      Toyota meant to be 5 star...Volvo too strong for words. Hardly scratched..Toyota 5 star during careful, lab controlled tests..So what if Toyota is marginally more reliable, only get one life.

    • @ronanwhite6785
      @ronanwhite6785 6 лет назад +61

      Very true! There's no description here to say what the circumstances of this multiple pile up were, the Volvo is certainly rigidly strong, the Avensis behaved exactly as it's supposed to, without intrusion to the cabin space. The Volvo to Audi impact looked to be at a much lower closing speed judging by the relatively minor damage between those two. The Avensis has ploughed into the rear of the Volvo at a greater speed and caught it on the diagonal of the Volvo, this version being an all wheel drive, so more heavy mechanically than the Toyota. The windscreen is intact and the doors open perfectly post impact. The airbags deployed and the driver appears to have stepped out uninjured. Launched in 2003 this model of Avensis has a very safe 5star ncap safety rating and all models had 9 airbags as standard. Yes, it's now a total loss but it protected its occupants ! If this had been in the 1970s someone would have been very injured or dead....!

    Wir fahren selbst einen. Unser V 70 ist vor 2 Jahren in einem Mitsubishi Colt eingeschlagen. Das Ergebnis war ungefähr das selbe. Der Mitsubishi hatte keinen Kofferraum mehr und war zusammen geschoben. Am Volvo war eine 2cm breite und 0,5 cm tiefe Beule und ein Clip vom Grill war abgebrochen. Dieses Auto fahren wir immer noch und fühlen uns voll sicher. Ich würde immer wieder Volvo kaufen! 🙋‍♂️

    Pretty much identical results to my '89 Merc W201, that caught a 2005 Clio up its ass. Rear bumper got few scratches, Clio had to call the tow truck. And that was the smallest Merc prior to the A-class, developed in the late '70s.

    My dad has a Volvo XC70 exactly like that one. A couple years he was involved in a 40 kph front offset car accident. A lady in her Mazda ran a red and hit him. Her airbags deployed and my dads didn’t. Her car was completely totaled and she had a broken arm and my dads car had damage but not nearly as much as the totaled Mazda. He was fine but the lady broke her arm. Car is now fixed and has had zero issues. Volvo’s are built to last even after an accident.

      Nope... The Toyota will be crushed same way... The string areas of the Toyota couldn't hit the Volvo... XC70 similar to SUVs is higher and the Toyota did an emergency brake... So it slipped underneath the Volvo... That's it.
      I had sadly a crash once with my Volvo S70 T5 against a Kia SUV. My Volvo (littlebit lowered) looked the same like that Toyota...

    I like the XC-70 (was even thinking about buying one) but what you see on this video is not what you might think it is. If one car has less damage than the other, it doesn't necessarily mean it's safer. I've seen a few crashes like this one and have even been involved in two and it's always the same result. No matter what brands/models are involved, it's always the rear end that stays "unscratched" and the front looks like disaster and that's completely normal. Rear end only has little distance between it and the rear passenger seats, so in order to protect the passengers, it's tougher, but in terms of shock absorbance, thats not a good thing, since a lot of force is transfered to the passengers this way. With the front end being far away from passengers, there's a lot of space for metal to bend - and while for a lot of people this may seem like a bad idea and unsafe, front end is designed so that it gives when you crash hard. And that's because in order to absorb the impact, your deceleration must be as slow as possible which is what that design achieves. When you jump and land on the floor from let's say 1m/3ft, you bend your knees to absorb the impact. You might not even want to imagine how bad it would have felt and how bad it might have had ended if your legs would have stayed locked straight. If the Volvo would've had hit the Toyota's rear end, the result would've looked very similar for Volvo, trust me. Once I was driving with my co-worker in a VW Caddy and he was not concentrated on the road and so we crashed into a VW Polo (same brand but a lot smaller car) and it almost wasn't even scratched, while the caddy's front end looked like sh*t.

      Not true. I crushed 3 times with my xc90 (2005) front into back and side of other cars. All cars in front had visible damage and one couldn't close back door. My car has no visible damage in the front. I still drive it like nothing happened.

