- If you are a pilot, chances are you've been asked if flying your own plane is faster than flying a commercial airliner. I've decided to put this to test: my friends flew on an airliner while my wife and I took our Cirrus SR22. We flew from Republic Airport (KFRG) in Farmingdale, NY to Mont-Tremblant International Airport (CYFJ) in La Macaza, Quebec. Which do you think will be faster door to door? This is a very helpful video for me as I try to figure out what kind of mission is best flown in a piston single - aside from just evaluating the pure flight time, which only tells a part of the story. It seems like most east coast flights take at least no longer. When you throw in the convenience of not having to deal with a commercial airport I'm pretty sold.

Cool video. In this case they found a direct flight but if you have to layover anywhere the SR is still the best option. Just think if you did this in the SF50!

Thanks! I have comparable experience going to CHS. Although it’s close to 4 hours in air going down, (and my wife without commercial airline delays) I have arrived before her by roughly 30mins and that is with us both landing at CHS. However leaving CHS and flying back into ISP she beats me by 45 mins. So it the JFK process even with TSA pre check that gives me the advantage on way down but leaving CHS is much more enjoyable and without delay so she significantly beats me when comparing the two legs. Flying to Mont-Tremblant CYFJ later this week for a short stop on our way from CYOO to CYQB (Quebec City).
CYFJ is such a nice approach from the north.

Last week my wife flew from KMIA to KBOS on American Airlines and I flew from KTMB to KBED (both executive airports outside of the larger cities of Miami and Boston) in my TBM. We both left the house at the same time and I landed a few minutes after she did. I had the TBM loaded with furniture and other items to move my daughter into college in Boston. The TBM flies at 330 TAS and the Airbus 500+(???), but I made up time by avoiding security and waiting in the que to board and deplane. She had a bathroom on board and I peed in a Gatorade bottle.
That’s awesome! I’m tired of getting “Freedom Searched” by useless and often over zealous TSA agents.

Definitely the fun advantage goes to the Cirrus SR22. The financial difference and comfort level goes to the commercial flight. The difference between buying a Cirrus vs a commercial plane ticket would leave you enough $$ left over to buy another Ferrari. But then, the Ferrari isn't the point. Thanks for the trip!

That's the same argument I used with my dad 60 years ago! He countered with a) if you have the cash flow and capital to make the investment and pay for maintenance and upkeep, b) are willing to limit yourself in terms of loading, as in "What if I want to take 6 people along with me?", c) overall safety: part 121 is safer; d) comfort: a pressurized cabin, in a jet, in "the levels" is quieter and more comfortable (and you have toilets!). On the other hand, if you like or love flying, and you have a Cirrus or Bonanza or Centurion, and have one or maybe two adult passengers, then, for short to medium distances, and fair to moderate weather, then yes the plane is faster for that trip distance. Of course, you might also want to compare this trip to a TBM or Pilatus PC 12, or Cirrus jet, and then SR22 class loses!

A friend flies around for consulting work. He gives customers the choice of flying him commercial or having him take his plane and bill them. It comes out about the same; commercial is slower and he bills more for his time, but flying private, he bills for the use of his plane. So after factoring the value of your own time and the costs of operating your aircraft, the overall costs are very similar.

Great video man! I actually flew the SR20 out of Republic yesterday for my first time. (Nassau Flyers) What an amazing plane, and experience. Totally different experience than the piper Cherokee Cruiser I learned in 20 years ago!!

If you are primarily doing $100 hamburgers or you fly less than 10 hours per month, it’s cheaper to rent.
So I got my private 20 years ago at Farmingdale in a Cherokee cruiser. I’m getting back to flying now. I flew the SR20 this week and it was amazing. Any recommendations regarding doing that at Republic or Macarthur? Any info is appreciated
I recall one flight school at KISP has a SR20 G2 which has the older Avidyne avionics. KFRG has an authorized Cirrus Training Center called Nassau Flyers. These are the two only options unless you want to go to NJ (P6 Aviation) or White Plains (Performance). I would highly recommend you read the reviews of these schools carefully. Just b/c a school has lower rates, make sure the school doesn’t “milk” the student.

Great video! I live in a small town and the closest major airport is an hour and a half away. Its almost always faster like you said unless it is over 800 or so miles. Would love to see a video explaining the whole Canada customs by phone. I live in the South and haven't flown in to Canada yet but would love to get your take on it.

Are you IFR rated? I think on most days I would fly myself as well but if it was moderate to severe icing I'd probably fly commercial. You probably encounter more icing conditions up there than we do down here in Texas.

I’m not a pilot, but noticed you did not pull the safety pin for your parachute during pre flight checks.
It was removed you can see it on the dash area. Placard is mandatory to be on.
Awesome! I'm a student pilot a few weeks away from a solo in a Cirrus SR-20. I think that recording my flights would be helpful to learn from my mistakes. Would you mind sharing what kind of equipment you use to get the audio and video?
Sure thing: I use a GoPro Max 360 suctioned to the front windshield and a GoPro Hero 8 mounted to the Oxygen Port (you will need to mount to an expandable pole, since the 20 doesn’t have O2 Ports). I also have an audio cable (available at most aviation shops like Sporty’s) that plugs into the Hero 8. Good luck on your solo…you got this! ✌️🤙

I was thinking of mounting the Hero 8 to the tie-down on the underside of the tail. My reasoning being: I'm trying to watch my flares, and I'm also interested in the ground effect on a soft field simulation. Have you ever tried to mount a camera on the outside of a Cirrus? I'm afraid to ask my CFI if she'll even allow it.

