    Here it is, the historic house tour to end all historic house tours (not literally, obviously). As a sign of thanks to all our friends here on RUclips we have arranged a special, never before allowed private home tour of the incomparable Stanton Hall in Natchez Ms.
    This 14,000 antebellum mansion (never a plantation home) is the pinnacle of the Natchez form, and has been lovingly restored and maintained by the ladies of the Pilgrimage Garden Club for the last eighty-two years. Were it not for the tireless work of the Pilgrimage Garden Club Stanton Hall, Longwood, and many other of the architectural masterpieces found only in this city would have been lost. We cannot thank the members enough for allowing us to share this treasure with you, and to member and tour guide Judy who takes us through the home today.
    The palatial proportions of Stanton Hall and the variety of its Victorian
    detail represent antebellum opulence rarely achieved and more rarely
    maintained. Built for Frederick Stanton, a Cotton broker, in the years
    1851-57, the construction project is reputed to have required a
    chartered vessel from Europe to bring the carved moldings, cast and
    wrought iron, exterior ornament and fence, Carrara marble mantelpieces,
    bronze chandeliers, gold-framed mirrors, silver hardware, and appropriate
    furniture. More successful as a showplace than a residence, Stanton
    Hall continues to impress the visitors who tour it daily as a museum.
    The house dominates an urban hilltop site which is a
    full block square. The surrounding iron fence has elaborate gate posts
    with a lyre motif. Four giant order fluted columns with modified
    Corinthian capitals maintain the tradition of Natchez porticoes with an
    added richness. Pilasters at the large sidelighted entrance have tra-
    ditional Corinthian caps. Iron lace railings decorate both levels of
    the portico and a two-story gallery on the west elevation. The principal
    mass of the house is plastered and painted white with dark green shutters
    Above the hip roof is a large belvedere with two arched openings on each
    side and an overhanging bracketed cornice.
    The anterior also combines classicism with more ornate styles. Its scale
    is evident in the central hall which is 16 feet wide and 72 feet long.
    All the doors on the first floor have heavy Greek frames with anthemion
    bands and acroteria-ornamented cornices. The length of the hall is
    broken only by an elliptical arch supported on consoles. The ballroom,
    at the right, is similarly divided by a triple arch with foliated corbels
    and pendants. The five first-floor mantels are of white Carrara marble
    richly carved with fruits and flowers. Bronze chandeliers with etched
    glass diffusing shades hang from plaster rosettes in each room. Each
    chandelier has a unique design; those in the dining room represent the
    Natchez Indians in battle array. By opening the sliding doors between
    the ballroom and music room, the entire length of the house is infinitely
    extended in immense gold-framed mirrors which face each other 72 feet
    apart.
    To the left of the central hall a stairhall separates the library at the
    front from the dining room at the rear. Stairs begin at the grade level
    porte-cochere and rise to the attic below the belvedere. Bedrooms on
    the second floor repeat the scale of the first floor but with simplified
    moldings and black marble mantels.
    A service wing at the rear is less extensive than originally and con-
    tains bathrooms, a caretaker's apartment, and the shop and office
    required in its present function as a museum house. Plantings, particu-
    larly live oak trees, on the front of the property have matured to a
    beauty not experienced by the original owners. The rear of the property
    includes parking area, restaurant and swimming pool for the Pilgrimage
    Garden Club.
    Take advantage of light crowds and the temperate weather and visit Natchez in January! Her homes will be ready for you to tour, and her people can't wait to show you some Southern Hospitality
    Named Belfast by Frederick Stanton, the cotton broker who built it in
    1851-58, the house had been completed only a short while when he died.
    Its institutional scale made it a maintenance burden to his descendants.
    In the 1890s it became the Stanton College for Young Ladies. In 1940,
    after a variety of uses, it was purchased by the Pilgrimage Garden Club
    and restored as their headquarters.

      Established titles is a scam! You can't buy land from third parties and titles. titles are inherited not bought or given to you buy the queen or king. Plus there's no coat of arms. Where's proof of the tree they planted?

      You probably didn't see, they are a scam. You can't change your name, they don't give you "land" and they don't provide any records of actually donating. The company is based out of china.

      Andres Insurriaga, in the ‘60’s Stanton Hall was available for guests to stay overnight but that isn’t the case today. However there are other antebellum homes in Natchez with rooms available. Some friends and I recently stayed at Brandon Hall.

    Huge, beautiful home, with every pristine detail you could want. From the roses on the Corinthian capitals, to the white marble fireplaces, just incredible. Each of the gasoliers is a masterpiece, especially the 'Iron Throne' fixture in Mr. Stanton's study. I even noted keyhole covers on some of the doors, to keep out prying eyes. Interesting, but not surprising to learn it was used in the North and South mini-series. Plenty of room for hoop skirts during Balls. I'm thankful for the many unnamed workers and craftsmen who built this incredible place, and the organization that restored and maintained it. Thank you for arranging this tour.

