im not from the states so know nothing about calarts, but nonetheless youve inspired me to start a sketchbook of my own. i loved how you extended the life drawings just the tad to make it feel complete and really enjoyed the dynamicism (?) of how you captured the Tillana. I always thought that sketchbooks were intimidating and ironically perfectionistic, but seeing your little commentary here and there made me realise its just little excerpts of daily life and how youre thinking. thank you!
I'm so glad! Def go for it!! And I get exactly what you're saying about feeling like sketchbooks need to be perfect but I've realised that the lesser expectations I have for myself the more I'm able to focus on the art itself - resulting in a better looking sketchbook just cuz I'm not stressing lol
amazing sketchbook, i really love your stylization of figures & characters you make. congratulations on your acceptance, so so awesome for you 🤩 the future holds bright & beautiful things
Congrats on getting into CalArts! I’m 14, in about 3-4 years I wish to. Apply for the Animation program, would you think I still have time to perfect my art skills until then? Also amazing sketchbook!
Thank you sm!! And to answer your question, ABSOLUTELY and take this from me cuz even though I've always been drawing since I was younger, at exactly 14 is when I seriously started to practice my fundamentals and actively try to improve my skills. So I'd say you're making very good time by starting now! I wish you all the best!!
Thank you so much!! I didn't specifically go to any prep classes for this so I'll give you a list of youtubers that helped me so so much - Meppity for Calarts specific advice, Love Life Drawing for figure drawing, Sakuraopal for Calarts specific portfolio advice and the rest was pretty much just binge watching other accepted sketchbook videos :)
hiiiii your sketchbook is like so so good!! Im also applying to CalArts as well and a question I've seen no one has asked is, how did you dealt with motivation? When you were making the portfolio did you do a schedule or was it more spontaneous? What was your workflow usually like? Thanks!!
Heyy thank you so much!! To answer your questions, lemme just start off by saying that my schedule was concerningly close to nonexistent. I technically worked in the sketchbook for 5 months but about 40% of it was completed in the last 2-ish weeks before the early action deadline. I generally allowed myself to draw whenever I felt like it before those last few weeks though - so sometimes I'd draw 4 spreads a day and sometimes it'll only be half a page. It was super spontaneous and dependent on my motivation levels (which luckily worked out for me at the end). This was more or less the case with the rest of my portfolio too. But with this in mind, I'd still recommend always starting with a plan. It doesn't have to be too detailed or restricting but it'll really help to have some sort of structure to manage your time even when the deadline is far so definitely strive for that if you can. Good luck!!
