    It appears to me the blocks are not installed properly. if you install a 90 degree twist shackle to the broken traveler block, the sheet leaving the block will align towards the side without causing force against the side of the block. Turn that block 90 degrees an reinstall the sheet through the blocks so that they all align up properly. Doing this will change the block pullies on the traveler to the horizontal position and both blocks will now be in horizontal position. Everything will line up with no friction or rubbing of the sheet. I know they make those shackles because I had one on my boat.

    No matter what you do, you will continually have failures of those Lewmar blocks. We've been through many of them. To the point where Lewmar is no longer allowed on the boat. They are just crap product. As they break, change them to Harken or Antal (or probably anything other than Lewmar).

    • @tracyoliver550
      @tracyoliver550 21 час назад

      We’ve had similar disappointing performance w Harken. During mast/sail development on A-cats, load cells were used on the mainsheet and repeated Harken Carbo block failure at just over 50% of their published working loads were experienced (dynamic loads were taken into account). Bottom line, don’t believe their numbers and oversize critical systems. Great video as usual!

    I once had a house in Bocas del Toro. I had to explain to my caretaker that 8:00 meant 8:00, not 8:30 or whenever he chose to show up. I also found that just because a worker agreed to do a job did not mean he would ever show up to do it. They seem to have an aversion to saying no.

    Love this video and this channel! The dolphins leading you to port is cool. I've heard one reason they do this is because it provides them safe passage. They have blind spots above their heads, behind their dorsal fin, and behind their tail and "leading" a boat from the bow protects their blind spots and makes them feel safe from attack. I've heard many other reasons too like, opportunistic feeding on discarded bait, the wake from the bow makes travel more efficient and so on... I'm curious, why do y'all think dolphins swim in front of ships?

    Be careful in Colon. When we were there waiting to go through the Canal, two separate cruisers were robbed coming back from the store, one at knife point and one at gun point. A policeman who happened to be nearby shot the one attacker. At the market, there were a bunch of 20 something young men in black pants, white shirts and machine guns guarding the cash registers…not very inviting. Find a taxi driver and stay with them…they know the layout and how to remain safe. Panama City was not as bad.

    The reason you guys are catching small Tuna is your not running deep enough, when you trawl for surface fish you catch the small ones because they feed closer to the surface because the bait is smaller. Try stopping in a spot where there is a big drop off in depth and runn your line about 300-600 Ft deep and use bait closed to the size of the tuna your catching. Happy fishing

    • @robertphillips5851
      @robertphillips5851 2 дня назад

      Which is a good thing because they don't have the tackle to catch anything much more than about 10 pounds. A tuna will exert much more than it's weight.

    Billy, I think you are the most knowledgeable fisherman among the sailing channels so you might know the answers to these burning questions. What kinds of fish swim in schools vs loners? I know you’re on passage and don’t want to turn around, but if you did, and made several passes through an area where the rest of the school. Would it be reasonable to expect to catch others. Also, I wonder for loners who aren’t in schools how close you would have to get to them to let them be aware of your lure.

      Blackfin tuna in Florida have a bag limit, no size limit. 2 per person or 10 per vessel whichever is greater…
      Obviously we are not in Florida but if there are no set limits where we are we still like to make sure we are in that range because most counties do not have the resources for the research, education, and recourses that FWC and NOAA have to inact and implant the size limits.
      Our other go to resource is
      The International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT).
      Which does not have specific, detailed rules for blackfin tuna in the same way it does for other tuna species like bluefin tuna or yellowfin tuna.
      So with that in mind we were well within our own established quota to do our small parts to not aid in the over fishing issue.
      Smaller tuna have less potential for mercury and since pelagic fish is one of our main recourses for food that is a pretty big deal for us.
      Blackfin tuna also reach sexual maturity and are able to reproduce between 1 to 2 years and at around 12-16 inches. Which also means that these ones even though they are smaller than what most people think of when they think Tuna should have already had the chance to aid the population.
      We care about the ocean and everything that lives in it and we always try our best to do our part to keep her thriving.