    I can’t say how much I love this channel, it’s like family vacation. My dad was a teacher. They would ask each of us what we wanted to see within a geographical area and then the history got mixed in. We all complained, until the tour stared…us kids asked as much as the adults. Thanks for the great memories! More of this needed mixed in at schools.

    I LOVE Stanton Hall. I could spend all day just studying the details on the Cornelius & Baker chandeliers. It is so rare to also have all the wall sconces intact. When I was a little kid, my "internet" was a set of World Book encyclopedias. In the "house" section, there was a photo of Stanton Hall, and a line drawing of the Carson mansion in Eureka, California. Those became my idea of what a house should look like. But you have to go to Stanton Hall in person to feel the massive scale (17-foot ceilings).

    I was there in the 1970`s- it was gorgeous. But it looks even better now. They`ve added the carpeting in the parlor and reupholstered the entire Meeks parlor set and added a lot of the original furniture that I didn`t get to see. Out front on the sidewalk was a little old woman and her husband (he was sitting on the wall by the fence). She was selling homemade pralines. It was a really hot day and she looked exhausted and said when she finished selling them, they were going home and sit in the cool shade. I bought all the rest she had and told them to go home and relax. They got a very big kick out of it and I got some of the best pralines I`ve ever had. Several months later, I saw an article about Natchez in one of my mother`s women`s magazines and there was a picture of that same woman out front of Stanton Hall. I got a very big kick out of that!! Man, I love Natchez.

    • @tsicby
      @tsicby 5 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, in fact one of the most spectacular plantation homes you can tour takes you up into the attic where it's been untouched since Union troops came through and scared away the construction workers who dropped everything and fled. You can see the carpentry tools flung to the floor and lumber stacked up. Completely untouched except for the regular dusting they do. The entire town of Natchez is like that. Untouched by the Civil War. Like travelling back in time.

    Please do a video discussing the situation with Beechwood Hall in Tennessee. It's a darned shame what's happening to it.
    If you aren't familiar, Beechwood Hall is an antebellum home that was once owned by Hank Williams and later by Faith Hill and Tim McGraw. The new owners have decided to start the needless process of demolition. There is currently a move to try and halt the demolition.

    • @anteeker
      @anteeker Год назад +4

      I saw that. Kid Rock is trying to get everyone`s attention and try to save this house. It`s supposed to be listed as a National Landmark. Why isn`t that protecting it? If it isn`t, then what is the use in having a building listed.

    • @gigicostlow4414
      @gigicostlow4414 Год назад +1

      The owner said he has no current plans to demolish the house. He had a part of the house that was built in 1970 demolished because it was not part of the original house and I imagine it was probably in bad shape. He also had the banister removed and stored in a protected place because it was one of the few original things that didn't have water damage. The house is in horrible shape but he is working with the Williamson County Heritage Foundation to see what can be done with it if anything can be. The only thing historically significant about the house is it survived the Civil War. While that's important you also have to consider if it's worth pouring millions of dollars into a home. There's a 2 story log home built in 1850 on the property that Faith and Tim restored and lived in. They did nothing to preserve Beechwood and never lived in it. Hank Williams never lived there. He kept his horses there and hunted there but he never lived there. Beechwood needed restoring even when he owned it. Something he planned on doing but never did. He only owned the property for about a year.

      @gigicostlow4414 Год назад

      @@anteeker There's no restrictions on a listed property that is not owned by the federal government or doesn't get some sort of federal funding. Having a house listed provides history of the house (date, builder/owner, size, architecture style and design, any later additions etc) and it can help with getting funding for preservation/restoration of the property.

    Reading the history of this place seems to have a common story with these large, lavish gilded age era mansions and estates. Those rich mogals built these places, then when they passed their descendants didn't want them with the burden of upkeep and maintenance, they were just too big. They are usually taken over by some organization or government agency to be restored and maintained, in this case the Pilgrimage Garden Club. Glad to see it, beutiful and historic.

    Love seeing these and the explanation's. After watching your chanel for a while Im beginning to recognise and understand architectural elements now. Well done as always.

    Toured this home when I was in Natchez in the 90's. It's an impressive home right in the town center. Natchez is unusual because there are antebellum mansions and plantation homes everywhere untouched by the destruction of the civil war. Many towns put up plague quarantine signs to keep Union troops from coming through. I highly recommend you visit, it's like travelling back in time.

      The reality is that Natchez is one of the few places in the US where you can explore our entire architectural history as a nation. We have indigenous sites, Spanish/French/British Territorial period architecture, Colonial and Federal architecture with beautiful Neo-Classical examples, Greek Revival, Gothic, Italianate, all the way through mid-mod. For an architecture lover it’s a one of a kind destination!

      @@OurRestorationNation I definitely need to get another trip in. Two days wasn't enough to see it all and still have time to soke up the local culture.