OMG I'm shocked you didn't remove the CAPS cover which means the pin was still in, my heart was racing worried you would have an emergency and need to deploy the chute. Whew that was close :O)
CAPS pin was removed (part of the check list) and sitting in the front…if you can see the cover you can see the pin. The CAPS Handle Deployment Cover has to be in place per POH which is the reason why it’s there.
@@SlowAsianDriver Well I was just joking with you but I didn't know that. Usually when I watch videos of Cirrus flying I can see the handle. Also going to go down to my local Cirrus training center here in SLC and see about finding a partner to buy my very own. The only way I think I can afford to get back into it.

Hi. Great idea for a film. Only observation I’m curious to know, the checklist for use of CAPS says remove the cover, when you go to use it, but I was taught by my CSIP to remove the cover just before flight so it’s more accessible and understandable by passengers. Have you heard that before?
Yes, CSIP tends to tell you to remove the cover...however the cover/placard MUST be in view at all times as it's part of the mandatory equipment. Sometimes the CSIP will wedge the card above the handle, other times they will only velcro two of the four points. Both methods will damage the placard over time. Removing the CAPS pin is part of my preflight checklist...it actually appears in two different sections of the checklist. I choose to leave the cover velcroed on all four points to prevent it from falling off during turbulence.

Cirrus SR operating cost is $400/hr round trip was 5.4 hours total plus $150 taxi to the hotel, plus landing, handling, ramp and other fees is another $200. Total is $2,510 for the entire plane. It’s always more expensive to fly the Cirrus.
But those 4 people can’t “legally” split costs which would bend the charter (part 135 rules). Unless you can convince them every time you fly you were all going that direction anyways.
@@TheReadBaron91 FAR 61.113(c) allows a private pilot to accept pro-rata reimbursement from passengers for fuel, oil and airport expenditures, or aircraft rental fees, but not other costs of aircraft ownership. You are correct the pilot cannot advertise for passengers and act like a charter service, but taking friends along on a flight like this should easily fit under 61.113.

Did you have to register your plane and comm before flying to Canada? Also does Mont Tremblant have the same pre clearance like Toronto does so you can fly directly from any airport in the U S without doing any immigration first? A couple airports in Bahamas have that also.
I had to get a Radio Station license for the plane and a limited radio license for me. Both can be done through FCC’s website and takes 24 hours. You need to file a departure clearance with US CBP (but you don’t need to call on the outbound), and you need to call CANPASS before you arrive and then call them again once you land. Mont-Tremblant is an Airport of Entry as long as the plane has less than 15 people. If you go tot he description of video, you’ll find a link to AOPA’s website that gives detailed instruction on flying to and back from Canada. It’s much easier than I had expected.

Why didn't you just cancel IFR when you had the field in sight?
B/c I was crossing the border and have to be on an IFR plan the entire time.

Yes. CAPS pin removal is part of the checklist.
But it appears you left your caps cover over the handle. It’s best to move it so that the Velcro covers the back two tabs. That way you can read the instructions as well as have immediate access to the handle. Great video in a top notch plane.
Thank you. I know attaching the cover to the two back tabs is how a lot of people were taught, but in any turbulence the cover will bounce off…and that cover is a required equipment for flight. During our training at Cirrus we specifically asked about this and the response is put it back on all four tabs.

@@SlowAsianDriver if those 4 others could have flown in your SR22 for just $500 more than commercial and saved 12 man-hours’ time, that’s a complete no brainer!
Just keep in mind that 3 other people has to go to the same event as me. Otherwise it becomes a charter and I can’t do it legally.
Did Canada require proof of vaccination for covid?
Yes. I downloaded ArriveCAN on the phone and uploaded my proof of vaccination. There are exemptions and are listed in the ArriveCAN.

CAPS cover on the whole flight?
Per POH CAPS placard is a required item and must be displayed.
@@SlowAsianDriver you can still display the placard, while exposing and readying the handle. Best practice would be remove cover and replace it 180° backwards such that rear cover Velcro is attached to rear headliner Velcro, with previously forward facing cover Velcro now at. Prior to flight, remove CAPS safety pin, and replace after landing. If you need it (hope you never do), you won't want to be fumbling past the cover and the safety.
Don't take random Internet guy's advice, though; find your favorite
CSIP and ask them

I thought SR22 cruises at 170kts.
At Rich of Peak it will easily cruise at 170+ TAS...with a fuel flow of 17~18 GPH. At Lean of Peak, it will cruise around 160 TAS with a fuel flow of 12.5~13 GPH. Most of Cirrus drivers fly LOP.

“Cancel IFR”
Guess who forgot to cancel once landed? This guy. 🤦🏻♂️. Between clearing the Canadian Custom and wife wanna get to the hotel. Complete forgot until 2 hours later. But the guys couldn’t be nicer.

Ha ha. I meant if it’s a beautiful day and he won’t clear you a vis approach for a technicality, just say the magic words and be done with him. You can cnx IFR at any time as long as you have the required VFR cloud clearance. P.S. Tower is supposed to close your IFR flight plan upon landing.
Since I was crossing the border I had to be on an IFR plan the entire time. CYFJ also didn’t have a tower hence I had to cancel on the ground.

Why can’t you file VFR from the continental US to Canada? As long as you talk to ATC w/mode C and have a squawk. If you are on an IFR flight plan it would help the controller out to cnx once in Class G since they can’t provide separation. Maybe I’m missing something.
