Who else owns a Bolt?
I do. Also in AL. Going to get another one (EUV this time). Not sure what happened to my previous comment.
I did, it got bought back due to the battery recall and I bought a Model 3 Performance. Done with slow charging.
How do you like the tesla?
@@TTorres1183 Massively better, our average stop 18 minutes driving from Chicago to Florida. 120-140 miles between them
Tesla fast charging it far better. I must agree. Just alot more money for the car.
The 50kw charger would have been sufficient. The Bolt can only accept a MAX charge of 55Kw. If you recall your first charge rate of 32Kw, that is normal for the Bolt. It is recommended to charge only to 70% at DCFC. The speed of charge slows down considerably as you approach 80% and above. For road trips, plan your charging stops to get you to 70% and move to the next station.
Thanks for the info!
The 50kw was a Chademo charger. Not sure if he has that adapter.
@@sortingsin So far as I am aware there are no CHAdeMO adapters for CCS but if possible please leave the CHAdeMO charger available for any potential CHAdeMO vehicles. Since each station usually only has 1 it can lead to extended charge times for Leaf owners although don't go out of your way to avoid using it if the station is full.
Connecting to a charger above 55kWh does have the advantage of being able to charge at full speed and power stuff like climate and other stuff.
We love our Bolt. I agree with the previous post. When the charge slows stop and drive to the next charging station. Also double check the next station to make sure their chargers are working. This will save you money and time charging.
Talking to people at charging stations and seeing other EVs is unexpectedly one of my favorite parts of owning an EV. I sometimes drive past the EVGo chargers in my area just to see what it charging there. 😂
Nice! I took it 1100 miles from Colorado Springs to Chicago. No issues😁
I just put a deposit on a 2023 Bolt a couple of days ago. Hopefully I'll take delivery in a couple of months. I'm not much of a road tripper, but most of the videos I've seen it's probably a good idea to prepare for at least an hour or so at the charging station. If I do go on a road trip and it normally takes 5 hours in an ice car I'll leave 3 hours earlier plan for an 8 hour trip. I'll download a few movies from my Netflix app and watch movies while I wait. For me charging speeds on the Bolt is a non issue. Gr8 vid. 🚙 🇺🇸
Thanks for watching
Did you get it yet?
@@cainesfrank Not yet. Still waiting.
Your road trip videos are so charming. I live in the Boston area and have a Hyundai Kona EV, but I went to high school in Opelika and my parents live in Auburn. Whenever I visit I talk about EV's and that it would be possible to drive around Alabama in an EV, and they won't believe it. Great to see someone showing it!
The Bolt EUV is an awesome commuter/urban car. Charge overnight and drive everyday. The next gen Bolt should address the slow charging issue. Thanks for the video!
12 cents KW is cheap! its 3-4x that in California.
Thanks for a real life video. We just bought a 2023 bolt EUV and love it.
Generally on road trips, you want to pull into a charger with low state of charge (around 10%) and charge up to maybe 50%, which should be enough to get you a decent distance up the road to the next charger.
It sounds counterintuitive, but charging up to 80% each time generally results in a longer overall trip time.
We definitely need to teach charging speeds and charging etiquette. When he said they had 350 units I'm like.....NOOOOOOO.....LOL. hour charge time is brutal, but if it's only a few times a year it's doable. I love the looks of the EUV!!
yes people need to practice that more
When the battery is low, I charge in chargepoint 62.5kw, the highest 52kw is connected for one minute and then I fall to 44kw! Have not experienced 50kw continuous input to the battery 50%! Evgo 50kw, the highest speed 44kw, quite stable to about 50%! You can try to do a chargepoint 62.5kw charging pile charging test! This is 2023 bolt euv lt.
Super nice vehicle! Miss you guys!
We miss you!
We’ve been road tripping our 2017 Bolt EV for a number of years. Actually EA didn’t exist when we first bought the vehicle. The Bolt does charge slowly, max of 54 kW when under 50% SOC. Over 50% it tapers around 35 Kw and slows to a crawl about 75-80
How many miles do you have on your bolt?
About 70,000. The HV battery is a little less than a year old
The 50kw charger would be fine as you’re capped at a max charge rate of 55kw anyway. Great video, thanks for sharing.
I'm currently buying a new EUV from a dealer in Fort Payne, and I will be driving it back to Atmore. I will be my first experience using public charger. I'm thinking I can stop at the EA in Pelham, and also the one in Greenville, and it'll get me home.... hopefully.
Those chargers have been reliable for us
You have some additional options: Tesla MagicDocks in Pelham and Greeneville.
@@M_dot202 just learned about those. No issues with those two EA stations though.
For Bolt road trips you're better off running it down to 10% and only charging up to 50% on DCFC on the way if possible. Bolts (already slow) charge speed drops off a cliff after 50%. It may not be possible depending on charger spacing where you are, but I'm regularly doing a few hundred miles and not spending more than 25-30min at chargers at each stop.
So I have been told that… our EA chargers are spaced out to far for me to achieve that.
@@TTorres1183 ah, that sucks. I might just be lucky that Chargepoint is the main non Tesla charge network where I am.
Hmm. Added about 130 miles of range for just $6.42. Not bad. My 32 mpg ICE would have needed about 4 gallons of gas for this, about $12. My Leaf struggles to get 3.7 miles per kWh when its cold
Costs me about $6 on my Prius and not have to camp out at Walmart
The 50kw plug you were looking at is Chademo. You cant use it with your Bolt. The blue handle is the give away. However, lots of EVgo machines are 50 kw which is fine for the Bolt. Unless there is nothing else available, leave the higher powered machines for the cars that can charge faster.
