In my case, the biggest issue I have with a slight change in stack height from front to back in shoes is knee pain. That difference in stack height and any type of motion control where my foot can’t move sideways, does something to my gait to cause knee pain. To me the instant relief of knee pain was the biggest change I saw when moving to a zero drop neutral shoe. Hopefully you don’t experience knee pain with the new shoes.
Fun to see the new gear. I have a few items as well. I will highlight them as well. I'm excited to get back on the trail. For now we are deep with snow and many of the canyons and ski resorts have been periodically closed due to avalanche dangers. I'll get out once it is safe to do so. Take care and have a great day.
My favorite videos of the year, BUT your right, the longer I do this the more my gear is so fine tuned it's hard to try new stuff. haha Love Brooks for road running! Great video Crow!
I switched from the Brooks Cascadia to Altra Lone Peak 7 after getting really sore toes on a 3 day PCT hike. LOVE the Altra Lone Peak 7s! No more sore toes.
That is what I am afraid of. I have used the Lone Peaks for so long…I’m afraid this drop will cause me problems…oh well, we will see. Thanks for watching it. Crow✌️
Yay…New gear!!! I have the Xero Z-trails. Don’t always carry them, but if I know that I have water-crossing, I carry them to protect my tender feet from sharp rocks. I carried them a few years back when we did the Smokies-Abrams Crk/Gregory/Cades Cove loop. You know the one where you hurled 🤮 at CS13 ! Those REI Active Pursuit shorts are awesome. I have 3 pair and have worn them now for about 3 years. Don’t worry with the 7in inseam, with that cinch-string, you can hike them up and show off those beautiful “Crow-legs” (get it… “bird-legs”)! Same boat as you with the trekking pole. I only use them for my shelter now…, but I like having them in the event of a water-crossing. Great video… see ya brother! - JBEN
Just getting into backpacking. Good to know Brooks are an option. Been wearing their running shoes for years. Worked in restaurants and retail for year before current job and loved their comfort. Getting 2 new pairs. A regular pair for everyday and one for backpacking/hiking that I'll break in on the job.
I have always been an Altra wearer of backpacking shoes. But, these were a more economical option when they were on sale. I really like the feel of these. Very comfortable and the tread seems to work. Thanks for watching it. Crow✌️
Synthetic is the way to go on trail! Look forward to hearing your thoughts on Brooks versus Altra. Nice camp shoes! Shorts are better than no shorts. The goat poles are AWESOME! Great job!
Great choice of gear! :) hmmm I will add the Zero pump, The Ursack XL and a Senchi design zip hoodie. Maybe more later hahaha but that should go on my Foothills trail trip in March.
Great video! I’m adding the Outdoor Vitals CS40 to my pack line up. I’ve don a couple practice loads with it and the load lifters and frame design carries weight great.
Before I answer, I will add a comment or two regarding your new gear. The Apex Torrid Jacket was my favorite piece of gear on my AT Thru Hike. I have retired it and went to a new jacket from Outdoor Vitals. The Brooks Cascadia 13’s are what I started my AT Thru Hike in because I started in Maine and I wanted that rock plate. I found those shoes put my foot in a roll condition and I would fall a lot. After switching to Altra’s in Virginia I never fell again. Now to answer your question: I will have a new 20F zipped underquilt on my Dutchware Hammock on my SOBO Pinhoti Thru Hike in January. No more adjusting in the middle of the night, no more adjusting during my setup and no more guess work. Happy Hiking
Thanks for watching it my friend. I wondered about the Brooks. Nice to get your insight. I will try them out, just based on the price. But, we will see. Nice addition with the underquilt. Crow✌️
@@ASTHECROWFLIESHIKING everyone’s feet are different. I am looking for a new shoe as well because the Altra’s durability is concerning me. Happy Hiking
I am wowed by the amount of boxes behind you! I'm with you on the Trekking-Pole/Camera dynamic. I would probably use them if I didn't film. Rugged Mountain Siblings usually use one though so if they don't want to use it sometimes I will. Oof... budget is going to kill me this year! I'd love to get a new drone... but probably won't. $$ I was considering a new case for my filming phone that I can attach ND filters to. Again, not sure that is worth the $$. Want to get hip straps from Waymark for my EVLV to maybe increase the load a little. Finally a dyneema tarp of some sort. Maybe an 8x10 for quick setup when/if it rains. Looking forward to 2024 adventures!