      I'm not here to argue with you my friend, but I suggest you take a look at the video where an XC70 crashed into a Scania truck and then tell me that a strong body shell is less important and body for that matter it's not important. Volvos are designed the absorb the impact a lot better then probably any other make of cars. This was a low speed impact . I would rather be in a car that is strong at high speeds than in one that's a write-off at a low speed.

  • @mbicer
    @mbicer 3 года назад +1

    Google says a Volvo typically will last for 20 years, which is much better compared to 15 years of Passat. What I am wondering is how safe could they be after 10/15 years on the road? Airbags, let's say, are guaranteed for ten years to work properly, after that they need to be changed. And there is this 'metal fatigue' issue. A 2005 Volvo xc70 has 16% more metal, which is to assure safety, I guess, compared to a 2008 Forester. Can we say a 2011 and later family sedans are safer than a 2005 XC70? As you see I need ideas here. Thanks.

    Totally unfair "test" and impossible to make any conclusion at all.
    1) A heavier car always has an advantage. It's not a proof of better safety design.
    2) The rear of the car is always stronger and more sturdy.
    3) The front of the car is supposed to crumble to absorb and disperse the collision energy.

    I cant believe people still believe that if the front part of you car crumbuled, it mean that you are in a insafe car. It its designed to do that!. In case you were going to hit a pedestrian, you rather hit it with a plastic bumber or a steel one ? Plus, plastic bumpers are required by laws, they are lighter making the car save more fuel economy, have a better performance, it doesnt rust, and more importantly cost less to replace.
    Seriously the amount of people that still believe that a car should be made completly out of steel and doesnt crumble still amaze me. ( sorry for my bad english )

Which correlates to impact of the Avensis beeing slightly off centre on the Volvo to the right... maybe not so good after all!

    Cars are designed that way, that the front of the car collapses to absorb the force of Crash and soften the blow.
    If Toyota and Volvo would change places, result would be reversed.
    Meaning that the back of Toyota would be unharmed, and the front of Volvo would look like Toyota now.

    This goes to show how overbuilt Volvo Wagons really are!!!! They are literally almost impossible to destroy!!!! That XC70 only needs a new set of bumpers where as the Toyota is finished.
    But the good news is it looks like nobody was hurt, and the cars held up well, and protected their occupants.

    I think people are a bit misguided when it comes to Volvos. There's no such thing as a 'safe car' it's luck of the draw in a crash really. I drive a Volvo V70 but I'm under no illusion it will save me in a serious collision. The Volvo cars of today are a joke to be honest. Safety is a driver that is constantly aware and on the look out for others misconduct on the road! I hate when people use the word 'tank' also, as you can't change the laws of physics. Safe car is a marketing gimmick for sure, I've heard small hatchbacks being called safe cars! It's a safe car as long as your not hit by a truck!

    Every car that hits other car from the back takes more damage! I was driving Dacia Sandero 2009 and one girl hit my car on my back. Her car was destroyed, mine was perfectly fine! It is not about the brand. All cars are fragile on the front! It is a safety feature.

    It's not because Volvo is tough. There were some years ago when sedans, SUVs, pick-up's, and trucks did not align their bumper and this is a classic case. The result has been huge damage to the smaller cars when hitting bigger cars becaus their bumpers were too low so all the impact went directly to the hood and all the components within. Volvos are safe but doesn't mean they're so tough. In fact if they're xrumple zones are too tough, that would make them less safe.

      Northernspear Im a Volvo driver. I do consider my Volvo tough. Its been broken but never left me stranded. I drove it 800 miles with an obvious leaking gas tank on a the donut with a shoestring timing belt. It cut off in the driveway as I pulled up. Its tough enough for me!!! Ive been in a few crashes over the years in Volvo's and walked away. Im not wrenching shit or crossing the Mojave or tractor pulling. I dont need a roll or to pull a 40ft camper up the mountain. Its a Volvo, not a pickup. So what if someone calls it "tough".

    • @markmd9

      If crumple zone is soft like for Toyota then at low speed crash ex:40km/h, you will have a lot more greater comfort then in Volvo but at high speed crash ex:80km/h, that soft crumple zone will render useless and person in volvo will survive but but that in Toyota may not