EA is notoriously unreliable so make sure to check on the apps before you count on them being up
Thanks for the info!
Love watching EV road trip videos! You can also use the app a better route planner to help plan out EV road trips too.
Yessir, got it and use of all the time!
Me too!
Bought a new 2022 Bolt EUV Premier in mid-December.
We have yet to do our first road trip. We often go to Portland, OR. Should be able to do it on one charge (~210 mi), but there are a couple good charging spots along the way, if needed.
Very happy with our Bolt so far. The slower DC charging is unfortunate, but not too much of an issue for us as we average only about 15 miles per day around town (we don't even have our Level 2 charger outlet installed yet -- may not even need it!).
The lvl 2 charger at home is a must for us. We will be going on our second road trip next week and we plan to film the process!
@@TTorres1183 It's definitely in the works (waiting for a Qmerit callback); I hope our breaker box has the capacity. I would like a 60A circuit for a higher output charger, but will settle for a 40A circuit and use the dual charger that came with the Bolt. If the box is maxed out, may try the SplitVolt device that will "smartly" share our dryer receptacle (which is inside the house on the other side of the garage wall). Thoughts? Advice?
BTW, I'm enjoying your road trip videos. Gives me a good feel for what to expect (and look out for) when we hit the road. Thanks.
I’d asked for a 50amp breaker… I wouldn’t want to share circuit with the dryer. Doesn’t seem safe.
I had to go +150 miles to get my Bolt EV. How far did you have to get to get your EUV?
Anyone know why the Bolt only pulled in 30kw per hour instead of the rated 50?
I seen people camping in bolts while charging. Looks like fun?
Black? Nice!
Black
Doesnt the Bolt max out at 55kw? So isnt the 50kw enough?
That is the unfortunate situation with the Bolt’s charge curve. You spend too much time waiting at the charger.
This seems like a terrible experience. I’m gonna get a Bolt EV in March, but definitely keeping my truck for long trips.
Do you guys use A Better Rout Planner (ABRP)?
Of course
12c per Kwh on DC Fast charging? How?
Best way to turn a short 3 hour trip into an all-day affair.
Yeah, I’m sure you drive 130mph wherever you go!! 🤣
I like the Bolt. The price now is also much better. And you get the tac break. However, my 2015 Golf TDI consistently gets 50+ mpg on the highway and more in summer. So at 4.50/gallon I would have spent 34 bucks. Hmmm doesn't seem worth it for me to trade in my TDI for a Bolt.
True the Golf TDI is a longtime favorite of mine. The reason to get a bolt would not be performance vs the TDI but the horrendously dirty NOx and other emissions. VW did try to fraudulently cover that up which resulted in Dieselgate. Which I guess did result in Electrify America/Canada as a penalty to VW.
What app can you use to watch Netflix and RUclips on the screen?

Question why only charge to 80 on long trips.?
That more than enough to get to the next station
It really would have been much more informative if you could have given us the number of miles driven before each charge
Noted
FYI ... I was told not to use the Super Chargers too often because it fries the battery. Not sure if that's true or not
Interesting…
It will definitely degrade the battery much more quickly. If it is cold outside, it lessons that a bit. The higher charge levels create heat in the battery. To make a battery last longer, never go below 20% SOC and not over 90%.
The charging speed was just awful.
Agreed
Please stop using chargers beyond the capability of you car. Don't use 150 Kw when a 50 Kw is all you need.
Dude stop. Please stop. In 60 seconds my Suburban is full. Love you Airman but don't piss away money on this EV joke. Be good✌️
I’ve owned a Tesla for almost 5 years and can count on my hands how many times I’ve had to charge at a public/Tesla charger. All of my charging is done overnight while I sleep and so far I’ve saved close to $25,000 by not buying gas. I’m aware EV’s aren’t for everyone but for a lot of people they are incredible. Never going back!
Don't buy an ev if you don't want one, Jeff: problem solved. No one who wants/has an ev cares about your opinion.
@David Randall I'm guessing you don't want/care about the slave labor in the cobalt mines that are required to build these vehicles? Don't forget the majority of electricity still comes from burning coal and natural gas. Enjoy that virtue signaling bud.
@Jeff Blue -- Good thing drilling for and mining -- tar sands -- and refining oil is good the environment, and shipping it never causes problems :D. Ask Kansas how much they enjoy their latest pipeline burst.
Batteries are already 80% recyclable, and that percentage is going up.
Zero percent of electricity where I am is from coal or nuclear.
Enjoy staying a slave to the oil companies and their propaganda, Jeff.
@David Randall I'm from Kansas and a railroad engineer. The investigation hasn't concluded so who knows what happened to the pipeline. Biden denying the pipeline in the Dakotas was the greatest thing to happen to me. Oil trains as far as the eye can see have set me up for life. All that BS said, it's painfully clear that EVs are not the way forward. It's always been hydrogen. EV producer's know it, oil companies know it etc. Legislation needs to be passed so all EVs must use only wind and solar for charging. The Hague or UN should handle regulation on the cobalt slavery and destruction of entire ecosystems to get it. Hydrogen guy.
this is why you buy a comma 3 lol super cruise is a joke
I enjoy it… we won’t keep the car long enough to have to pay for super cruise. We are looking at the new ev equinox