Great comment. I hear ya on cost…even budget stuff is expensive. But, it is our hobby…so, go for it. Yeah, I’m going to start using poles. I saw in Wyoming that I needed them. Appreciate ya! Crow✌️
As a full time tree dweller, my quest is always to go lighter and be able to camp more. So after getting base weight below 8 pounds, I decided to add things that would allow me to “camp more”. I bought a YOBO Gear Hive stand, Dutchware Gear tarp and bug room. It’s going to allow me to have systems that will allow me to stay in the air even when trees aren’t available (i.e., “camp more”)!
Love your content, brother, and how you're a man of faith. Question on the torrid, I almost pulled the trigger on it, but heard from one of your Pinhoti mafia dudes that it wasn't that durable, so I'm looking at the MH ghost shadow. Thoughts?
Thanks so much! Yeah, it is new to me. I am concerned about the durability…just haven’t had it long enough to give an assessment. I mean, it feels like sleeping bag material…so, we will see. It is super light. Love it. Yeah, that MH ghost shadow May he a good purchase. Crow✌️
Love my GOG blanket!!! Also my wife has those same Xero sandals. Great company. Nothing new in my set this year but hoping for an overnight in GA soon. Stay save bud!
Appreciate ya! Yeah, those Xero Shoes have worked out well. The GOG blanket is a must. That thing is great for summer in the south on backpacking trip. Crow✌️
Good stuff. I recently picked up the Skyline Fast pack from OV for day hikes, shorter trips, potential fast packing. Also recently picked up new Komperdell carbon fiber poles after my GG LT5's were inadvertently left a trailhead by a family member. Might have to check out the Get Out Gear poles if I need more in the future. Added another sleeping pad, REI Helix. I also used the Ranger from Evolved Supply Co. last summer on the TMB and really enjoyed it. Looking forward to getting it out more this year. Happy hiking
Those gear pieces seem amazing! I like that Ranger pack. Dang, that stinks about the GG poles. I know those are expensive. Appreciate you watching this. Crow✌️
Those Xero sandals are good camp wear. I used the Z-trail in 2023 and I’m pretty pleased with them. My new add in 2024 will be the Topo Pursuit trail runners. I’m switching, at some point this winter, from the Lone Peak due to durability worries on long trails. I’ve tested the Topo and they feel comfortable and hope they’ll gain my trust to be my shoe of choice on this summer’s Colorado Trail. Best wishes on your 2024 adventures!✌️
Thanks my friend for watching it. I have been looking at those Topos. Those may be something I try in the future. Great comment. I have liked these Xero Shoes so far. Crow✌️
I have add'ed A New sleeping bag for winter time this year. Comfort rated to minus 12 degrees celsius. Where I live we have minus 9 degrees celsius at the moment, so it just fits perfect. Rainmittens. I have always just walked with wet hands and wet gloves. I have never had a a raincoat for My hands before, but where I live its pretty Nice with a wollen liner glove underneath at winter time. Trekking poles. I havn't got them yet, but expect to buy some soon.
Good additions! I hear ya. I have rarely used gloves, Becuase I live in the Southeast part of the U.S. but, I have recently added those to my kit and love it. I have used the fingerless gloves, Becuase I film all the time and need to touch the screen. It has helped on the cold mornings. Thanks for your comment. Crow✌️
I wore the Cascadia 15s before switching to Topos. They are a good solid shoe that held up well for me but I wanted more room in the toe box. As for my new gear this year I went with the Garmin Instinct 2 solar gps smartwatch. So far I’m loving it. Had the first version and put it through heck and back over the last 4-5 years so it was time. Hopefully all your new choices work well for you.
That is crazy…I just ordered the Garmin Instinct 2. I am really looking forward to using it. Good to hear that you like it. I’m excited to figure it out. Crow✌️
I like shorts to my knees ie the 9 “. I can’t do the shorts shorts younger guys are doing. If I have compression socks on I find my legs are covered enough when it’s colder while still allowing ventilation. I’ll be adding Topo pursuits , zero drop. I usually wear speedgoats so this will be bigger change but you’ll never know if you don’t try.
