Go to Anglesey! Beaumaris castle is the ‘classic’ medieval castle, there are beautiful beaches all around the island and there is so much visible history from Neolithic burial chambers, Iron Age villages, remains of a Roman for (Holyhead), medieval monastery (Penmon)...and so much more. Menai Bridge is a bit of a foodie paradise too.
The sad thing with Gwrych Castle is that it was still pretty much intact in the late 1980s. It was then bought by an American who just wanted to be able to say he owned a castle in the UK, but he never actually did anything with it. Squatters moved, stripped it of anything they could sell, including the roofing materials, and the weather took hold and ruined it. I've not been up there for about 13 or 14 years. Back then it was pretty much a shell filled with rubble. Going by this video, the GCPT have done a remarkable job so far in restoring it.
Bodelwyddan Castle Is about as close to being a proper castle as McDonalds is to being a Michelin starred restaurant, it's a country house at best. No mention of Caernarfon, Harlech, Dolbadarn, Beaumaris etc...
It's a pity you decided not to go into the real castle amongst the three (Conwy) you missed a treat well worth £9.00 Built 1277-1307 for Edward 1st. Nice choice of music and great video guys (DIOLCH).
Yep. And they noticed that the harbour was right alongside the castle - that fact was integral to the victory of the English over the Welsh, as it meant they could reinforce and supply the troops via the sea rather than the land where they could be easily attacked by the Welsh armies. While I still don't like the fact that my ancestors lost, you can't argue that the English/French built some pretty amazing castles!
