down.
There is an all-Ireland business culture in the same way that there's an pan-British Isles business culture. Neither effects the sovereignty of the United Kingdom or the ROI.

Because the tri-colour is the oficially reognised flag of the Repbublic of Ireland - not the island of Ireland. It would be inappropriate for any governing body within the UK to fly another country's flag.