I would be happy to just have enough time to get to use the gear that I already have! Shan & I both like to use trekking poles, but right now we are both just using cheap sets that I picked up at Unclaimed for like $12.
Nothing wrong with a good fine of trekking poles. I think I know where you found them. I hear you can find a lot of good stuff there. The more time I want to go hiking…the less time I have. Thanks for watching it. Crow✌️
@@ASTHECROWFLIESHIKING Unclaimed Baggage Center…it is spotty. You never know what you will find. Sometimes it’s great, sometimes you won’t find a thing. Luckily we live close enough to swing by occasionally and see what is there.
Shoes are such a pain to get dialed in...I tried those (Cascadias) and they were too narrow for me, hope they work for you. I ended up back in Merrells after Salming discontinued US distribution. I can not do Zero drops...at all. Shorts - take a look at Coalatree. I wear their longer pants also. I, too, wear shorts not just to hike, but pretty much all the time. They are slightly water resistant & have some stretch as well.
I hear ya! Just basically trying these Brooks due to the price and hoping for the best. The Altras are so expensive and don’t seem to last long. But, they are so comfortable and work so well…for me. Thanks for watching this. Hope all is well. Crow✌️
7” inseam = pants Replaced my duplex with the offset duo, can’t wait to get it out on trail. Switched to the new balance fresh foam X more trail v3, the hokas started causing an issue on my right foot and the cushion just wasn’t enough for those pesky rock gardens on the Pinhoti.
I’m interested to see the long term impact on those New Balance. They seem awesome. The Offset Duo looks amazing. I thought of you and Miyagi when I said that about the shorts. 😂✌️
I've been breaking in the Topo Athletic Runventure 4 to replace a couple pairs of Lone Peak 5s. Feels great so far. It's zero drop, has a wide toe box, and has a stack height similar to the Altra Superiors. I also picked up a cheap monocular so hope to see some wildlife. I can't go without my trekking poles. I'll just hold both in one hand while filming. I picked up a Ulanzi necklace mount which works great for hands free filming.
@@ASTHECROWFLIESHIKING The Lone Peaks felt great on my feet. I just wasn't a fan of the MaxTrac outsoles wearing down so fast. So basically wanted to try some Vibram outsoles with a low stack height shoe. Cheers. Hope your 2024 is great.
I have the Xero Z-trek and the Jessie. Since the Jessie is a woman's sandal the toe loop is a little small, but other than that, I love both of them and I use them for camp shoes and short day hikes. The Z-trek is better for water crossings, in my opinion. I too prefer hiking in shorts. Last fall I picked up an inexpensive kilt to try for hiking and for cooler weather, it's pretty nice. I don't think it will be an option when the biting bugs are at their peak. For new gear, I took advantage of Hammock Gear's end of year sale and picked up a new hammock, winter cover, and tarp. Didn't really *need* a new setup, but my current hammock is starting to show some wear and the tarp is an upgrade to what I currently have. I also picked up a new suspension system for the hammock from Myers Tech Hammock Lab. I also took advantage of Black Friday sales and picked up two Get Out Gear quilts. One will be converted to a summer underquilt for my hammock.
I have my DIY 4.05 ounce Dyneema floorless tent, 4 ft W x 8.5 ft L x 3.5 ft H and my DIY heat reflective Anorak, breathable, wind and water repellent/proofed and its' complimentary Over-pants, combined weight of 8.75 ounces, great freedom of motion and excellent warmth.
I just bought a pair of those REI shorts. If you like them, they currently have a couple other colors on super steep clearance. EDIT: looks like they’ve sold out of the clearance colors.
I’ve never slept well on the trail, so just got a Helinox cot. Hope to be able to use it instead of the Sea-to-Summit Ether Light pad, so the weight will almost be the same.
@@ASTHECROWFLIESHIKING I’ve ordered the Helinox Lite Cot, it does weight 2lbs 12 oz, that is one more pound than the Sea-to-Summit Ether Light (large), plus a 1/4” thin pad I was using under it to protect the Ether Light. One aspect of a cot that also appeals to me, is that it might allow to easier selection of tent sites, as maybe the cot will allow to sleep in areas that are not 100% level. I’ve gotten better at site selection, but as you know sometimes it takes a lot of work to find a good site and sometimes we are wrong.
