We have a beautiful song in Poland about this battle saying that the poppies growing on the slopes of Mount Cassino are red with Polish blood. When I was a child, an old man lived in my hometown, a hero from Mount Cassino, who always wore orders pinned to his jacket. I never saw him talk to anyone, maybe because I was a kid and didn't care. However, I remember one thing clearly. Every week, on Thursday evening, this man walked along the street where we lived and sang "Red poppies from Monte Cassino" in a beautiful solemn voice. When I asked my father why he was doing this, he replied that it was on a Thursday many years ago that this man went to give his life for his country so far away from him. He returned but all his friends stayed there forever. From that day on, I always waited for him at the window and listened to this beautiful song until one Thursday no one sang anymore. I still have tears in my eyes when I hear this song.

Or maybe its to keep it from getting demonetized and age restricted, therefore reaching way less people. It's a trade-off between the channel being able to show these docs at all and blurring dead bodies. Personally, I don't need to see dead bodies to know war is horrible.

Interesting and informative. Excellent photography job making it easier for viewers to better understand what the orator was describing. Historians did a very good job presenting actual facts from fiction. Class A research project. Rough combat operations on both sides. Special thanks to the allied forces for fighting/perishing/surviving those fierce/horrible combat operations. Yet still went forward knowing certain death/debilitating wounds were often possible. That's determination to succeed. Also the veteran guest speakers sharing their combat experiences. Making this documentary more authentic and possible. Bless all the allied forces who made eventual victory over the axis powers.

Always amazes me that these docos made in the UK never even bother to seek out or interview NZ soldiers who fought very long and hard at Cassino! The 28th Maori Battalion took heavy casualties on the assault of the town in the 3rd battle! 5 NZ tanks actually got to the Monastery up the Cavendish Road, and surprised the defenders - but had no supporting infantry and were all destroyed by anti-tank fire! It was NZ's WW2 Passchendaele - and is rightly remembered as such here!

The MG 42 machine gun was no joke. It could vomit out twenty two bullets per second. I pity the poor bastards you had to try conclusion with that particular weapon. Allied with 8.8 cm Flack guns and 82 mm mortars, the defensive firepower the Allies had to overcome was daunting. And that does not even include the artillery, S mines, and troops, the Germans could bring to the table.

Mark Clark was not the most capable General in the Army. Finally, after all the blood and death, he listened and began the long term air campaign to block supplies such as food/ammunition/fuel.
This air campaign combined with no let up on the military on that line made the entire difference.

"Abt." or "Abteilung" doesn't necessarily mean 500 men. It (BASICALLY) means just "detachment" or (if you're willing to split hair in four) some unit that has been "DETACHED" or "SEPARATED" from it's main-core to execute a particular task. In the War the Germans used to give that designation to PLENTY of units with different task & purposes and those could range fron 50-60 men to more than a thousand. One example among many ! - the German "Schwere Panzer Abteilungen" (the famous "HEAVY ARMOURED BATTALLIONS" - both from the W-SS as well as the Wehrmacht).
