    I was in an orchestra awhile back and we played this with a really good flutist. The middle movement is just incredibly beautiful. The first and last movements are ridiculously crazy. 1930s French music. Ibert was a great talent though. Occasionally he'd turn out a really, really splendid movement like this one.

      Yes, the 2nd movement is ravishingly beautiful and pastoral and the 3rd movement is nuts. French music is so hard to play well. You have to be a real musician to play it. Not even necessarily French, but you have to either be naturally brilliant or have a great teacher who also knows how to play French music teaching you about shaping the phrases and tone coloring. Far from easy.