Items im swapping in Tensor Extreme, a Fire Maple 900ml Ti pot and pump zero. A couple things I'm trying this year are a Zenbivy pad sheet and a really cool light weight compact folding saw from Warder for the colder trips.
That ZenBivy pad sheet looks amazing. I may have to check that out. So, there were issues with the Tensor Extreme? Or, are you going to be using it? Thanks for watching this video. Crow✌️
New sub here. Wondering what your experience was with the Featherstone Backbone 2 person tent you reviewed last year. I need a backpacking tent for my son and me so looking for ideas. Many thanks!
Thanks so much! I actually got the Backbone 1, but, it is really the same features, just wider on the floor. I have been really impressed with the tent. It has worked out great. Super light and has incredible features. Can’t beat the price on it. Thanks for watching it. Crow✌️
Those trekking poles seem nice and robust. What do they weigh? Cool video. Will you be using the Desolo pack in 2024? I purchased a new 0.71 ultralight hammock for 2024 that I'll be using to replace my 1.0 halfwit hammock from Dutchware. I have the old plexamid, but I mostly do Hammock trips, I haven't felt a reason to upgrade to the Plexsolo since I only use the tent if I am going to the Whites or High Sierra's where there aren't many ideal hammock spots at higher elevations. Is that your first dyneema tent? I keep going back and forth on whether to do shorts or not, a lot of my hiking is in Pennsylvania which is like tick capital of the United States so I always use permethrin treated pants and shirts. I know I could use DEET or other insect repellent on my legs but then I consider whether it would damage my quilt etc at night Another awesome video. Good stuff.
I think those trekking poles are around 1.1 pound for the pair…so, super light and very strong. Yeah, I will be using the Desolo pack on some hikes. I mostly use the HMG Junction for longer adventures. As far as the tent, I have the Zpacks Duplex and love it. The Plex Solo was the next step for me. Thanks for watching it! Excellent comment. Appreciate you sharing it. Crow✌️
The only DOWNside is that it doesn’t pack DOWN like my other DOWN jackets do. I can really cinch those DOWN and they’ll puff up later. This doesn’t quite pack DOWN like the others do. The next edition to my pack goes DOWN to my feet. Jesus how many times will you say DOWN

I can't go without my trekking poles. I'll just hold both in one hand while filming. I picked up a Ulanzi necklace mount which works great for hands free filming.
Nice idea with the monocular. That might be pretty cool. Yeah, those Topos are very popular. I hear they are great. Crow✌️
I bet that new Hammock Gear setup is awesome! Very cool. Yeah, that was a good sale for GOG. Thanks my friend. ✌️
I’m trying out a tarp. Looks pretty cool, but we’ll see
I do love a good tarp setup with a bivy. That is one of my go to setups. Best of luck with it. Crow
That sounds like a great DIY design for gear. Well done. ✌️
I just bought a pair of those REI shorts. If you like them, they currently have a couple other colors on super steep clearance.
EDIT: looks like they’ve sold out of the clearance colors.
Thanks for watching it. Yeah, these shorts seem like they will be a great addition. Crow✌️
I’ve never slept well on the trail, so just got a Helinox cot. Hope to be able to use it instead of the Sea-to-Summit Ether Light pad, so the weight will almost be the same.
Good idea. So, the cot is light? That sounds amazing and comfortable. Crow✌️
Crow✌️
Waiting for new nemo tent mayfly, if not what I want will go dragon fly
Nice! I bet that will be a great tent.
I know I could use DEET or other insect repellent on my legs but then I consider whether it would damage my quilt etc at night
Another awesome video.
Jesus how many times will you say DOWN
😂 Well said. Yeah, I am not a fan of this jacket. It ripped on me the first time one trail. Very fragile. EE didn’t help with a patch kit either…
Nice one Brad! Curious to hear how the shoes work out for ya. Still not sure why the Timp 3s didn't work. Mine are holding up so far!
Thanks Dave. I may have gotten a bad production of the Timps…they fell apart on my Utah trip. I know not sure if these Brooks will work…time will tell. Appreciate ya! ✌️
I added a Garmin inReach mini 2.
Nice! Yeah, I have been looking at that. How you like it so far? Crow✌️
@@ASTHECROWFLIESHIKING ha ent used it in the field yet.
Nothing replaces new gear smell like bear spray XD
